thanks adides. but to tell you the truth, all intl applicants (99% at least) deserve to get in. singling out one person is as unfair for other applicants as it is for the person in question (false sense of hope!). but it's comforting anyway hehehehe ;)

merc, what documents did you send in for your fin aid?

(although it may not matter to me much in a few days)

The ISFAA, and the latest (03/04) tax return (the "SARAL" form - just one page).
Tax return photocopy was signed by dad and the ISFAA by me, dad and mom.
I also sent a letter detailing an unusual circumstance.

I forgot to put in a postcard for moneyman! :(

Oh, i just found that place i was referring to:

Financial Aid notification.
mid-March, 2005
In mid-March, admitted students will receive in their admit pack information about the status of their financial aid application. Students whose financial aid application has been reviewed will receive their award letter at this time. Thereafter, as cases become complete and reviewed, Student Financial Services will mail financial aid award letters to students on a weekly basis.

For more information about financial aid, visit Student Financial Services.

Update:

For all Financial Aid Applicants, there will not be an award letter in the admit packet -- only a complete or incomplete letter.

For those of you with a complete letter, sit back, relax and wait. We plan on mailing our financial aid award letters no later than April 1 (although it may, hopefully, be earlier).

For those of you receiving an "incomplete" letter, please do what you can as soon as possible to complete your files. We want to award you, but can't without complete documentation. Don't delay (and rest on your well-deserved admissions laurels). Rather, take care of finishing your financial aid application. Questions on specifics welcome at the blog.

moneyman, I went to the US embassy to apply for a SSN but they told me it would take 8 months. They said however if I go to the US and apply there it will take only two weeks. Do I have to make a trip to the US to get it in time for MIT to give me financial aid?

Barkowitz, the Indian Financial year is April to March, and here is NO WAY my parents can get their 2004-05 tax returns before late May, at best. i've sent in the latest ones, 03-04.

And it seems as though when the guys from MIT admissions have finished changing the way college applications work, The MIT financial Aid Office is carrying on the baton. You guys are awesome

yeah shashank, if you missed it, I asked that question on daniel's blog. He said we can send the next tax return by may 1 if possible. and that If it will take later than that, we should get in touch with the finaid office directly.

i email my financial aid officer and told him the latest one is not available yet...he said they undertsand and they use 2003 as a guide until we can send them the 2004 one...
so it is all okay

But using it as a guide still means that the finaid letter will not be complete right?

this is wat he told me

"We understand that sometimes 2004 financial information isn't available until later in the year. In these cases we will use 2003 information to determine an estimated financial aid award. Once the 2004 information is available we'll revise the award accordingly.

Please don't worry about the 2004 information at this time, but as soon as it is available you can send it to us."

Amrik: As you are a US Citizen, we cannot award aid to you until you complete your FAFSA (I assume the Profile is already done). You must have an SSN in order to do the FAFSA so you are in a bit of a "Catch-22" situation. My advice, follow up with the SSN process to make sure that it gets done rapidly. I would look at the SSA's website (www.ssa.gov) to see if there are any better ways to get your number faster.

Shash_Rao: Keep us informed. In an earlier post, I mentioned that for international students, we follow your tax year through March 31st (see the post category "Posts for International Students" on the side of my blog). Since we know the Indian year for the Saral ends on March 31st, we would hope to have it from you by May 1. If it is going to be later, get in touch with your Financial Aid Officer.
