FALL 2016 UCLA OFFICIAL TRANSFER THREAD

@unknown10108 I don’t know if you can head to a UCLA Transfer Night session, but I went last week and it was SUPER helpful! The Undergraduate Admissions officers headed the meeting and even read/gave feedback on personal statements. I am so insanely glad I went! If you can’t go, I would definitely contact Undergraduate Admissions and see if you can get some assistance.

I just read that UCLA has a maximum unit cap policy for transfer students. Does that apply to high-unit majors like engineering? I think it’s pretty common for engineering majors to have 100+ units since it takes 3 years in average to transfer. By the end of spring, I will have around 133 quarter units. Does that mean I’m rejected right away?

@cyan96 You won’t be rejected for having too many credits, but you won’t be able to transfer all of them over, most likely.

@incogneato I certainly hope so. I just saw this page http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/uc-transfer-maximum-limitation-policy-chart.pdf and I’m starting to freak out about getting rejected.

@cyan96, all CC courses are lower division courses. If you attended a 4 yr and took upper division courses, you might be close or over limit.

Hey! I am a second year at Santa Barbara City College. I am applying to UCLA as a Sociology major. I have a 3.64, but plan on getting all As this semester which will bump me over to around 3.74. I have a 4.0 for my Major Prereq GPA. I’m in Honors Society Phi Theta Kappa and I’m also in the honors program which has TAP with UCLA. I also will have an Associate Degree for Transfer in Sociology and an AA in social sciences by the end of spring as well as completion of IGETC. I finished all the prerequisites for sociology and will have 3 more sociology classes other than what is required for prereq. I have various ECs and am involved in clubs and have a job. Since I have TAP with UCLA, my second major choice at UCLA is Gender Studies. I will be taking three gender related in the spring 2016, as well as another Soc class.
What are my odds? I love UCLA & I want to be a Bruin!

Hey there! Another communication folks stressing over the application especially the personal statement. How important are ECs and personal statement for this major before I know communication is the only department that hand pick their transfer students. Anyways here are my stats

School: A Seattle Communication (Freshmen) A California Community College (Sophomore)
Major: Communication
Overall GPA: 4.0 (That’s the only thing I’m not insecure about lol)
Pre-req: 5/7 when applying
Units when applying: 70 quarter units

ECs (Most impressive ones are in high school… do they really care about high school EC?)

  • President of ORBIS club (HS)
-Vice President of English society (HS)
    -Debate Team (HS)
-Communicate Committee of my church (HS)
-President of my church’s summer camp (HS)
    -Fish Club (College)
-Student Government activity board agent (College)

Volunteers: Average, not too outstanding but did quite a number of them
Awards: Couple awards in badminton (HS), AT Diploma in Flute, Scholarship from my college

Um what else…
I’m international students from Hong Kong and I’m nervous lol

So what’s my chance? And any tips or “inside secret” you know about the admission process? LOL Thanks guys

Chance me?

I’m applying to UCLA, Berkeley, SD, and SB.

This is my first year as a CC student, but I’m completing all 60 units this year (came in with 30 from APs).

Will the UCs see my grades from this semester when making their decision? I have above a 100% in three of my five classes—a really safe 4.0.

My IGETC will be completed with my Spanish class next semester.

Personal Statements: slightly above average 6/10 (might be a little modest with this assessment. I’ve heard various reactions. Some people absolutely loved it, some stressed improvement. I’m unsure where it stands).

Thanks so much for the chancing, buddies!

Yes, they will see the fall grades. Have you submitted yet? If not, I would perhaps try to improve the PS, as it will probably have a bigger impact, as you have fewer classes.

I haven’t submitted!

And great point. Ugh. It’s a little contentious, maybe. That’s about it.

Would anyone be down to read my PS #2 personal quality?

Hi guys! I just submitted my transfer app to UCLA. The only thing I’m a bit nervous about is my major prereqs. I recently changed my major. I’ve spent the past 3 semesters on pre-med track, so most of my courses are science and math. I decided pre med wasn’t for me, and I’m going pre-law, majoring in English. I’ll only have about 5 English courses under my belt. Anyone in a similar situation/have any advice?

@brookecandy which prereqs are you missing?

@Happy2Help I’m just missing the “one year of survey” requirement. My college has a prereq class we have to take prior to the British lit courses that I’m not taking until next semester (I’m in all premed courses right now). And as far as the foreign language, I tested out of the requirement at my current college so I’m not sure how that works.

@brookecandy The more prereqs you’ve completed, the better. For the English major, you need to take college level courses of foreign language to meet UCLA’s English major prereqs not your current college’s requirement that you tested out of. Are you still at Fordham? If so, you’ll need to speak to a UCLA English advisor about how to determine articulated courses.

I am a student from UCSD, and I want to transfer to UCLA 2016 of math major. I have 3.85 gpa and all predatory courses done. But I can not finish my GE before transfer. Will it hurt me?

Hi everyone! I’m really hoping to get into UCLA since my sister goes there and my family really wants me to go as well, meaning there is quite a bit of pressure for me to actually get in… My stats aren’t that impressive but I’m hoping for the best!

Major: History
GPA: 3.45
Major GPA: I think 3.8.
Pre-Reqs: All by spring except one…which my school offers but never seems to have as an actual class each semester…
IGETC: Yes after this fall.
TAP: I should have but no.
Personal Statement: Not done yet… but shouldn’t be too bad.
ECs: HS: color guard, technical theatre, and rotary. Now: volunteering at an elementary school.
Jobs: Manager as a pizza place and a writing tutor at my college(all together is 45+ hours a week).
Awards: A few awards for technical theatre and color guard in high school as well as a writing award. President’s list in college.
Applying to: UCLA, UCSB, USD, CSUF, CPP, CSUN.

I’m submitting my app in the next couple days after I finish my personal statements.

@kakarikos I think you have a good shot - HOWEVER, I would add in the additional comments section under your coursework that your school hasn’t offered the last prerequisite to your major during any semester, even though it may be listed on assist.org.

@kakarikos I agree with @goldencub, definitely explain in the additional comments section. Make use of those the best you can! If you think you’d be asked about something that you didn’t talk about in your PS, definitely talk about it (albeit briefly) in the pertinent additional comments section. For what it’s worth, the UCLA Transfer Admission website notes that the average admitted GPA of admitted pre-History students is 3.62, but the average applied is 3.45. If you want to look for more statistics, this is a great place to go: https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof14_mjr.htm

@incogneato In the additional comments section would you say Dear UCLA Admissions blah blah blah? What if the staff from other UCs see it? wouldn’t they be turned off by it?

@Philosoup I wouldn’t address it to one school in particular. If it isn’t pertinent to the school’s requirements, they’ll ignore that part. I would make it as straightforward as possible while giving them the information they need. For example, “While ______ was a requirement, my school, unfortunately, did not offer this class and I couldn’t find a college within a reasonable distance to take the class at.” Something simple and straightforward. The other UCs know that you very well may be applying to other UCs and they won’t judge you for providing information relevant to any of the others.
