Well, to be honest, I will regret a little for not going to Berkeley. After all, its a really good school in Sunny California and I’ve worked very hard to get in there. I’d love to go if the fees were the same as HKU’s. Other than finance being an issue and another problem is that my parents think its a public school after all (so maybe the facilities aren’t as good comparatively to other private schools yet I am paying roughly the same fees)

Again, I got into quite a good course in HKU and my family hopes I will spend more time with them (since they are in HK) and I wish for the same too. Its much cheaper and I’m speculating I will probably be working somewhere in China/HK/Singapore in the near future - so perhaps having a US education may not substantially put me in a better position - Although I know the US undergraduate education experience is admittedly incomparable to anywhere else’s. But well, I guess everyone has to sacrifice something right? It would be a bit too unfair to make my parents pay for that whole lot of money.

Yea I get it. These days I am having some troubles deciding where to go to college. I love WashU but I probably love HKUST more because of the money difference. But I guess hey in the 21st century, the people who will succeed are the ones who make different choices to others.

BTW I might want to transfer in my second year to my dream Ivy League even though admission rates 3% which doesn’t seem so bad (reminds me of international undergrad admit rate). I think I will do this, going to that school has been my dream for a long time and if I don’t try, I will probably regret it.

Also as we both want an MBA for now. Lets meet up in HBS or Haas (love this one)…

Btw TheGrand one key factor in favor of HKUST for me is that because of the money saved, I can buy shares. And being in HK and over 18 years old, I am able to have a stock broker and I bet professors in my program can give me advice. Have you ever thought of purchasing shares? Given the current market situation, many investment analysts have said many shares are below their intrinsic values so if you dare to make an investment, probably long run investment, there’s a lot of profit to be made. If everything goes well, in about 4 years (when I graduate), I could have earned more money than my friends going to top US schools could have earned in 4 years after their graduation which is nice.

We should abolished the concept of money So that everyone can enjoy whatever they like regardless of how wealthy they are. But then again what will you subsitute it with?
I think econs will be 1 of the most interesting course with alot of arguments and unorthodox ideas to be brought up. Damn why am I doing engineering :D.

PS : ysbera : Its sounds nice to say i graduated from hku & made a few hundred grands along the way !

I was thinking of transferring to XX too LOL which has an admit rate of 2%. ANYWAY, I realised I shouldn’t be doing that since I should act more realistically and just focus on my undergraduate studies.

I won’t being having the extra $$ which I saved (unlike you), well its just that the burden on my parents are lighter. But you do have a very valid point, but you really have to be very careful with that, because shares are not a reflection of the strength of the company, it is extremely speculative and unpredictable :)

@ysbera : wow, you have got the same perception as I am… I am going to buy shares with the extra money I have saved too, and since HK is one of the asia financial hub, i have always think that it would be a good place for us to study how the financial market works…

Actually , I had an offer from UK university - University of Warwick to study economics… but then I decided to put it aside, as I think HK gives more opportunities for students like us in terms of practicing business and financial market. Really hope that I won’t regret over my choice.

Right, so here is one thing which has been bothering me…how strict are HKU and UST about their conditional offer policy, as in, what if I the grades I get are lower than those that they have asked for? Straight away rejection?

flibb i was wondering the same thing. im a little nervous that my average will go down in calculus after the final! hope not.

and, i think i may have made a mistake. so i sent in all my visa app stuff, but since i havent got a confirmed admission, they cant process it. I must have misinterpreted the site, because I thought that HKU CEDARS would still send it over and process it but that they would withhold the label until confirmed. i was wrong, they emailed me today and said i can email a copy of the confirmed letter of admission but not until then would they be able to send it the embassy. gahh, my AP exam scores wont come out until July, =/.

haha same with me, I’m really hoping my maths doesn’t go down, cuz the offer is really hard to maintain Unluckily for me, my scores don’t come out until August 11th, so I really dunno what to do…

