Harvard Wait list

I'd rather receive my rejection from Harvard now. 99% of me is totally pumped for where I'm going in the fall (yay us, redsnake!) but 1% of me is still thinking about waitlists (well, just one waitlist, now that Stanford's done). I just want this to be over ASAP so that 1% won't exist anymore.

I concur with MC that I'd love to know now. The waiting will all be over for most of us by next week.

For better or for worse...
(Stanford was already worse heh)

My admissions officer tells me that as of now they have almost 1630 deposits.

Prior to the Class of 2010, the size of Harvard’s freshman classes had wavered around 1640. But the Class of 2010 had 1684 students, and administrators hope to have about 1675 students enter the Class of 2011 in September, including newly admitted students and students on leave.

Harvard doesn't require deposits

Mmm, I wonder if that 1630 includes "students on leave." If not, we're probably screwed, but if so then that actually means Harvard'll take more people off the waitlist than last year (12).

When I called today, the person said that they would not have a definite number for at least a week.

You can trust the info I posted. If you really care, PM me and I can tell you the exact source details.

Not that I've gotten a call, but if you do receive one, do you have to commit to attending the school on the spot? Or do they give you some time to figure out what you want to do?

justkeepswimming, you have some time to decide (in my experience, at least). I got off the waitlist for Williams this past weekend, and while the guy took the approach of assuming that I was going when I said I was still interested in Williams, he said I had around five days or so to get my deposit out once I received my packet.

Are you all on very friendly, name-recognizing terms with your area admissions officers? Because many of you cite your regional reps for information here, and although I have sent letters, I've yet to have any kind of one-to-one conversations or even a reply... am I at a disadvantage?

The counselor at my high school just happens to be acquainted with the regional representatives...obviously you're not at a disadvantage, because you're on the waitlist with me :)

Thanks, sphairistic!

No, junioninhs,
I've sent a letter, an e-mail, left messages on her voicemail but received no reply.
My counselor has no contacts with adcoms at top universities.

oh ok, thanks for clarifying :-) hehe, I was really scared for a moment there that they were just completely ignoring me.

...oh yeah, and thanks for sharing the information too!

My nephew is waitlisted at Harvard and got a call yesteday (Tuesday) from Harvard alum (a university professor) he interviewed with in his home state. She said she had just returned from Harvard where she was told they would take "approximately 30" off the waitlist. He was suppose to call her back immediately and let her know if he had committed to another school (which he has). She pleaded with him in the phone message to "stay uncommitted" just a little bit longer! I know absolutely nothing about Harvard, just relaying the information my sister told me yesterday!

How can one stay uncommitted to another school and not risk loosing a place all together somewhere if Harward does not call one from the waitlist?

^
One can't. Schools understand about wait lists at other schools.

b4nnd20

from Harvard web site

"May 1 (all applicants)

National Common Reply Date for students admitted Early Action and Regular Action. No deposit required."

...so I kind of doubt Harvard has almost 1630 deposits.

...and I kind of doubt that my regional admissions officer is lying. But I don't mean to get snappy. I see your point. I am just posting what I have been told.

does anyone know how they actualy decide who gets off the waitlist...i heard somewhere it was based on your location (geography) and things like that..because in that case i have no chance...we sent 4 to harvard this year...
