Hey

I had an interview for a engineering and business course this March and they didn’t ask about knowledge related to my course but more about why I chose that course.

ysbera> thank you. i’m relieved to hear that haha. it would be kinda intimidating if they do so. but i guess i would still read up just in case =)

by the way, was your interview a telephone interview or an on-campus one?

it was a telephone interview with 2 people.

@ ysbera : I have high suspicion that there are more people on the other side listening to me during my interview ‘other than my interviewer’. :D

did anyone had interview on-campus? i’ve read on forums that UST like to have group interview… _

wow i just realised there are students studying in singapore in this thread too =D waves at fridayevening and TheGrand LOL

@minacho are u singaporean? if u are, i am pretty darn excited. hahaha. i think i’m the only one here in this forum.

anyway, my interview was just with one lady on the phone. it was actually quite casual and friendly. she just ask me why i choose them and the course. and some stuff about myself. i think they just want to see how you project yourself and your confidence level rather than your knowledge in what you applied for.

fridayevening> that’s nice to hear =D. hope everything will go smoothly for me too…
i was born in hk but i migrated to sg =P. so yea i’m both s’porean and hk-er haha.

Hm… it seems interesting…
Just wondering for those who picked HKUST, what attracted you to pick UST over HKU? Or did you apply to both, or did you just apply to one?

^second guessing your decision? :D

I did a summer research at UST and it was very easy to get to the MTR station from there by mini-buses. The public transit in HK is ridiculously good. It makes NYC’s look third world. So don’t worry about any inconvenience about getting to the city. My guess is the only people who think it’s not convenient are the HK locals who are so spoiled that even a 10-min wait on MTR is unacceptable for them (I think the trains come every 5 mins during NON-rush hours; during rush hours, the frequency is every two mins!!).

Okay, I am so excited that I am going to throw my old laptop away and get a new one!
Probably buying Toshiba Satellite M300!

@ minacho so are u in ns or studying now?

actually when i decided to go to hk to further my studies, i had only hku in my mind. because i knew i wanted to study business, i was pretty skeptical about ust since it appeared to be focused on engineering and science (from its name).

at that point of time, i only wanted to go to 2 unis, hku or university of Sydney. so i decided to pay a visit to both campuses to see which i like better. so off i went to hk and visited hku along with my dad who is a hk-er. at about that time, there were news about ust’s emba being second in the world or something like that and it totally changed my perception about ust. i went to do some research about ust and found out it is actually a pretty good business university. and the campus was really beautiful, reminded me of my school in singapore. the sight of clearwater bay was totally captivating.

but the most important aspect that made ust my first choice over hku was because of one staff in the international office. He not only convinced me on ust’s credibility, but he actually gave me a tour around the campus. and the most amazing thing was that he was also part singaporean! it was so different when i was hku, where all the staff did was pass me a pamphlet and left me to wander around myself. after my trip, i was so sure i want to go to ust, i decided not to visit sydney at all.

anyway, in the end, i did applied for all 3 unis, hku, ust and sydney. sydney gave me their offer first but i was seriously only waiting ust’s offer. when i eventually received it, the rest was history. i mailed out my acceptance letter the next few days after i settled all the paperwork.

and i forgot to add, hku just sent me my letter of rejection. haha. it’s kind of demoralizing to be honest, knowing you are not good enough for them. if it wasn’t for ust, i might suffering from depression now. hahahaa.

LOL, relax friday - HKU is afterall is more selective one, but since you have UST in your mind, its good then. :)

@Sam: I am not second guessing my choice, since I didn’t apply to UST, and I am just as you describe, I find UST rural hahahahahha. I just thought I wouldn’t fit in as well in UST, since I’ve been there for a month.

fridayevening> haha i’m female… dun need ns =P anyway i’m studying now.

being rejected by HKU is still not as bad… i got rejected by NUS Science last yr _. so i just wanna try my luck in hk unis this yr haha.

@minacho where are u studying? which year did u apply for to enter ust?

fridayevening> i’m currently studying at SIM. i applied for entry to ust’s 1st yr…

i was frm jc and my grades for A levels was average (all Bs for H2 subjects)… i couldn’t apply for all the engineering courses because i didn’t take physics at O level =x… so i had rather limited choices to choose from and i ended up in SIM… i’m still rather upset by the fact that i end up studying in SIM despite my decent grades… =

so…speaking of laptops…does anyone have an opinion on the macbook? should i wait to buy one in HK?

You could Michelle, the laptops in Hong Kong have quite reasonable prices. If you are getting it in the US, just make sure there is warranty and a service center in Hong Kong

What kinda language do HK ppl speak?
I have been learning Mandarin for three years with a Taiwanese teacher at school, and She told me HK and Taiwan speak quite differently… which might mean I have to learn all over again (I can’t speak or listen much anyway though)

hm, yea i suppose ill get one in HK, tho my mom insists on getting me one now, but she knows hk is cheaper, hah!

rubichino, the two official languages in HK are english and cantonese. and cantonese and mandarin sound pretty different, altho they are similar, if that makes sense…my friends told me to move in with them so they can all immerse me in cantonese, lol!! probably wont end up being very successful with that, and i think im going to end up at minimal cantonese ability when I reach HK this summer. But i heard this one int., french, learned it in like 3 months and is very proficient now…so im confident that as long as i remain ambitious ill pick it up by 2nd semester. maybe ill watch some of those crazy HK comedies =P
