GoOakland, they typically don’t automatically rescind but usually ask you to submit a letter explaining the situation and then make a determination. However, given how comparatively tough some say Calc is at U of M and considering that you are headed for engineering, it could really send up a red flag. So I’m not sure how you’ll explain a D in it – is it an AP Calc at least? Was there some super-extenuating circumstance?

anothonyxy21 I’m definitely not worried about it, I still need to get accepted (got the “good” deferral letter…straight A’s 7th semester so I think I might get in

has anyone on here gotten accepted/rejected yet?

LadyGahga: Yes. Someone in the “Decisions” thread got in after being deferred. The person was OOS and had a 3.7 W, 3.5 UW and 2130 SAT.

I think I have the Good deferral letter. Signed by Theodore L. Spencer!
But just wondering, do A- count as As?
because for the 7th semester, I have the following:
AD Latin 4: A-
AD Modern European History: A-
A Calculus AB: A-
A Physics: A-
AD English: B+
Independent Study Macroeconomics: A
A Band: A

So yeah, basically all my “real” classes are A- and 1 B+…
but this is definetly an upward trend. For my 1st Quarter, Four of my classes were B+, so I really strained to pull them up. I really hope they count A- as As :(…

so, when are the rest of us supposed to be hearing back? i got one of the good deferral letters, but my 7th semester grades are only so-so :|

Best Letter - says that you’re being specially considered

Good Letter - asks specifically for 7th sem. grades

Bad Letter - mentions specificall the word “deferral”

do i have this right?

^^ I have the “good” deferral letter and I believe it specifically says the word “deferred” I can’t confirm this though because I’m not looking at my letter right now

^^i have the ‘good’ one, too. i remember it says something about having a unique attribute, & they need to see if there’s enough space in the class, or something. i don’t think it specifically says the word ‘deferred’, though.

I’m pretty sure I got the “best” one but it does say my application is being deferred for further review.

Thank you for your application to the U of M college of LSA. we are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your acheivements. however, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. as a result, we are writing to inform you that your app. is currently being deferred for further review.

while this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, it is still good news. your app. is one of a group that remains under consideration. all final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than mid-april 2010.

because you are in this select group, we hope your interest in Michigan continues, and we will keep you informed of our progress.

The parts I posted are the ones that talk about being in the “specific” group. My letter also suggests that strong first semester grades will help if you choose to send them in.

that’s the best one^

See my thread that I started yesterday - admitted with ‘bad’ deferral letter.

^ ya…we have seen it. of course people are going to be accepted who have gotten the bad deferral letter…not a surprise. I just don’t see what you’re getting at. Great job for your daughter/son I guess?

I got the letter that asks for my 7th semester grade.
I am really really disappointed since my stats are above the average.
Don’t know if calling the office will tell me why I am deferred…

Tifamo: While grades and SAT’s/ACT’s are huge, it’s obviously not everything they’re looking for. If that was the case, they’d just take everyone who has the best figures. Big schools like Michigan like to class build.

don’t lose hope tifamo!

Thank you ckl22. I understand that figures aren’t the only things that matter, but I am still depressed seeing so many people got in with SAT scores around 2100. Plus I think I am a pretty well-rounded person.
I will definitely call the office tomorrow to see where is wrong.

And thank you, LolyGAGHa!

Just double-checked my letter found that it doesn’t ask for my 7th semester grades.

“After multiple individualized & comprehensive evaluations of your application, we believe you have something uniquely valuable to contribute to our campus…however, due to our high application volume…your application has been deferred”

I guess I got the bad one?

^that’s the one i got. it’s the ‘middle’ or ‘good’ one.
