Help me find UC safeties...!

Hi everyone! Like many of the CCCers here I'm hoping for Cal or UCLA. I also want to have several other UCs as safeties yet I do not know which I can consider safeties with my particular stats. Here they are (and thanks in advance...CCers rock...I love this subculture!)

English major
3.75 GPA
TAP Certified (37+ honors units. tied for most in school history)
ASG Student Trustee
English Tutor in school educational lab
Physiological Psychology Tutor in school educational lab
PTK member
Summer Internship with Insurance Company

Thats the bulk of my stats. Thanks in advance everyone!

Great stats! I cordially feel that you're a match for UCLA. You being an english tutor basically implies that you will write outstanding essays, which is basically all you need on top of your ECs. However, for CAL, you can never be a match - they can be pretty shady on their acceptances. On the other hand, will you be IGETC certified with at least 60 units completed by spring? May I ask what community college you attend?

Back to your question, the only "safety" schools for you would be UCSD and UCI. But I think you'll like UCSB more for english.

Are you kidding?? All of the UCs besides UCLA and Berk are safeties for you. Berk and UCLA are matches.

Kevintech, yah I'll be done with IGETC by Spring for sure. I go to College of the Canyons! Yah, I was thinking UCSD and UCI so I'll probably apply to those two plus UCR. I've heard good things about UCSB but I'm not really feeling their reputation as a party school. I would not like telling someone I go to UCSB, only to get a look that I'm some stoned out beach boy.

Thanks for the help!

gabew42, I've just heard so many stories from friends of people getting rejected into schools like UCSD but getting into CAL or UCLA that I do not know what to expect at all. Thanks for the vote of confidence though! It certainly helps as I'm really anxious to see where I end up. The months after turning in my application will be brutal =[

Cardinalfocused, with all due respect, it seems like you may have put too much weight on anecdotal evidence. Look at the figures. Ask the experts. You will not get rejected from any of the UCs (except Cal and UCLA--those are the only ones you can't be sure of). It's good to realize that there is a chance, actually, that you could be rejected--it's also good to realize that chance is like .5% and thus you should plan accordingly.

gabew42, thats awesome to hear man! Yah, I probably have been getting too much of my information from stories of friends.

Do you know by the way, if the lower and middle tier UCs could possibly offer a student like me scholarships? I doubt I would qualify for financial aid so I'm basically wondering what type of stats it would take to earn merit scholarships from UCs.

Thanks, gabew42. Your vouch of confidence means alot. Trully, I would be happy to be at most any UC (it certainly beats the CC I'm at now!)

We are rewarded for being California residents and going to CCCs. I'm not sure about the stats for scholarships but I mean, you might as well apply to several of them and see what happens.

True. Where are you applying to gabew42?

7 out of 9. All of them except Merced and Riverside.

Damn that works...More choices and all with just filling out one common app.

Random Tangent: I wonder if anyone ever has Merced as their top UC choice.

7 out of 9? Sounds a little desperate.

It's a simple cost/benefit analysis, kevintech. The benefit of having more choices outweighs the cost of 55 bucks per campus. That's it.

Bump...

My number one choice university is now Cal, as something pretty devestating happened recently. I do not want to attend school here in Los Angeles (UCLA)...

I was just wondering what were my chances at getting into Cal. I remember talking to my english undergraduate advisor about it and she put getting into Cal in the same league as getting into a top fifteen university (like a lotto of sorts). I was surprised by this because I honestly thought that all one needed was a good gpa, honors program completed, and decent extracurriculars and they would have more than a good shot at Cal. Can you guys assign a percentage probability as to my chances of getting into Cal?

Also, are their any other top universities that I could get into that are far from Los Angeles and whose app deadline is still far away? Rice? Any decent Lacs?

Thank you in advance guys. Sorry for the rambling and sentence structure, my mind isn't all here right now.

english major you should get in UCLA and UCB

Cardinal,

Your chances for Cal are very very good. I wouldn't sweat it too much.

Is your new LA issue something personal?

yeah, its personal problems so **** the bruins go bears!!!

haha, did anyone see final destination three? The part where the football players chant **** the bruins...is incredibly hysterical.

Why is your name cardinalfocused if you want to go to cal and ucla?

well, I originally wanted to go to the Farm for undergrad transfer but my stats are way too low. I guess it still applies because I want to go there for grad school...

Pfft, don't let your bad experiences with a Sunset hooker cloud the fact that Bruins are way better than Bears. ;)
