HKU or HKUST

thanks donutz for your reply.
Is the degree world recognized, if i plan to go back and work in my country,
will it be recognized.
waiting for their reply on scholarship
and wanted to change my BEng from mech to CSIE.Lets hope they change it for me.
r u also goin there.
where r u from.

guys i applied arnd end of march to hkust, now they have sent be tht my application is accepted coz i dint have the marksheet till end of may. They have sent me an offer letter and welcome to hkust and a student visa from.
This means i dont have to give any interview and have been accepted and what is the 120 credit program.

@niksy_nik7: You are most welcomed. Of course the degree is world recognized, since HKUST is so well-known worldwide. They send you the welcome thing and student visa application form means you have reached the last step. No more interviews. You are definitely accepted. Congratulations! I think the 120 credits is the credits you need to complete when you graduate. I am from Malaysia, how about you? Anyway, nice to meet you.

Nice to meet you too.
I am from india.
R u also goin there.
What is your credit progam.
Will they allow me change over to CSIE as when i filled in my application I filled mech. as first choice, but i think i have it in me more for computers.
Just waiting for scholarship information after which i will take my decision.
donutz , have u been offered any scholarship

@niksy_nik7: Yea I am going there too and I am taking BBA. If you want a change in your course, you better contact them ealier, I think you had, right? I am not sure wheter they will allow it, the decision is up to them. But if there are still places available I don’t think that will be a problem, and actualy I think Comp Science is not as competitive as Mech Eng also. I was offered 50% scholarship, which is hkd 40,000 per year.

just done with hku engineering interview ! It was so relaxing and friendly i felt like i was talking to my best buddies :D

Donutz, u mean comp sc is better or mech.
I am confused,
if anyone cud help me deciding between the two.

Couple years ago, I read that some mainland Chinese students admitted by CUHK would study at some designated colleges for 2 semesters first before going to CUHK.

@niksy_nik7: I personally think Mechanical Engineering is more competitive than Computer Science, means more students want to get into Mechanical Engineering (correct me if I am wrong). I cant’t tell exactly which is better because this is very subjective. Don’t go under the sway and be influenced by others. Just follow your heart and ask yourself, choose what you want most. Once you have chosen, never look back. Believe yourself. All the best.

Hello All!

I think its a no brainer you should choose HKUST for many reasons.

With all due respect HKU is the oldest university, and if you want to study medicine/law that is the school to be.

The future belongs to Science and Tech, hence HKUST is going to kick HKUs ass in the future. The government in Beijing does not care about HKU but supports various science projects at HKUST. Its as simple as this, the Chinese government views Tsinghua and HKUST as two best science universities in China. In my opinion HKUST has a lot more going for it beacuse it is based in HK.

Once IAS (Institute for Advance Studies) modeled after and in close cooperation with Princeton University, is fully up and running in 2 years, HKUST should edge HKU in the Times rankings. Its remarkable how quickly it has caught up with HKU given that its not even 20 years old. ONce this projects are complete and the new business school is built around the same time as IAS there will be no stopping them. HKUST business school is already top 20 in the world, and the executive MBA was ranked #1 two years ago while always being in the top 3 as per Financial Times.

HKUST business school is already world renowned.

Campus and facilities wise its a no brainer, recreaton and relaxation at HKUST is amazing.

Look, HKU might be old and prestigious but the fact is that its dying rather quickly. To me its a choice between the past and the future.

Looking at departamental rankings across the board, HKUST is #1 in Asia-Pacific everywhere, and top 20 or 30 worldwide.

HKUST is switching to a 4 yr BBA program completely modeled after the US. When you walk around the campus you see hundreds of foreign exchange students, you can not find that environment at HKU. the funniest thing is HKU alumni/students/administration refusing to accept reality :-)

@niksy_nik7: They may or may not let you change depending on available seats, but you’ll also have to give an interview since my cousin who got accepted into mech eng and later changed to elec eng had to give one. They ask you why you made the decision and other things like your ambition, reason for choosing hkust, etc.

@Jason.Cheng: Wow, thanks for than insightful post. The future looks bright for HKUST , Inshallah.

@Jason: Do you know if you go up and ask a random guy in hk, he/she will tell you that best university is HKU? If you go on and ask them what is the second best university, they will tell you that it is CUHK. If you don’t believe me, try doing it.

