Georgia Tech Class of 2027 Official Thread

Any clue what the WL to accept rate is? Decisions have not been looking good so far.

I believe they took 41 last year off a waitlist of roughly 4900. I heard many of those were offered a place in first year summer abroad program. There are about 100 slots in that program.

Son got accepted CE. 5.29 GPA, ACT 34, a lot of extracurriculars. Out of State.

You do not need conditional offer. It is automatic. Call admissions they will confirm my words. We were in same boat and got very nervous and I investigated. But DD was accepted from waitlist (it was crazy 2020 Covid year), however I would not count on waitlist this year. Deposit somewhere about April 29th.

Could you please elaborate the “automatic” part ?
Does it mean everyone wait-listed is “automatically” offered conditional admission offer for next fall/summer, assuming they won’t get off the wait-list eventually ? Thanks.

Only a very small portion of students on the wait list are offered a conditional transfer path. These are very defined paths for admission for students who satisfy very defined categories, such as legacy, graduate of Atlanta Public Schools, etc. and even if you fall into one of the transfer paths outlined on their site you are not automatically offered a transfer pathway offer.

Thank - So if a wait-listed applicant is eligible - say legacy for Conditional pathway offer, a Pell Grant eligible for Talent Pathway offer, or graduating out of Atlanta Public Schools for APS pathway offer etc. - is 100% guaranteed a Transfer Pathway offer. Is that correct ? If yes, there’s still hope for some on the wait-list post closing of it.

The options seem really unclear to me. Is it possible to transfer to GT after freshman year? Or is it only after sophomore year? Does the Transfer Pathway only apply to certain groups. So if my student does not fill any of those categories, are they prevented from transferring to GT? Right now he is on the waitlist- so what are the possible outcomes? Denied when the waitlist closes, accepted off waitlist, or Transfer pathway?

It is everyone who applies and is not accepted (and indicates on his/ her initial application than has parent, grandparent or sibling as alumni) is automatically eligible for this path. You do not need a special invitation. This is for Legacy path only. I did not investigate anything else.

Ok. If you student is not in any category he can still try to transfer, but the above categories may fill all or almost all available spots.

His options are accepted or denied.

No, they are not guaranteed a pathway offer at all. It’s just possible they can get one. And if given one they have to follow all of the requirements of the pathway which are outlined. They also have to apply to the major allowed by the pathway. Only a small portion of the people who are currently waitlisted will qualify.

Yes, he can absolutely transfer as a normal transfer student if he does not fall into any of the transfer pathway groups. The transfer pathway just gives a secure offer of admission for a specific term for those who satisfy the pathway requirements (3.3 GPA (overall and math/science), 30 hours post high school graduation either completed or in progress, and required courses for major either completed or in progress at time of application). If you apply as a normal transfer student, you will have a holistic evaluation and not guaranteed admission.

This is actually not true. Many transfer students are admitted to Tech every year not on a transfer pathway. Most students offered a transfer pathway don’t use it. One of my kids was offered one and chose his classes thinking he might take advantage of it. One month into school he decided he was happy where he was. His roommate, also planning to transfer to Georgia Tech, came to the same decision. I think it’s a great thing to have in your back pocket but it’s very disruptive to transfer into a school after a year somewhere else, particularly if you are happy where you landed. It is, however, a great option for those who have Georgia Tech as their dream school and are willing to forgo a freshman year somewhere else to accomplish it.

GT seems coming up with more and more transfer paths every year. I did not say it is impossible to transfer without path but I said that any transfer not in special path is less guaranteed.

Transferring in with a special path is guaranteed if you meet all of the requirements. However, we know several kids who transferred in as fall admit sophomores with no special transfer path. Basically, you need to be out of high school a year to start as a transfer, and the more AP credits you have the better your application will look.

This is very common with Georgia students who go to Georgia State, or Kennesaw State for freshman year, apply for transfer after one semester for the following fall.

According to this GT website the regular competitive transfers require applicants to be out of high school before the GT transfer application opens for the term they want to transfer in. Meaning, those who are denied for Fall, can try transferring in Spring by filling application starting Aug 1st. And, if they have completed the courses ( with AP scores and Dual Enrollments) for their choice of major then they can still get into GT for Spring term. No need to wait for a whole year after HS graduation or to complete 30-credits post HS. Rules appear to be quite different between the regular competitive xfers and the pathway xfers.

That may be theoretically true, but I don’t know anyone who has successfully done that. I think GT wants to see college grades for the best chance. Transfer admit rate is not high (70 plus percent are denied without a pathway) but you can apply for transfer multiple times. I certainly would not count on admission next spring.
