Based on past posts, I think the College Scholar Award decisions will be communicated in the first and second weeks of February. Hopefully some decisions will be communicated earlier via email or phone. Please post here when you hear from the committe with as much detail as you are willing to share.

The award claims to be 1/2 to 2/3 tuition. Does anyone know what tuition costs? The fees quoted on the site are comprehensive. If, like other LACs, room and board is about $8K, that makes tuition about $36K. So the college scholar awards range from $18K to $24K. Does that seem correct?

Projected comprehensive fee for 2010-11 is $45,680. We are also figuring 8-9K for the room and board piece - was close to 8 the year my son graduated (2009). Dean’s Awards are up to 20,500 and a student is awarded the higher of either Coll Scholars and Dean’s if both are awarded. Good luck, waiting is hard!!

grinfixer, I also was trying to figure out tuition. Not much info on the website, but your figures are along the lines of what I was thinking.

We are anxiously waiting to hear S’s College Scholar results!

I think the comments above that the scholarship runs between $18k - $24k is correct. It can also be stacked with another non academic scholarship such as music, which runs between $2k - $8k. So I’m guessing that $31k total in combined scholarships is the max anyone could achieve.

…may not be much more than the max dean’s award. So are there other perks associated with it if the money is close?

Haven’t read specically of other perks; but do wonder if the 1/2-2/3 tutition award rises as tuition is bound to rise each year. Anyone aware of this possibility? Would, then, make CS worth more than Dean’s.

Does anyone know if you are notified either way? Or it is assumed that if you are not notified (I guess it’s by regular mail sometime soon), that you have not been chosen for this award? Thanks!

I e-mailed the Admissions Department, and they said will notify next week. They will notify either way.

According to my bill, the 2010-2011 Tuition is 34,950, R/B 8,950 (total 43,900). There’s also a fee for health insurance, but that’s waived if your child’s covered under your policy. I also got an unexpected fee for “room repair” of $0.16 (yes, that’s 16 CENTS), but that was it for the bill. Good luck.

D is a junior. Does anyone have any info on what SAT scores coincide with what merit awards? Just got her Jan SAT scores back and they were a little lower than we thought they would be. She will retake in the spring, but trying to see if Woo would be affordable to us, since we won’t get much if any needs based aid.

that’s a good question, you might start a new thread, people might share cum SAT and amt of dean’s award.

Goodness, are these ever going to arrive! So impatient. But we just want to know, either way.

My son was contacted today by his admissions officer congratulating him on being a Wooster College Scholar. He didn’t think to ask the amount of the scholarship. He was told, however, that the letters went out today. Best of luck everyone!

Daughter waiting on word on Scholar Award…nothing as of today. Anyone else get word? Wonder if telephone calls are normal or not. Not really worried…just wondering. So used to a mix of waiting and wondering…and trying to imagine how we are going to pay for this!

Based on what happened when the admissions letters went out, it seems some of the admissions counselors make phone calls and some do not. I wouldn’t take the lack of a phone call to mean no college scholar award. The mail was supposed to be here at 1:30. Where is that mail man?!

My daughter received her RD admission letter early (with substantial Dean award); hoping that bodes well for CS award. We will likely receive letter tomorrow! Good luck to all.

I do not believe that lacking a phone call is any indication one way or another. My DS had a very strong connection with his admissions officer. They have been talking biweekly since Thanksgiving. I learned today that he was awarded the 2/3 Scholar award of $24,000. He was previously awarded a dean’s Scholarship for $20,500. I know that there were 400 applicants for the 130 college scholarships that were awarded. They cannot be combined. I am unaware if they increase over time as tuition inflates. On the positive side, I am certain that there is no minimum GPA required to maintain the scholarship. As I said in an earlier post, I know letters went out on 2/18. Good luck to all!

How many people get the College Scholar award each year? And how many of these matriculate?

Daughter got word today via a telephone message that she was a college scholar! Exciting! We won’t know the amount until we get the letter-hoepfully tomorrow, but we are hoping for the best. She has strong credentials and is a well-rounded student-sports, music, first in class, great SAT scores. Really nice to see the recognition-and it definitely makes Wooster a distinct possibility-which is exactly why these scholarships exist! After a few lackluster financial aid offers from other good schools, this helps end the week on a brighter note-----for the parents especially!!
