Has anyone heard about selling blood for a little extra money

My psychology teacher said that in college he would sell plasma every two weeks and he would get 100 bucks every time. Is this true?

Yes, people do this.

I don't know if it is true your psych teacher did it. But yes it is possible to sell Plasma.

Yes, students do this even now. In my experience as a recent college prof, the students who do this tend to be very low income -- the kind of students whom some people on CC erroneously think automatically get lots of financial aid. In reality, with the exception of places like HPYS -- that are extremely generous, but also are where few people -- and even fewer low income people -- have the background to gain admission -- low income students usually are desperate for money for college, and often even are helping support their parents and siblings with their earnings.

I've heard a few commercials for it, seen a few posters around college, and drove past a few clinics. I may not be correct, but I don't think you get paid (might not be as much, if you do at all) the first time because they have to test everything. As far as how often, "...you can donate plasma up to twice a week. Current FDA Regulations state that the maximum frequency of donation is once in two days, and no more than two times in a seven day period." You might look at This is the place I've heard of here and it looks like they are all over the place, so you might check it for more info.

true. i know a few people who have done this at biolife. $100 bucks though? i think its more like $20 each time maybe.

i don't know why, but something about this thread made me LOL (literally) for like 10 minutes..just something about college students going as far as selling their own blood for some extra cash is hilarious to me

hmm.. Is it bad for your health?

not unless you take too much blood out of your body..your body is constantly producing new blood cells so taking out a little is fine

".just something about college students going as far as selling their own blood for some extra cash is hilarious to me"

? Sounds sad that some students are so desperate for money that they have to sell their blood. I don't see anything funny about it. Some students are selling their blood to help pay for their education. Some students are getting $200 weekly allowances from their parents. Yet, some middle class nitwits think that poor students have it made in college.

At least they aren't selling other things........

What's so weird about this?

There are plenty of students who also participate in all sorts of random psych experiments/projects for money as well.
I know my psych teacher from high school even did a sleep study once for a little bit of cash.

you can apply to be a sperm donor if you don't have moral issues with "spreading your seed". it pays well

You get 20 bucks for blood and about 50 for plasma- but donating plasma is horrible.
Donating blood is - well, you feel dizzy, but plasma is terrifying, it feels like ice is running through your veins, cos they put some calcium-infusion back into your body. You can't stop shaking for some time and I have fainted once or twice.

Poverty isn't LOL, btw.. It takes away a lot of enjoyment if you have to worry about money all the time, and it really hurts sometimes to have to slave away at McDonalds, where your classmates just order food without having to think about money..

Blood donating a very reliable source for money, and not bad for your health at all, you even lose weight (which is good, considering that cheap food isn't healthy at all). Getting all those health tests everytime is quite reassuring, too. Plus: There is always free food and it's amazing - homemade cookies and sandwiches and..! :-)

And: I don't have money to donate. But every two seconds somebody has an accidents and needs blood.

Yeah, people do it. My BF's best friend does it...he also signs up for those like, medical/psychological tests where they give you money to do something.

Our school has annual blood drives for donating blood, as in for free. I've donated, I had no idea you could get paid for it though haha.

The more I hear about it, the more I'm liking the sound of it. Its not only for very poor people; its also for people that are extremely lazy and want pocket change hahaha.

Selling sperm is also a very good option, or so I've heard....

^ now that seems like a less excruciating option...

i participated in some psychological experiment for some grad's research. obviously i faked my credentials.
