Yea but that’s only if you stay home and nothing (did that in 9th grade summer, felt really bad). For this summer I plan on interning for the UN and then going traveling, so 2 month isn’t really enough. But anyway I want to have a bit more time to get ready for university, I am pretty sick of school right now.

Haha - ‘to get ready for university’? or rather ‘get away from university’ lol
I think my parents are making me learn to drive -_- which I really despise 'cause I’m convinced I will cause an accident…

LOL, thegrand, me too! i have to get my permit re-extended since i still havent gotten my license…i live with my dad and his teaching style totally clashes with my personality, i am convinced ill crash the car! good thing hk’s public transport is so nice!

Haha getting away from university. I don’t feel ready for 4 more years of school.
I don’t want to learn to drive in HK, its the other way round compared to rest of the world, maybe except a few other countries and I drove once when I was really young and crashed into a tree so I don’t really have fond memories. But hey if I get a BMW to drive (not from my parents haha…), then that’s another story.

PRECISELY, I really don’t want to learn to drive since I wouldn’t want to destroy my dad’s only asset - car LOL. Hong Kong is such a busy place to drive anyway… -__-

I’ve heard from a person who lives in HK right now, and you don’t need a car to get around ! haha so I think I’m just going to use the awesome public transportation. =]

Hey all! I was recently admitted to HKUST. My school in the U.S. didn’t have IB so I’m wondering if there’s anyone who’s in my situation that is having trouble finding a way to finance their way through university! And if so, how have you worked with it? I’ve got 13 days left to respond…

Congratulations everyone on getting the opportunities to study with the BEST in Asia! The scary thing I think is having had U.S. education background and experiencing epic HK/UK-style education… what a culture shock… lol anyone know what I’m talking about…?

Hey congrats to you Phoenix. I sort of understand how you feel, I am right now in an international school where most people are from different nationalities so going to HKUST where 80% are local Hong Kong people is definitely a change for me. But I think I’ll be fine.

Also there are a few Americans here or one (Michelleger) as well.

Isn’t HKUST engineering around 80,000 one year. Like $10,000 is that a huge problem for you? I think you could email the school and see if they can offer you some kind of scholarship (if you already haven’t). I am not really having any finance issues but recently I went to a HSBC credit card or something presentation. They offer student loans at a considerable cheap interest rate. Also I heard HKUST offers other scholarships except the IB one? And maybe if you get at least B+ average you can qualify for scholarships in your second year if you don’t receive one your first year.

Hey,
I know its quite personal, but I think HKU dorm is pretty gross…
You know, international ppl are to stay in the dorm, and its quite a big thing to concern.
So i tried to find some clips for both of hku and ust dorms, and I think ust dorm is a bit cleaner… nonetheless, ust bed looks extremely cheap and tiny, which bothers me a lot…
Do you guys have any ideas about the dorm?
I am nothing spoiled nor millionaire, but I really really hate dirty surroundings… :(

I don’t know much about the HKU dorms, but HKUST doesn’t look so great either! haha but I guess I’ll just have to live with it. and apparently there’s a new hall opening for the upcoming school year! I’m okay with small beds and such, but the bathrooms are shared by each floor…yikes!

HKUST dorms indeed look pretty bad:
https://sao.ust.hk/housing/accommodation.html
(Click on any of the halls)

But last time I went to HK, all the houses seemed small. So I guess small rooms are common in HK.

Anyway its university, its good to endure some hardship :).

OMGGG I just typed up a really long post and hit back accidentally…
OK
UST DORM:
Small, Unsophisticated, Clean - depends on how well you keep it that way.
2 in each room. *Also you might want to note that there isn’t a lot of storage space AT ALL. Bed is fine for an average Asian, small for an average white/black guy.

Rmb, the typical room is Hong Kong IS small anyway.

Toilet:
5/6 Showers X 2 of them on each floor. There is also a common room which can fit about 15 people-ish. Clashes in showers never happen, because everyone uses them at different time. The cleanliness of the bathroom is quite acceptable :)

Currently still busying with the student visa application stuffs. Hope I meet you guys there … Can’t wait for the orientation package and all to arrive!

hi phoenix, im in the US too…i think there will be some culture shock switching from us education to HK, but it will be interesting to experience, tho probably really stressful at times too! hmm, finance wise im lucky to have my parents supporting me, HKU gave me a little scholarship, about a 3-4 thousand US dollars when converted. you might be able to find some study abroad scholarships, but i think best bet would be to ask HKUST about it and work really hard your first year to qualify for scholarship the next year =)

hmmm, i saw some videos of the dorms on youtube a while back and they didnt seem too bad. tho they are quite small, but i think they are suitable, besides very little time is spent sleeping according to local HK-ers. and seems like a lot of time is spent in the common rooms. but heres a video link, the video is long but the first few seconds you can see an HKU dorm room(and various other times thruout).
hey congrats DQ on choosing/getting accepted to UST! im just about finished my visa app, i keep putting off mailing it! =P

For those who are wraping up the visa stuff, (HKUST)
I sent the material last week… Just to make sure,

1) Is it correct that I am not supposed to finish part b at all?
2) Where is the proof for accomodation arrangement? I didn’t put anything like that at all
3) How can the school automatically draw out money from our credit card when they only ask for the card number? It’s just wierd… I just can’t get the banking thing… sososo headache for me gosh, Or do they ask us to confirm later?

@rubichino: did you make up your mind for hkust? b/c you said ur filing the student visa for hkust now.

@michelleger: did you pick a hall yet? I am just curious. And about the student visa, I didn’t get any instruction from hku about it. Are you filing it out early?

SDG1, noo, lol, i am so indecisive about these halls, i dont know what to pick! all i know is i am avoiding st.john’s, since i heard those girls are kind of catty =P not sure about guys tho…what about you, any idea of what hall you like? i want a hall close to campus thats sort of old so it has more hall culture =P

and about the student visa, im filling it out late in fact, haha, since i got my offer like 2 months ago and in my admissions packet it said on one of the pages to fill out the student visa ASAP after getting an offer. so i would suggest you to fill yours out now too, just because it can take soo long to process and if theres any issue you dont want that to stress you out this summer getting ready for uni! other than the info in admissions packet, HKU wont send you anything to tell you to fill out your student visa. they say it is the student’s responsibility, bla bla bla, that sort of thing. heres a link to all the visa help stuff on cedars and a link to the actual visa app, if you have questions and email cedars they answer right away as well —> [Campus Life](http://www.cedars.hku.hk/cedars1/SubCampusLife.aspx?submenu=../VisaMatters/Menu/VisaMatters&cmd=./VisaMatters/FormsNotes&lkind=11&slt=5) or you could ask me since ive browsed thru that stuff a million times =D

rubichino, nope, unless your married with kids =P i didnt even print that last page about dependants out since it didnt apply. idk what you mean by proof for accomodation so i am assuming thats unique to UST’s visa app sponsorhip stuff? and yea! i wondered that too, how do they withdraw the money?

@michelleger: I am leaning toward Simon K.Y Lee Hall now, cuz I think its a pretty active hall. I hope international students will be considered with a higher priority, so we can get our first choice hall. Yea, I’ll try to fill out the student visa. Is it very long and tedious?
