Guys do any of you know what are the three types of deferral letters, what are some of the key things that the letter contains? And what they are from best to wors?

ladygaga19

was your letter signed by some theodore guy?

Yep! Well, at least mine was.

I got the “good” deferral letter a week ago for the engineering school i think because of my low gpa (3.32) and then today got notified of my acceptance, so its definitely possible.

CollegeIsFun2010: by mail or email for your acceptance?

email and i checked it and it was on WA

yes, my letter was signed by the Theodore Spencer. For those who were deferred and accepted, did you send in any extra materials or was it pretty random? Also, did it just show up randomly throughout the day or was it at midnight?

Dear Kristin

After multiple individualized and comprehensive evaluations of your application to the University of Michigan College of Engineering for Fall 2010, we believe that you have something uniquely valuable to contribute to our campus. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, your application has been deferred for a final decision until a later date.

Your application will be re-evaluated, and a final decision will be made based on how your credentials and academic achievements contribute to the composition and quality of this year’s freshman applicant pool. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than mid-April, 2010.

Please refer to the website [Office of Undergraduate Admissions: FAQs about the Admissions Process for Deferred Students](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/deferred) for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next. Strong fall semester or second trimester grades may enhance your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward your fall semester or second trimester grades when they become available.

Be sure your U-M ID XXXXXXXX is on all materials submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

We hope your interest in Michigan continues, and you have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful senior year.

Sincerely,
Theodore L. Spencer
Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director

Is this a good or bad deferral letter ^^ … also what are they asking from me.

Kristen.91 - They’re not asking anything of you. They’re letting you know that they’ll be considering you with the regular pool. While this may seem disapointing to you, it means you’re very much still in the running. However, it also means that there was no single compelling reason to TIP in your favor for immediate admission either.
While it’s tough to wait there is little you can do. Do not stalk them. HOWEVER if you have an outstanding semester, doesn’t hurt to let them know in a short note. By outstanding, I mean straight As. OR if you win some kind of regional award or honor, a quick note to let them know about it and remind them U MIch is your #1 pick. OR an outstanding letter of recommendation – but just one, not 10. They are busy people – don’t make them overwork unless it could REALLY tip things in your favor, or the extra contact could work against you.
Ask yourself what is DIFFERENT about you/your application than all the other students they review with similar statistics. Is there a unique contribution you can make? Was there a possible weakness in some aspect of your application, such as your recommendation? Then consider very carefully chosing to update them if you feel you can somehow distinguish yourself from the crowd – especially if it involves supporting diversity and social justice, or if you’ve overcome some extraordinary obstacle to achieve what you have.
Best wishes. Breath deep and relax, knowing there is still a good chance you can get it without updating any info as well!

You seem to have a “good” deferral letter but it pertains to the college of Engineering rather than LSA…it’s worded very similar to te LSA “good” deferral letter. So I believe you have a good chance of getting in just as kmccrindle posted above (BTW a very nice post, made me feel much better of my deferral lol)

kmccrindle-so u would not suggest sending in 7th semester grades if they were only so-so or pretty much the same as how your grades have been throughout high school? [i got the same letter as kristin, but for lsa]. also, would u suggest sending in an updated resume, or something of that sort?

I got straight A’s so I will definitely be sending in my grades lol…in addition I joined up with a few friends from around the country and have been attempting to raise money to help improve worldwide education, it sounds stupid but we already have two school socials set up with around 3000 people attending each, ($7 at the door! - expenses)…so I think I’m gonna include a note about it

got a bad deferral letter… ■■■…

collegeisfun2010-

did you send anything in? or did they just send you an acceptance randomly?

CC and others in CC’s situation - FYI, this is just a guess, okay, but IF they ask you for 7th, SEND no matter what – they need em to finish the evaluation. If they DO NOT ASK but your grades a) confirm an upward trend; b) confirm a strong GPA in U M’s mid to upper range overall or b) demonstrate increased rigor (eg., more APs than jr. year, equally strong marks) then I don’t think it can HURT you to send.

Let me illustrate. If you are like my son, who had a lower GPA in Gr. 10, but then had a 3.92 for junior year, it would really help them to see that the 3.9 trend continued into senior year. Had he had a 3.3 trend in senior year, then they’d identify that the improvement junior year was a fluke (it wasn’t, this is just and example – he had all As sr. year – and b/c he’s on trimester, he send them the As even though he wasn’t deferred…as evidence he was serious about keeping his GPA higher…which he did. I will note that he was accepted shortly after he sent that supplemental letter, but there were other factors connected to the timing, such as confirming his residency).
So, if they’d been thinking “Hmmmm, 3.6 average at a strong school, strong reccs, strong ACT…but can he really do the work” the 7th semester marks would have helped them feel comfortable that “Yup, he can do the work here…the reccs or his explanation about those gr. 10 marks appear to be true…” Likewise, a downward trend in someone who struggled earlier is not going to HELP your application.

So, think about those kinds of things when you are deciding what, if anything, you do.

CC’s Second Question re: Updated Resume – They may not exactly remember your first resume. So instead, a short letter: Eg. "I realize you are still determing my fit with U of M and wanted to share with you great news about this recent accomplishment…I hope this helps you distinguish the kind of contribution I can, if selected, make to the U of M Community…
Something like that. Make sense?

And good luck to you all.
Have a very merry Christmas and remember that the universe is perfect!
Cheers,
K

^ great post!, I am actually in the exact situation described in your 7th semester story, weak sophomore and strong junior year (straight A’s this year)

bump !

Hey everybody,
I have gotten absolutely no information from U Michigan whatsoever regarding my decision. I only talked to someone on the Chat thing and they said my stuff was mailed on the 15th. I live in Pakistan, have a 3.0, but a couple of really good hooks involving community service and film. Now I have nothing on WA, don’t know where it’s suppose to say view decision or 7th semester, but all I have is to see application status, I-D20 something, the financial aid stuff (which I didn’t apply for) and the help links and stuff. I’ve asked a couple of times on other forums and people say I’ve been deferred but without the 7th semester link it’s the good deferral. Can anyone confirm this? because I find it extremely hard to believe they wouldn’t ask for my 7th semester gpa with my Cumulative being so low…
and also can anyone tell me where exactly the semester link or view decision link show up on the WA? thanks!

^ They’re probably just taking a little longer to process an international app (just speculating though)

I received the “good” deferral and haven’t had the “7th semester grades - notified” thing pop up on my WA as of yet…so so far so good on that aspect of your question

If you’re accepted, the “View Decision” link shows up right next to the “View Credentials” link…the “7th semester grades - notified” will show up within the “View Credentials” link under all the required application materials at the bottom of that specific page.
