HKU or HKUST

Hey guys, I have an urgent question. I have made a grave mistake in applying to HKU. I have accidentally typed in the wrong course code and was stupid enough not to pick up on it. However, I have already emailed the university in asking if I can transfer my application to psychology (my originally intended course) and my personal statement is my evidence - it is completely centered around my interest in Psychology. On the other hand though, I know I have been rejected from the ‘mistake course’ which is Government Law - which I had no intention of applying for. Do you think it is still possible for my application to be transferred?

If it helps, I take IB and my predicted grades are 37/42. I have done work experience and my EE around Psychology.

HKU:
TheGrand - BBA(IBGM)
michelleger - BSc
SDG1 - BBA Econ/Fin
kawaiigurl- BBA Econ/Fin :)

HKUST:
ysbera - BEng & BBA(Technology and Management)
merrypips - BBA
spillcanvas - BBA(Global Business)
Donutz - BBA

btw i have some questions!! can we change major after we get accepted?
Also, even tho im a econ/fin major, can i still choose course outside of the biz skul? such as spanish, photography, literature…etc?
How is the edu system like? is it similar to america/uk in any ways?
anddd, are there many opportunities of internship/job/scholarship once we get accepted?
is it hard to be an exchange student later on in the second or third year?

LASTLY~~why did you guys choose HKU/HKUST:)?
thanks!!!

@vanille: Honestly, it will depend if the psychology dept decides to admit you because offers have already been given out. With your predicted IB Scores, I do not think that is a problem, now its up to the department if they want to make an exception to admit you.

@kawaiigurl: The HK education system is more closely aligned to that of UK than of US. It will be very difficult to change your major. You can however, still take courses outside of the Bus/Econ dept, since you have some elective courses which you can choose from quite a number of other courses. You should check on HKU’s website for more detailed information on this. There are many opportunities available in HKU, of course you should definitely be one of the top students since things such as internships and exchanges are available for everyone.

@TheGrand: Thank you very much for providing insight! This has gotten me worried sick (literally and metaphorically) for a few days. Because of the countless public holidays they haven’t been able to get back to me yet. I’m hoping they will give me good news on Monday (tomorrow) - after I come back from the first IB English exam!

@vanille: No problem. Many of us here are doing the IB too.

A correction on my last sentence of my last post: “are NOT available for everyone - you must be qualified”

AHHHHH Tomorow… I am going to WASH U

o.O?
You are saying that just in case you don’t get 40? haha

yea…

I am getting quite nervous. Are you studying still? My efficiency is really low right now and I don’t like tomorrow’s subjects too much.

Are you taking Chinese A2?

@TheGrand: The same can be done at LSE…so why not LSE? It’s world renowned, has the MOST international students in the world, best social sciences faculty + LONDON!

if i go to HKU, i’d definitely want to do the exchange program at US, or UK. preferably at NYU. So i wana know if its extremely hard to do so? or its actually not that hard? thanks so much

more questions…

1]where are you all from :)?
2] can international students WORK part-time though? like…some people said only HK ppl can work in HK…
3] are you plannin to do exchange programs?
4] do you think u’d feel left-out by the HK locals and mainland students at HKU :(? this is actually wut worries me the most :frowning: caz i don’t speak canto!
5] have you applied for housing? which dorm?
6] does HKU have an orientation for students to sign up for classes or sth like that? how do we sign up for classes?
7] what’s ur plan after graduating from hku :)?

THANKSSSSS

one more important question…
WHEN IS THE DEADLINE TO PAY DEPOSIT???
i can’t find this information in my email nor on the website:(
im getting a bit nervous :frowning:

have you guys all got the admission packet? (HKU)

@TheGame: The amount I would be paying to go to LSE will be enough for me to get 5 Bachelor degrees at HKU.

@kawaiigurl: Again, you will have to check for your particular course. If you are accepted to the BBA IBGM program, you are almost guaranteed an exchange, and NYU is an option. But again, the IBGM program itself is already self selective. The deadline for the deposit is May 8th for me. You ** really ** want to research those things on HKU website, it is very informative. I would not be staying at campus housing anyway. More information will be given when you have made the deposit. It will be distributed in June.

20% is the international quota for HKU - or at least it is what it aims to achieve, so I believe you would not be left out for sure. And you are making the assumptions here that HKers don’t communicate in English, and believe me, they do.

yes i know that they speak english, its just tht outside of class, they would speak canto u noe wut i mean?

btw, how did u noe ur deposit deadline?? is it in the admission packet? caz i haven’t receieved mine :(

yes i know that they speak english, its just tht outside of class, they would speak canto u noe wut i mean?

btw, how did u noe ur deposit deadline?? is it in the admission packet? caz i haven’t receieved mine :(

@kawaiigurl: I live in Hong Kong and I know a ton of people who go to HKU. Be assured that there are a lot of people from international schools (like myself) who socialize completely in english. I have worried about this myself, but my friends told me that it isn’t a problem. But yes, there might be some culture clash - but honestly there are a lot of people like you who don’t speak cantonese so you don’t have to worry.

@vanille: thank youuu :slight_smile: !

btw i was stupid so i didn’t apply the entry scholarship at hku :frowning:
i was searching on hku website…and there seems to b quite many opportunities to apply for scholarship. but how?? does anyone know?

@thegame : Personally I feel LSE is overrated. They admit mostly 4As scorers for A-levels.
No campus. World reknown but everyone is heading to UK & Australia thus loses its appeal. HK is relatively new to the world for its recruitment for higher education, but if you actually check its reputation its the same if not better with a proper campus. Lastly , its so much cheaper. I would not want to go to LSE just because I want to see London. As an Asian , I find it very shallow of my fellow asians who hail the west. No offense to the west , just aiming at those asian people who thinks west are better just because they are west. That’s total nonsense.

I also want to add a thing.

For any one who is concerned about HK Universities vs. US or UK or any others. Seriously just wait until your scores AP, A Level, IB or whatever come out and then if you can, then make a decision.

@TheGrand are you going to accept your UCAS offers though? Do you know what happens if you accept them and don’t go? I want to play it really safe haha…

I quite agree with some points dq has made - a western education does not necessarily mean better.
Hence, I don’t think I will regret that much if I give up my LSE offer.

@kawaiigurl: The deposit deadline is given to me via my acceptance mail.

@ysbera: I actually do A1 Chinese, but my Chinese is really dreadful haha. And yes, I would be accepting my UCAS offers, it is fine if you do not wish to attend later.

ARRRRRGHHHH IB EXAMS TOMORROW - Good luck to all! and ysbera, we really need our 40 pts!
