@jdw123 do you think asking for early decision affected your decision in any way? i’m just worried that they’ll spend less time looking at my app if i rush them…
Has anyone heard from their counselor after asking for an early review? What has the response been like? What did they say? Can you call for a decision if desperate?
@Yankers I contacted mine Friday after close of business and they got back to me on Monday saying it was a likely denial. Accepted into W&M and waiting to hear back from GWU for the Elliott School. I have no hard feelings - just trying to get into the best school I can. I’m trying to do Diplomatic Security at State, not save the world in USAID or consulting in DC, but kudos to anyone that has those high aspirations.
@criesinchinese I do not think the early request means the committee spends less time looking at your app. If you request an earlier decision, it simply means that your file that would’ve otherwise been read during a later week of committee is moved earlier. If anything, within my email I included language indicating Georgetown is my top choice which might’ve helped a little, but then again, I am not an admissions officer so I have no way of knowing. I hope this helps!! Also, for everyone in general, I fully understand that Georgetown’s application process is incredibly stressful BUT, I also want to believe there’s a method to this madness. After all, there’s a reason that Charles Deacon, the dean of admissions when my MOM went to Georgetown is STILL around today. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE AND HOYA SAXA!!
@jdw123 thanks for the info!! Do u think they focus more on essays, stats, or ecs? Do u think u could take a look at my essays, if u have the time?
Let’s hope for some today!
but…if the deadline is may 15 and i’m asking them for an early read…that only gives them like 6 days for my app/3 days if only business days…maybe i shouldn’t ask for an early decision??? what do you guys think???
Hi! I am new to this thread but it has been very interesting to read and hear about everyone else’s transfer app experience. I found out a couple of weeks ago that I was accepted to the nursing program. Waiting to hear back from a couple of other programs at other schools but very excited by the opportunity at GU and thinking good thoughts for everyone else waiting to hear!
@criesinchinese I got that too the email asking me about spring 2019! They sent it to me twice the secondnd time i filled out the form
@krives22 I applied to the nursing program as well, but haven’t gotten a decision yet. When did you apply? and may I ask your stats? It would mean so much to me because I haven’t seen that many people on this forum that are nursing majors!!
Congratulations. Way to go!
To help others in the future.
What do you think were the things that you did differently this time around or did in the past few years that turned them around from an initial rejection (if you applied as a freshman-assumption because of your love of gtown/legacy) into a Hoya. Even if you didn’t apply in the past, what important tips do you have to share? Do you think your legacy status helped you as a transfer and did you write about it in your supplemental?
I’m not jdw, but I can help answer that question. I didn’t apply in high school because my grades were far below Georgetown level. I thought this would be a dealbreaker for the committee, but I think I got in for the following reasons:
-Focused ECs. Not all over the map. Almost all my extracurriculars were related to politics.
-Writing. I spent a ton of time on that essay and I mentioned profs by name. This is important because there are profs from the department you applied to on the committee.
-Interview. Never turn down the interview, immediately reach out to your rep, and PREPARE. I named clubs and buildings by name, and my interviewer could tell I was invested.
There’s no secret to getting in, but you could really help your chances by doing the aforementioned things.
@hkwonn hi! i think i submitted my app the day it was due on march 1st, though i worked on throughout february. to give a brief overview of my stats, my high school GPA was a 3.96, my ACT score was a 34, I took several AP classes and almost all of my extracurriculars had to do with volunteering, mostly in hospital settings. My college GPA is a 3.8 and since high school, i have gotten my nursing assistant certification and worked in both a nursing home and a hospital. hopefully that helps a little!
Hi @privatebanker, thanks for the great questions. I did not initially apply to Georgetown from high school as I was recruited as a student athlete at my current school and applied early decision. However, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities and lessons I had at my current school as they made me realize what my true academic passions are and that led me to apply to Georgetown earlier this year.
In the first essay response I did discuss how my mother’s Georgetown experience had a direct impact on my own life and affected the way I see the world. I am very proud of this essay because I believe it not only affirms my interest in Georgetown, but because it shows my love for both my mother and my family. Honestly, I just opened my Google Drive and read through this essay again and it actually brings tears to my eyes.
As for the school specific essay, I did exactly what @TerrierNation did and combed through as much information about my specific major of interest, as well as names of classes, professors, and programs. Although this essay was not quite as heart warming as the other, I think the two together were very effective as the first one shined a light on my values and my personality whereas the second one focused on my goals and ambitions.
I am hesitant to give any general advice because I am not an admissions officer but I think I got in because of these reasons:
-Two essays that showed my true personality as well as my goals and were tailored specifically for Georgetown and my program of interest.
-Great high school record
-Great record at my current school
-Meaningful involvement with a handful of extracurriculars
-*Legacy. Yes, I do have a parent who went to Georgetown but I do not know to what extent this helped. All I can say is that for my application, I used my mother’s legacy status as a cornerstone for a strong personal statement.
Thanks. That is super helpful. Best of luck!
Likely denial from SFS…my essays were not the strongest. Bu the decision is not official, do you guys think there’s anything i can do before they finalize decisions to change it??
@criesinchinese I’m not sure how much this would influence their decision, but if you have any strong updates to your resume that might help!
Any expectation to hear back today? It’s approaching 5
@criesinchinese Can you PM me or email me the contact you emailed for the early review? I emailed a contact 2 weeks ago and have yet to hear back.
Are people who applied to the college still waiting to hear???
