yeah, cantonese and mandarin are pretty similiar, but they are pronounced differently. the sentence structuring is the same. so if you know mandarin, you probably should have it easier learning cantonese. having said that, i still cant speak cantonese except a couple of commonly used words. and this despite having a dad who is a hongkonger. hahahaa

Mandarin and Cantonese would be more different than you think it is similar - for foreigners.

Cantonese is substantially harder too since it has nine tones for each ‘word’ whereas Mandarin has four. Hong Kongers speak Cantonese for the bulk’

hachaaaaa! i think i got my hall choices, thought i would share~~ for HKU, im gonna put down: 1st choice- Lady Ho Tung Hall 2nd Choice- Simon KY Lee hall 3rd Choice- Suen Chi Sun OR Swire. omgosh U-hall is a freaking castle! but its boys only, boo! hmm, idk, i might switch my 1st and 2nd choices but probably not…LHT is perfect, its motto and emblem is so perfect for me, the unicorn! for grace and strength. LOL, i feel like im going to hogwarts! my dream when i was 11, ahahaha.

So its me here again, and UST is not behaving! This’ll be my second interview with them, WHY the torture ??!!

wow, hku already ask u about hall choices? ust people, have you guys got anything yet about it?

they didnt directly ask, but on the cedars cite and hku site theyve opened applications for exchange and NON-jupas non local applicants. so internationals can apply now(since May 1st actually.)

Am I supposed to wait and get the visa application instruction letter from HKU or download from the website by myself?

rubichino- there shouldve been instruction with your acceptance. its in a packet labeled important notes for international students or something like that. in it, it says the student must apply for a student visa asap and that its the students responsibilities, bla bla bla, so dont wait for instruction from hku because i dont believe theyll send anymore, maybe a reminder as the deadline draws near… i sent mine in last week =P

@Michelle: You really do sound like you are going for a vacation -_-
@Flibb: I haven’t really heard of anyone I know having a second interview… Hm… which course is this for again??

How’s everyone spending their next 3 months?

@TheGrand: Well apparently I am special … Its for either Dual T&M program of BEng, not so sure which. Lets see what comes of it!

My conspiracy theory: Last interview was a set up interview by HKU to see if i’ll really choose HKU over UST :D

thegrand-getting into HKU is my fav accomplishment so far in my life, i cant help that im excited =P i cant tell what you mean by your typing tone(lol), but i feel like youre insinuating im not going to work which isnt me at all! to me vacation is being busy with things you love so if you insist on saying that i suppose its true…=D

Hahaha, not at all - You will get what I mean when you know me in person this August or September I’m pretty sure there will be another new word for ‘typing tone’ pretty soon.

Flibb - Which will you choose assuming you are offered a place at both institutions? What did you apply for in HKU - if I may ask?

We should really start exchanging contact details pretty soon hehehee - when we’re all set on where we are going to.

cooool, yeaa its so hard to tell when you dont know someone, for some reason im extra defensive when it comes to my work ethic, so it just…it sounds really dumb but it hurt my feelings lol, but not anymore, yea you’ll understand maybe once you meet me too!

o! and for contact details…wat about facebook? does every1 have one of those? mayb we could start a group or something, hahha

TheGrand: I applied for BEng at HKU and Dual T&M AND BEng at UST. Well everything depends on how much money I get, and my chances of getting a scholarship at HKU are greater as they have this scholarship program with my country (Pakistan).

Wow you guys are totally thrilled about HKU, wonder how you’ll spend the summer waiting…HKU Summer School? :D

@michelleger: Okay, I found “Visa matter for students” in the pdf file… I’ll probably finish it by tmr… Hey, but what if I already applied for HKUST visa and applying for HKU visa again? What would the immigration people think about me?

Hey guys, I have only taken AP Physics B and AP Calculus BC to prepare for engineering classes so far,
Today I learned that HK schools expect students to be ready to follow the materials once they enter…
Usually, US colleges offer some fundamental classes for freshmen as far as I know,
So I am very worried about it now… (I’ll definitely go through AP Physics C in the next month, since I managed to finish B from nothing in one month as well…)

What should I study for the rest of 3 months remaining before the school opens?

rubichino- i dont know what the immigration people would think, id assume it would be okay, since you would have to do separate ones to fill in the school part correctly.

Don’t worry too much. As long as you don’t slack everything should be fine.

I got into HKU!!! WOOHOO!

Congrats Flibb!!
So where will you be choosing now?
