Fall 2013 Early Action

My FedEx arrived at roughly 2:00PM Eastern. For me, that’s when the normal mail comes anyway.

Congraturations Motame and people who are admitted to Columbia GS.

I just have two questions about the admission decision.

Do admission officers focus on recent institution grades, not high school?

If a person who submit the application, does it takes between 6-8 weeks no matter
I submit my transcript a bit late?

Just wanted to share with those applicants who feel that their “not-perfect” college GPA might affect their chances of being accepted or SAT scores, or other grade-like stats: My cumulative GPA is 3.67, not counting the grades that I earned at the first school I attended 6 years ago in a foreign country, which were mostly Bs. My SAT is slightly above 1800, and I made it in. It’s your story that also counts! Don’t forget about it! Best of luck!!!

Guys!! I GOT IN!!! Omg I’m crying right now. I went outside, and the package was right in front of my door, FedEd Standard Overnight. I’m in shock still.
I was dying from the stress of waiting, but be patient guys. There are a lot more acceptances to come, so don’t lose hope!
Wow I can’t believe I’m actually accepted, though. This thread has been a huge comfort to me along the way, so thanks for all the support, too, everyone.

Wow, congrats all ! who else waiting for FEDEX ? honestly I am waiting for reject letter. My GPA is very low and even though I didn’t send them original copy of my university transcript I didn’t call them or i have never been keep in touch with them.

By the way, I was in GS columbia campus today. Actually almost everyday I am passing by Columbia University campus because my work place is very close by. Today I visited the Lewisohn Building on campus which is GS building. It is very small building if you compare with other departments. It has very small study area, today noontime it was full of students, they seems having a fun times, joking around each other while some studying seriously. Age rank is mostly between 26 and 30ish but I saw an almost like 60 yrs old man who was studying in study room. And also 50’ish lady was having lunch with her schoolmate. It seems a little bit GS students separated from Columbia College students on campus but it is natural because of age and private life differences I believe most of the GS students have family or they have professional business life. Anyway, it was good to be in GS, great campus.

misshotan - speaking as a 25 year old I can say it’s probably better that way. I doubt, even in my 20’s, that I have a lot in common with most 17-18 year olds starting out at a 4 year school. In fact, at my community college I found some of their habits in and outside of the class unbearable. Now, that said, I’m sure the crowd at Columbia is probably a lot different. Regardless, I know who I am as an individual, based on my experience in life so far, and I’m not here to pledge a frat or master the art of beer pong (been there, done that).

I expect to meet other like-minded individuals looking to better themselves at a traditional university. In terms of a typical college freshman experience, well… that boat has sailed. I’m alright with that and will be more than happy to spend my time pursuing a rigorous academic agenda with other GS students.

I wish you the best of luck as you await a decision from the admissions committee.

GS students are ubiquitous on campus. They’re everywhere. They’re in clubs, in frats and sororities - sometimes in leadership positions in those respective clubs/frats/sororities, and they’re on athletic teams - crew, baseball, volleyball, etc.

Nobody really hangs out in Lewisohn, as it’s ostensibly an administrative building. I’m graduating in May, and have probably been in the lounge 10 times over a number of years. The main student lounge is in Lerner. At GS, you’re only as segregated as you choose to be. I’m in frat, I have a girlfriend who attends Barnard, and I’ve played intramural sports. I also have a friend (GS) who’s on the heavyweight rowing team.

Some older GS students choose not to partake in school activities, but many younger students are fully immersed into the campus culture/zeitgeist. It’s really up to the individual on what she/he wants out of this experience.

I am sure FRIDAY is another day lots of you guys admit to Columbia GS.

At the same time, I have a question about annual GS financial aid.
Last month, I watched a video on facebook that admission committes interviewed about
Columbia financial aid. One of admission committes said that school will cover much tuition for students whose family income is below 25k(or 30k).It almost sounds like going to Columbia for free if my family earns low income. Well… to be honest, I applied for GS as a regular decision applicant so that I am pretty not sure my admission decision will be. However, I calculated annual expenses( both tuition and undirect expenses) on GS website, and I have over $46000 if I stay up to 3 years. I am sure that each applicant earns totally different amount of income, but I wish to know their generous financial aid system.

Thanks

I’m definitely looking for the college experience ( - the beer pong), and I too think its up to the individual. Joining clubs and taking on student leadership positions is part of the education package as far as I’m concerned and I seriously hope that there is no “GS stigma.” Even if there were it wouldn’t matter, I want to experience everything Columbia has to offer and so I will!

I guess if that’s what you want there’s nothing wrong with it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I don’t want to be involved on my campus. Even at the cc I attended events sponsored by different clubs or organizations and a lot of them were fun. I just don’t have any delusions about the fact that I’m 25 and, even if they don’t notice, I will. I’m not saying it won’t be fun, but I doubt my experience will be the same whether I want it to or not. The difference is that at this point in my life I’m comfortable with that. Maybe two or three years ago before the Marine Corps. I would have been looking for something like that going back to school.

Natdcny - a friend of mine recently graduated and said that on campus there’s virtually no distinction to be made. Off campus, when it comes to dealing with alumni recruiters in certain industries, you might find some preference for Columbia College kids. I think if you wanna go out and play some pong you should be fine. Although I’m sure it’ll take a little more effort since no one at GS is going to be down the hall from other students dorms where I imagine a lot of friendships are formed (for traditional, younger students). I could be wrong.

I said - ( minus ) beer pong! Lol

I’m 31 and very active on my campus. Most of the “kids” don’t even know how old Iam, not that it’s a secret, but I also don’t run around screaming my age. Obviously I’m looking for a more serious academic atmosphere otherwise I wouldn’t be going to Columbia, but I would like to join a club ( books, poetry, art, music ), why not have some fun while receiving one of the finest educations the world has to offer?!

Question to the admitted people: On the fin. aid website under “documents,” does it say GS scholarship application? I submitted it back in February, but I can’t find a record of GS receiving it anywhere. Also, has anyone received any word from financial aid?

I’m so glad acceptance letters keep going out, and very much looking forward to meeting you all at orientation on August 26! I’m also planning on attending the APS on May 28, is anyone going to that one?

Hopefully we (the people on this thread) will be able to connect at school, and share our dreadful waiting experiences, haha.

Doesn’t seem like many are using Storybook, but if you do, feel free to contact/add me! My name is Max Rangel.

Ok Max just friended you!