I think HK Unis are relatively strict with the conditional offers (at least for locals, not sure for internationals). I’m just waiting till my ib results come out ;)

yeah thats what ive heard…i just cant wait til school is over so my grades will be finalized and, hopefully, they will all be at the level they need to be. and then ill worry about AP exams, tho i felt confident about those…knocks on wood

Hi all! So I was doing some digging to attempt to come up with better info on student loans for US students directly enrolled @ HKU when I came across this site. I’m definitely going to HKU at this point- I worked my way through a conditional to an unconditional offer of admission, signed it, and accepted that and the entrance scholarship they offered me, so I’m pretty much committed (and delighted) at this point. The thing is- my entrance scholarship is only for HKD$10k, so I’m going to need to find some other sources for student loans (I’ve been living independently for years now, but my parents are willing to co-sign). I don’t know what they did, but apparently HKU ****ed off someone in the US Department of Education because they got their ability to endorse federal aid stuff (fafsa, stafford loans, etc) revoked about a year ago. I got back from my first trip to Hong Kong about a week ago and CEDARS was pretty unhelpful- do any of you have experience trying to get student loans to go to HKU, and where do you get them from?

mm, im not familiar with any student loans, i tried to look up study abroad scholarships once but most of them were just for exchanges. and yeah, HK doesnt give out loans to non-locals(i thought), and US wont give out aid to students going abroad, i was sort of banking on the hundreds of scholarships available to HKU students. although i really shouldnt, but i know theres loads of scholarships available to students already in HKU. theres a page on the site somewhere that lists them all, and there are a ton

Ok, yeah- it’s strange because the US will give you money to go to CUHK, but not HKU. Why? I dunno. I only got like HKD$10,000 from entrance scholarships, though hopefully I’ll do better after this coming year.

on a side note- how did you know to call me mm, or was that just luck? (those are my actual initials)

Hi, I am from malaysia. I am a new member for my first post.
I got an offer from UST for IEEM. May i ask after we submit the deposit for 20000HKD to book the place. Will I get back my deposit if i decided not to study there( i just want to secure a place while searching for schorlarship). I only decided to study there if i get schorlarship or study loan because it is really costful to my family. Any recomment on study loan or schorlarship to apply as an international student. Hopefully can get some advice from msia student.

@jacque88: Hi, I am from Malaysia too. You will NOT get back your deposit if you plan not to study there after you have paid. The deposit will lost its purpose if they refund you. Where are you still waiting for? Singapore? IPTA?

Wow, just finished 50 pages of reading this thread. Some interesting stuff.
My situation looks like this: I have been accepted to the BBA at HKUST and also mangement at Cass Business School in London. I have kind of (99%) made up my mind for UST. Nice campus, nice weather, cheaper cost of living and the prospects upon graduation are the biggest factors for me. I was wondering if there are any Europeans going to UST next year (I’m from Sweden)?

@jacque88
I have also payed the deposit and I was told that there are ways to get the deposit back. Or at least I know about one way. I have a conditional offer now (in order to get an unconditional offer I need to do an English test). However if I would “fail” this test I would not meet the university’s entry requirements and therefore get my deposit back. This is of course only possible if you have the conditional offer, and the condition is that you need to do an English test.

Wow. I did not know that there would be so many international applicants to HKUST. I thought that the university would be mostly predominated by PRC students. Well, I will be a student there soon in the BSc, Biology.

Thank you for replying and information.
Donutz: Ya waiting for IPTA too. Actually the problem studying in UST is only financial problem. I got friend who are studying over there too. I though they will offer me some schorlarship after i contacted the professor over there, i cant received the schorlarship the reason is because they do not offer schorlarship to direct entry student because i took diploma so i though of direct entry. I will save a year over there but now they consider me as 1st year student.

ericedholm: Thanks reply. Me too conditional offer. I need to get my final GPA(3.3 an above) well already seek for my result from my lecturer so i think is no problem for me to get the unconditional offer. FINANCIAL is my problem. I didt know they do not offer schorlarship to direct entry because i can do credit transfer.
