you know you guys are lucky that you all can have time to prepare for college. i still have to complete my conscription service in singapore. i’m so afraid being left behind when i start university after 2 years of not being in classes. =(

anyway add me in the list too. ust bba! hahaha.

You are suppose to add yourself but nevermind I do you the favour :D

@Flibb : The hku entrance scholarship requires another application form for it. If you filled that form when you apply for admission. They will most probably tell you how much you got when you get the offer.

@Flibb: No idea when they’ll inform, but as of what you are offered now, where would you go?

I am actually pretty overwhelmed that quite a substantial portion are going to UST - did you guys apply to HKU too? Or you just decided UST is the institution for you?

@TheGrand: I think it’d prolly be HKU. UST seems to be every one’s choice, I guess partially because of their extensive outreach programs (like they come to our school every year with AMAZING prospectuses and materials) but mostly because it has gained a repo as a somewhat more ‘modern’ uni with a more fun, exciting and enjoyable life, which has cutting edge facilities, top notch yet engaging faculty with grads from top unis of the world and extensive research programs, and a beautiful resort-campus by the shore (wow, i feel like changing my mind now :D)

oh I am so happy i’m not from the Chinese mainland…10k students for just 300 seats!!

@TheGrand: My dad works for a big company and knows some people in other sectors in China and HK. He said 100% of them thought HKU is still No.1 and can’t ignore the span of the school (100 years) and the alumni connection of HKU. That is why my family ended up paying deposit to HKU as well… But HKUST is definitely more modern and newer, and engineering faculty is awsome…

@SDG and Rubichino, my dad works for Nokia and his colleges at Nokia and other big technological firms all like HKUST better. They work extensively with HKUST but not with HKU.

@michelleger- haha I remember when I was waiting for the admissions decision from UST, I used to read this thread every day just to get a feel of what admissions was like for international students. Yes, I felt like a bit of a stalker. Then I was glad that you were from the U.S. and a female applicant like myself even though you applied to HKU. I applied for many of the same reasons you did: language of instruction, affordability, and a program that sounded stellar. Also, the fact that it’s really impressive to classmates when they hear you’re taking the road less travelled (courtesy of Robert Frost) ;P.

Regarding the culture shock thing about competition… I was offered a scholarship for full tuition but I have to maintain a B+ or more average. And I AM SCAREEEEEEEEEEEDDD OUT OF MY MIND OF BELL CURVES… ESPECIALLY IN ENGINEERING. We work on point-scales in America!! HAHAHA. Anyways… I have until June 5th to send in my reply (they just informed me about the scholarship offer) and intent to register. I have not even started applying for visa yet! :S

phoenix ~~ im so happy you got a full ride, b/c it seemed like you wanted to go so much =) LOL, i check this thread everyday, never felt like a stalker tho, hahaha. and hahaha, frost- yea everyone i know thinks its really cool that im going to HK for studies, gets so much attention when its announced at senior banquets. you dont have to worry about your visa too much, technically you can go to HK on a tourist visa for, i think, 90 days…
im scared about the bell curves too, i was offered some scholarship with the same reqs =P

Alrite, I need to know about the dorms in hku now… I want a dorm where I can improve english and Chinese at the same time… Any recommendation? (prefer boy and girl dorms)

You should seriously consider UC Berkeley TheGrand.
If you are financial capable I think its a great Uni to go to. Lets put apart Yale / Stanford / MIT/Harvard … UCBerkeley or UPenn is certainly highly regarded in any choice of UG course you undertake.

HKU is not bad either :P.
So rubicinho you are going to HKU? … Nooo…

To Everyone : How many of you thought of remaining & starting your career in HK or Mainland China after you graduate?
And why?

dq- i would like to end up in HK or any cosmopolitan-type city, because the life there is really appealing to me, seems really diverse and fast-paced, people always doing things…but i might come back to the US, ill see how i like it after uni there, hah.

rubichino- depends what hall life you want, like little hall culture or a lot? near main campus or sports center? u-hall is boys only, but it is the best one for dorms(looks like a castle!), tho i heard hall orientation is sorta harsh! simon ky lee is right next to main campus and they are boys and girls. i think lee shau kee hall is really laidback, and starr maybe.
