I'm just wondering whether this is a common practice on CC. I'm really on the fence about chem next year.

i'm a junior now, and next year i'll probably decide not to take ap art history. the thing is, i'll still have 12 AP's by the time i graduate, so it shouldn't even matter. i've challenged myself in many other ways.

ap chem is insane. just for your information

i've taken all the ap's i could, but chem and latin were the ones i was debating between

I'll preface this with my suggestion that challenging yourself academically always looks good on your transcript but, way more importantly, it will make you more mature and responsible and ready for college. If you think you can handle AP chem, take it. You know your abilities better than someone on this board.

On the other hand, CC is the type of place that makes someone feel like a slacker if they're not getting straight A's in AP everything. Most people at my high school don't take any AP science. AP chem is a class of about 5 kids, and two or three have said they intend to be neurosurgeons.

Lots of bright kids go through high school never taking AP classes and they do turn into happy, financially sound adults. Try not to worry so much.

Oh, and for me, I'm not taking any AP classes this year.

Personally I've taken 5 AP classes now, and AP Chem was by far my favorite.

IMO it's not that much work at all, you just need to be good with abstract concepts and cant expect to you study yourself an A. Basically it's just remembering a lot of rules and applying them to various questions, if you're interested in it it's really interesting.

The hardest thing imo was predicting the reaction formulas, and that was only because pretty much every rule you have could be broken in "exceptions".

In conclusion I think it's a great and very interesting class to be taking if you ARE in fact interested in Chemistry. It's not cut-and-dry at all and it will be frustrating at times because of it, but I loved that class more than all of my other APs. (Gov't, Bio, Stat, Calc)

my school only offers 12 ap's, and only 1 or 2 people from each class have taken all of them, it's next to impossible to fit it into one's schedule. So what if I'm taking only 2 AP's this year, so are the top students in my class as well

What my senior schedule was going to be: AP Chem, AP Econ, AP Psych, AP Calculus, English IV(decided not to take AP in my Junior year), and Environmental Science

What my senior schedule is: AP Econ, AP Psych, Environmental Science, Broadcasting I, Statistics, English IV

Ranks in the top 3 of the best decisions I've ever made.

Karido, maybe this is a self-fulfilling statement, but I'm not interested in chemistry past element etymologies and I don't think I'd be able to do well with "not much studying" (or with studying, for that matter). I notice that most of your AP courses are math/science oriented; did you choose to abstain from the eng/hist. or was it not offered/available with your schedule? If I end up taking it I will definitely motivate myself by looking at all those "Why do chemistry?" articles and posts including yours but now the reality is I don't care.

My AP courseload next year (junior) will be very "lite", considering i don't have a nonacademic hook, without chem is the thing: just AP US and both latins semi-indepently. My school does not offer AP English but I've heard things about ~1/4 of honors classes taking the test. my dream schools are oxford and harvard; cornell, swarthmore, and uchicago are reaches, while match(reach?)ier ones are LACs: oberlin, st. john's, and safeties I guess wherever I can get a scholarship. board scores will probably be ok, considering mid-1300s score in 8th grade. do you think not taking AP chem (and passing on either AP calc/physics b senior year) will ruin any chances at the reach schools?

My son's school does not encourage, and, in fact, in most cases does not ALLOW students to take all APs. It is a tough academic prep school, and the dean said there are very few kids who can handle (or have the sincere interest in) APs across the board. They encourage you to do maybe 2- 3 tops-in a year. Someone who prefers English and history might take those AP and stick with honors or regular math/science. This type load is still considered rigorous curriculum by the school. They expect the kids to enjoy some outside reading, sports, other ECs as well as the classes.

i'd say go 4 ap Chemistry next year. you won't regret it. if u work hard, there's nothing u can lose.

this year (Junior) I'm only taking AP US History along with Gifted Chemistry, Gifted American Literature, General Algebra II (math is my weakpoint), and Spanish II...

next year (Senior) I plan on taking AP Biology, Human Anatomy, AP Language, Spanish III, General Trigonometry, and AP Economics

hopefully they don't **** up my schedule next year like they did this year...they put me in that Hell Hole aka Gifted Chemistry instead of Human Anatomy like i requested

ap chem was my hardest but my favorite as well. i decided not to take ap euro history, but it conflicted with ap calc anyway.

I've decided not to take AP Computer Science. If I took the course it would boost raise my class rank even more, but why take a course that you aren't even interested in? Lots of kids at my school take elective courses that will boost their GPA, but I prefer to choose elective courses that I would enjoy doing.

I certainly have, but I'm not the average CCer. I decided not to take AP Latin and AP English just because I wasn't interested in pursuing them at the AP level. I also couldn't take AP Stats and AP Physics because I didn't have enough time.

i decided not to go with history and english... i'll have stat calc bio chem physics b and c latin computerscience economics and psych by the time i graduate tho, what's 2 less?

I didn't take U.S. History AP and took Honors instead. Though I do wonder what it would have been like to stress about this AP test (as it seems a common thing all juniors on here do), I was happy with my experience in Honors. Since my teacher didn't have a big test to teach to, we did a lot of simulations (really fun to do in U.S. History, probably even funner in government) and cool projects. I learned and had a lot of fun, so in that respect I guess I'm glad for not having done AP.

I did however take AP Chemistry and let me tell you, it's the hardest class I ever took. The teacher did make up for it in the end by curving everybody's test scores like you wouldn't believe, but AP Chem material can be such a challenge. It isn't impossible, but definitely one of the harder APs in my opinion.

I say go for AP Chem if you think you'll go into a science major in college. But if you won't be AND you think it could have some detrimental effects to your GPA AND you're going to apply to a selective college, then probably doesn't hurt too much to skip it.

I didn't take AP Euro, but my history teacher convinced me to self-study for it. I got a 3, which shocked my AP friends.

Someone almost lost his eyesight in AP Chem last year. He was temporarily blinded by something that got in his eye during one of the labs. The teacher is still working at our school. uhh

I think the whole class bombed the chem AP because the teacher was horrible.

I didn't take AP US History. Everyone takes that class, but my courseload was pretty heavy. That year turned out to be VERY hard and I worked my ass off and got A's in everything. I don't know if I would have done so well if I had taken APUSH.

I don't know if this will affect admissions or not. Since I'm going to major in Bio, I think it's better that I focused on science/math AP's. I'll see what happens.

i didn't take english language AP because i'm taking 2 english classes this year and english is my worst subject so i figured i shouldn't make one of them AP and give myself the stress. considering the fact that i'm not going to a super selective university, it doesn't matter.

I decided last year that I wouldn't take APUSH this year because i already had AP Bio and AP Lit and it would be too much.
