Halflokum, I would LOVE to get confirmation of what you heard about Emerson. Do you think they would tell me if I called…? Or is that rude?

^^I can’t think of any reason why they wouldn’t tell you if they are saying it on the tour. I’d be curious to know if they’ve changed their admit number or if they couldn’t fill the seats. The latter would surprise me knowing some of the talent that they turned down.

I called and asked and spoke to a very helpful young man. He confirmed that there are only 14 students in this year’s freshman class. Last year’s class had 32. They put offers out to about 50. So, it sounds like they just had fewer people accept this year.

the group on FB for Emerson MT 2016 class does show only 14 members too… 13 girls and 1 boy!

These kinds of details were really helpful when my D was doing this audition circuit and become even more valuable if you can get a true estimate on how many students audition.

Just as an aside, that might be helpful to someone starting this process…i really couldn’t understand why these programs had to be SO small, prior to my daughter attending. I kept thinking, can’t they just add 10 more??

Now i realize that there is great truth in something Brent Wagner told parents at the University of Michigan audition day! He was talking about the limited funds they had in scholarship money (assuming he meant talent based). He elaborated by saying how much money it took to run these kinds of programs and how they were not “moneymakers” for the University as a whole…well, i finally get it! My daughter and the other 17 people in her class(not to mention the other 60+ kids in the program) have an unbelievable amount of scheduled one-on-one time with faculty: voice lessons for an hour and then coaching for an hour and some have private tap lessons and then there is the regular “update” meetings, etc…i don’t think Webster is alone in offering this kind of thing. They couldn’t have a lot more than 20 per class and make that happen…and then casting is a whole 'nother thing!

Anyway, i am amazed by the personal attention these kids in these kinds of programs receive!

^^I agree in essence but remember that a bigger program doesn’t necessarily mean less individualized attention. My kid went to a bigger MT program (NYU/Tisch) and the class sizes were still under 16 students and there were private lessons. They just have more faculty and also more productions.

I totally agree! The overall size of the program doesn’t make a difference. Its the student:faculty ratio that i imagine contributes a lot to the end result. NYU is one that has a unique system that seems to net great results!

adding Syracuse

FYI, not sure the NYU info is correct. I got the number by counting the number of email addresses on a group email so it isn’t an official number.

The number of both over and under enrollments this year is interesting. I wonder if it will mean changes for the admissions patterns for this year’s applicants. (Or maybe this happens every year but I didn’t notice it last year.)

I wonder if the discussion of the Emerson cut policy made a difference in enrollment. I know it came off of my D’s preliminary list because of that. 13 girls and 1 boy sounds very interesting for casting!

I wonder about this as well. Not directly related to MT admissions (which were held to 15 freshman), but I’m certainly curious whether last years’ unusually high yield for Northwestern Theatre has resulted in fewer folks being admitted to the NU class of 2016. Has anyone heard anything about that yet?
