Have you heard from College Scholar committee?

Congratulations, darunner! My daughter is a graduating College Scholar (this May)–it’s been four amazing years.

Hindoo, wishing you an early congratulations!!!

Hindoo, how is has your daughter found their career center? Has it been helpful in this economy?

You know, I’ve encouraged her over the years to see what the career center has to offer, but she never did. Go figure. A college student not listening to her mom’s advice. :(

Okay, thanks.

Thanks Hindoo! We are excited about the scholarship! Daughter friend, a junior, loves it at Wooster-raves about it. They were friends in high school and just might spend a year at college together too. Really glad that daughter wrote the essay for this one! It seems like a great academic atmosphere and is only 3 hours from here in western NY-a big bonus for parents who might want to see their daughter’s cross country and track meets! It sounds like your daughter loved it too…great!

I got my letter yesterday but was too disappointed to respond. My D did not get the award. We are trying to see if we can afford Wooster now. It has become her number one pick. $19,500 Dean’s award still may not be enough :(

My DD received her $24k College Scholar’s notice in the mail today! The letter said more than 400 applied (a record) for the 100 scholarships. This certainly puts Wooster very high on our list. We had an unofficial visit last summer, so now we’re planning to visit officially and give it a real good look-over.

Good luck to everyone! The whole process is quite agonizing!

How big were people’s envelopes? I got a large packet today informing me of my admission and a dean’s award of 19,500 (as well as a handwritten message, which was nice!) but no mention of the college scholar award. The letter informing me of my dean’s award said I could still apply for “competitive merit scholarships” - does this just mean that my college scholar letter is still coming?

Wow, catpb! The College Scholar’s awards have increased! When my daughter was an incoming freshman, they ranged from $16,000 to $20,000. But, of course, tuitions are creeping up every year.

narsenal–Did your daughter specifically apply for the College Scholar award? There’s a separate essay for that one.

Hindoo - Yeah, I applied for the actual College Scholar Award with the separate essay and everything. I live on the west coast so my letter may just be taking awhile to arrive. I won’t panic yet and will wait patiently for Monday :)

Are you in California? (That’s where I grew up. ) … Well good luck, good luck. You’re awesome for looking at schools clear across the country. Both of my girls left Kentucky to for college–they’re in Minnesota and Northern Ohio now. It’s a great way to grow up. :)

Well, Northern Ohio, duh. :O

Washington, actually, but I have family in California! Thanks for the good wishes!

Have you also looked at Whitman and Reed? And the Claremont colleges in California?

I looked at Whitman and Reed but didn’t end up applying. I did apply to Scripps but I didn’t make the finals for their half-tuition merit scholarships which means that attending is probably impossible. My west coast schools have now been reduced to my two safeties! If all goes according to plan, I’ll be somewhere new next year, either on the east coast or in the midwest.

If I were your mother, I would be SO proud! … Too many students don’t want to leave their own backyards. It takes guts to look afar. Again, I wish you much luck.

Thank you! My mom is proud, but she’s the worried type and is having trouble imagining me going so far away. I, however, am definitely ready to experience something new :)

Your Mom sounds like me. I worried about my girls, out there in the great big, scary, evil world. They looked away for college, probably because they knew I’d suffocate them to death if they stayed within easy driving distance. … Sometimes, separation is good for both mom and daughters/sons. It allows both some space to grow up. :)

woohoo I was named a College Scholar!
