for highschool seniors who applied for 2011 fall admissions

I wouldn’t stress out too much guys - I have been stuck on Step 2 for a few weeks myself, but I’m sure we’ll all make it through! :P

MConklin, or anyone for this matter, what is the earliest date when regular decision applicants can expect their letters?

Renaissance Scholar nominees (~100 applicants) will be notified around March 1.

Everyone else will get letters on or before April 1.

In the past, acceptance letters have been sent out in waves, usually starting around March 15th. (And just because you don’t receive a letter in the first wave doesn’t mean you haven’t been accepted. IOW, acceptances will be sent out even in the final wave of mailings. And there is no rhyme or reason for which wave your notification comes in. First wave does not mean you’re a more highly desired applicant; last wave does not mean you were just barely accepted.)

Be patient! The admission counselors are working as hard as they can right now to get all the applications read and the hard decisions made.

BTW, this question has been asked and answered about a half dozen times already–see the top of this page for example…

If your account indicates that you are in committee review, your application may or may not have a decision. Because decisions may change until the moment they are sent, we have chosen not to indicate ‘decision made’ on your accounts until that time.

Students applying to special programs will hear a bit earlier, but our applicants should hear from us throughout the month of March.

Thank you very much! I really appreciate the quick responses.

I know that patience is essential during this waiting process, but it is still highly nervewracking! In the meanwhile, I wish the best of luck to all Rochester applicants :)

I’m sorry, could someone explain how the Renaissance Scholarship works? I found an application online but someone else was commenting on nominees. Will people be nominated first or do they apply? If the latter is the case, has the application date passed?

Also, since it seems like someone wanted to take a poll or something- my application is being reviewed by a senior second reader. I really like that the first reader’s name and contact info is given. I’ve met my regional admission counselor before, it seems more personal this way :)

dittodog1yr… The application that appears online is a self-nominating process. If you believe that you may be among our top applicants and should be considered for the Renaissance Scholarship, completing the application is well worth it.

That being said, my colleagues and I have the option to nominate any student for the Renaissance Scholarship as we review applications. If I read an application that I am particularly excited about, I can push them to the Renaissance Committee for further review, regardless of whether or not the Renaissance Application has been submitted. The Renaissance Committee, of which I am also a part, will take a few days to review all Renaissance nominations and will then select fewer than 80 of our entire applicant pool (over 13,400 this year) to invite to campus for a 2 day event.

There are a lot of factors we consider. First and foremost, Renaissance Scholars will be very strong students, and almost all will have what we call an ‘x-factor’ (i.e. impressive research, very unique experiences/interests, etc.)

mine is in stage 4 committee review

MConklin, Is there any negative or possible downfall to self-nominating for the Renaissance Scholarship? Could this hurt your chances of admission if not selected for the scholarship? I really love Rochester but would need a lot of financial help in order for attending to be possible. So if there’s even a possiblilty I would be selected, I think applying is smart idea. However, not if this could be seen as a negative to admissions. Also, are applications for the Renaissance Scholarship still being accepted at this time?

did anyone email or call your regional counselor? would it be a good idea to do that?

^ I emailed my regional counselor several weeks ago, but never received a reply. So I directed the message to the admission office instead.

I was slightly surprised that I didn’t get an answer, but I guess it’s understandable, what with all the applications they have to read at this time of year.

Hey… few questions to address.

collegekid4228… Self-nominating for Renaissance will not negatively impact your candidacy in any way. If you feel you are a strong candidate, it can only help, if only because it shows you continue to be interested in UR.

carmondd and scionn… I honestly would recommend that you call rather than e-mail. As a counselor I try to make it my priority to respond to e-mails within 24 hours, as we all do and should. However, there are weekends or a stretch of days when I will get literally hundreds of e-mails. To be honest, this can be disheartening, as many of the e-mails ask questions that can be answered in 1/3 the amount of time over the phone. E-mail is efficient and at times completely appropriate, but if you really want to leave a positive impression, I think making a phone call would be great. I hope that this information, which is only my opinion of course, helps.

Hi,

I applied EDII to U of R by January 1st, 2011. My application is currently on stage four (the committee’s decison) and I was wondering when I will get a decision responce. It says that MOST applicants will find out by March 31st (which is clearly directed towards regular decision appliants), but it does not specify a date that EDII applicants will be notified. I was assuming it would be sometime this month, but I’m not sure. Is there anyone else who has applied ED II and has received/has not received a notice?

Kind of waiting in agony here.

Cheers

tyr0newivy… I applied EDII way back in mid December and am still awaiting a reply from them. From my understanding, most EDII applicants will here back in about 3 or 4 weeks though.

For those that applied EDII and have not heard, please call the office and inquire. Most EDII applicants should have heard from us, and it may be that your applications are being held up for any number of reasons. I highly recommend calling.

MConklin… I applied EDII and called twice in the past two weeks. Whenever I am told I will be notified, I am not and I’ll call and they tell me that I will know in another week. I don’t want to feel like I am bugging the admissions counselor, but at this point, it’s been so long of a wait, it makes me wonder if I should have just stuck to Regular Decision… Any suggestions for me?

sslamp… I am sorry to hear that. I will follow up with you in a private message.

S is still in stage 4. He now has a couple of excellent options from other schools comparable to Rochester and even though Rochester is his number one choice at this point unless they can be in the ballpark financially with these other offers I can see him choosing another option. It really in the end is going to come down to the best offer for him-and he truly loves Rochester but it’s just such an expensive school and short of him being a Renaissance Scholar they won’t be able to touch these other offers. So I will hope he becomes one (pretty funny since he isn’t even accepted yet! )

It is too bad there wasn’t an Early Action option at UR.

In the first reader’s hand. Maybe I submitted my application too late.

Pepper03 - Congrats to your son on his acceptances/offers thus far. I certainly hope that things work out for him here as well, but it sounds as if he has some strong options, and that must be a comfort!

cliffordwu - If you are still in the first reader’s hands, it is not necessarily because you completed your application late. More likely it is that your first reader has a lot of files to get through and simply hasn’t had enough time to get through them all.