“HKUST business school is already world renowned.” I am going to have to disagree w/ that, at least not much ppl know about it in US. But not much ppl know about HKU in US too.

I do agree that UST is catching up quickly, but do you realize that it hasn’t gone up much progress in ranking during these few years. To me, it seems that it has reached its apex.

bba in UST has too much students!! That is one of things that I don’t like about it. So what if it is 4 yrs, by 2012 all the programs in HK will be 4 yrs anyway.

Can you explain to me how HKU is “dying quickly”? HKU attracts a LOT more hk top students than UST.

@Jason: Hi, Jason. May I ask what do HKUST cooperate with Princeton in? I thought BBA is 3 years, or I am mistaken?

@niksy_nik7: I got a couple of friends study for computer science. From what they said, they need to always do programming stuff. And, unless you really really like these kind of things, then you should choose computer science.

Shabab,
i never gave an interview for mech engineering and i was accepted due to my excellent grades, they sent me the student visa form and welcome to hkust thing.
So i dont think i will have to give an interview for changing my engineering.
When they gave me mech. without interview why wud they take an interview for comp sc.
Quincy kid,
Well i am quite interested in computers and looking to get into giant IT companies.
I had comp science as a subject in my std 12.
And I think the placement and pay are better in comp SC and that is why it is the highly sought after course

@SDG1 : relax… everyone has their own views. I am guessing its move up the ranking is getting lesser by year not because they are stagnant or reach their limit. Its just that at the top , the competition is brutal compared to the lower portion. So you can imagine an exponential graph for ranking climb each year. Its true for all universities.

@quincykid : its 3 years. They are changing it to 4 years in a few years time. It will not affect you.

@niksy : Interviews are rarely skipped for internationals. You are really good then! I will advise you not to choose
anything because of money or you will end up really depress if you don’t like it. Ask yourself what do you
like.

hey guys…i am an international student and am looking forward to a buisness degree from hkust or hku.both these universities are significant because they are ideally placed near the next big thing, china.i am currently doing my uk alevels and have taken 6 subjects which include world history and psychology.i wanted to know the difficulty level of admissions to hong kong for international students, especially those giving uk alevels. As sat scores are universally important i wanted to know what sat 1 and 2 scores would go down in your books as good enough for securing admission[for the economics or buisness programs].any response will be highly appreciated.

@dqbonafide:
Tell me sumthing wen u applied u got an offer and welcome thing and student visa form before the interview, or they told u to come for interview first and then emailed the things.I am waiting for their reply.
Well i am interested in Comp Sc coz i like it and also placements are better then mech.

@samad: Admission for international students at HKUST is somewhat more lenient than for local students - that is the case for many universities.

First, world-renowned universities like HKUST or HKU usually set aside a quota for international students. Besides, HKUST are admitting international applicants on a rolling basis within the specified duration. So, they need whoever comes first and are qualified enough to fill the space.

Second, the British GCE A Level and the SAT syllabi should give you an edge since other academic qualifications like the Singapore-Cambridge A Level and Hong Kong A Level can be more competitive with respect to the large number of local candidates and have more intensive content.

I submitted the SATs, A levels and IELTS since my SATs and A levels are fine except for the General Paper(something like the General Studies in the UK) which I obtained a D -.-
So, I needed to submit the IELTS as proof of English Proficiency that is nicer - an 8.0.

@nicky:thanks for the reply. Its good to hear some of the information that you told me.In which university are you currently present and would you mind giving some numerical figures because they would present a much more clear picture for me.[tell me your own].It could help me set a target for myself and push myself accordingly.I do expect 5 as in my AS level exams and i had striaght as in my o levels.Any rough guideline for sat 1 and 2 would also be important for me.I do ask too many questions…

@Nickyyyyyy
Sorry, did not follow this thread in a while.

Actually there are a lot students studying abroad from Sweden. When I talked to the management at UST they said that they’ve had Swedish students there before (and also some people from Norway).
I guess most people do not choose to do the full BBA in another country though. Kind of sucks paying tuition fee when the education is free in Sweden, and very cheap in other European countries! But I have been living in Shanghai for two years so I kind of feel that I want to stay in this part of the world.
