@dqbonafide:
thanks for your reply.
and I even got 93% in 10th std. Having so many certificates +good grades (90+%) since i started school, always amongst top 5 in my class.
The problem is they never asked me about how much i can afford.
They accepted without an interview, now they are saying they are reviewing it as i have requested them to change my engineering to comp.
Should I send them my report cards of 9 and 10 (coz it has all AAA and 90ies.)
well i think the reason can also be that i sent the supporting documents late.
I dont know where i lack, gotta ask them.
and also will there be a language problem, as english is my 2nd language.
I think all of the professors wont be chinese. But accent can be a problem.
what are you doing bba or beng.

pls reply people, this thread has become dead.

Niksy_nik, are you referring to the lecturers’ command of the English language? I think they should not be a problem since years of working in English-speaking environment during their PhD must have had improved their English. But I claim this on the basis that we assume they were not that well-versed in English to begin with.

However, with the hoi polloi, here is the statistics: “According to a 1996 by-census English is spoken by 3.1% of the population as an everyday language and by 34.9% of the population as a second language”.

if you’re going about them prestige-wise then HKU for med and or law related fields, HKUST for business and science related fields. In terms of overall country ranking, HKU. Specific subject rankings as per above. Yup.

err HKU beats SMU hands down. NUS>SMU>NTU … but I regard HKU and NUS way above other unis in HK and Sing (though HKUST and NTU shortly follow)

true that SMU is not that hard, you only need an SAT score of 1900 and “good” AP scores, etc. I don’t know, to me it’s “UPenn” wannabee and there’s a lott of local indo/malaysian/s-e-asian students lately…so if you want a more international standard I wouldn’t go for it (especially not for those who’ve spent a significant amount of time abroad)

anyway, does anyone know when do we pay the remaining of the school fees for the first semester? my parents need to sort out the financial matters.

wow, this thread sure is getting stale. hahaha…

well anyway, for hkust peeps, i just ask the staff there regarding the student package. they say it should arrive by the end of this week! =))

oh and ignore my previous post, i already asked her about it as well. hehehee

@nicky : BEng.

@fridayevening : I was waiting the whole month and ironically it is going to arrive on the end of june … I think the scholarship award will be given abit later after we start , so I am guessing we have to settle outstanding fees before that ourselves. Exact date I think its in the package that we are getting :D

good to hear the news that the student package will be arriving this week, i have been checking on my mail box every single week, haha

hi everyone! this is one awesome thread. until an hour ago, i felt so alone as i could never find a proper hkust forum to discuss the uni i’m going to with. i’m an international local student from indonesia, and i’ve taken the ib dip. hkust gave me and my friend an awesome scholarship deal - it’s like, i get diff types of scholarships if i get 33 and above in my ib dip score total. i think a lot of people were offered this. i got accepted in BBA, and i went for an interview for global business in december (though i got rejected). anyway, i’ve been to both hku and hkust. people in hku are all stuck up and arrogant! whereas in hkust, they were really nice and friendly. hku had this scary old building while ust was really nice, and they have an awesome view! but the dorms are a bit…eh…small and dingy. i will be looking for a place to stay near the university when i get to hk, because chances for a dorm are really slim for a local int’l student. looking for roomates! hoping to meet good friends here who are going to the same awesome uni as i am.

btw, is the student package going to be mailed to those who had only the conditional acceptance as well? or is it only going to be to those who are already accepted?

"ve been to both hku and hkust. people in hku are all stuck up and arrogant! whereas in hkust, they were really nice and friendly. hku had this scary old building while ust was really nice, and they have an awesome view! "

Please refrain from making broad generalisations here. “are all stuck up and arrogant” and “this scary old building” vs “was really nice, and they have an awesome view!” I certainly do not think so, as for this sort of generalisations, you should keep it to yourself and not write it here so as to be attacked by those who view HKU in a different way.

@Friday: I think this thread lacked the ‘intimacy’ that we used to share, and in my perspective, the quality of discussion has changed and so has the focus too.

This is driving me nuts! Has anyone found a bank or anything willing to provide a student loan for going to HKU??! How the F$%# did they manage to lose their FAFSA number???

Also, I tried to get membership in the facebook group, but no one accepted me…

Where are you from Meekle? I am currently offered Bachelor of architecture studies. Finding financial aid to study in HKU.

I’m from Minnesota, USA. Somehow HKU lost their FAFSA number and got their eligibility revoked for US federal aid. Dunno how you do that. CEDARS is being less than helpful. Oh well, I’m B.Eng here I come… I just gotta find the money. Let me know if you find a big pot of it anywhere.

hey guys i received my UST student package today. Just to update everyone.

anyone waiting for AP score?
just curious…
only a week away from now~

@meekle- im sorry! i never got a message that was asking for a group confirmation recently…can you please try again? im sent a group confirmation request eveytime someone requests to join, and dont recall getting one recently…ill check again tho.

@rubichino-yeaaa im waiting for a few scores and am starting to feel antsy about them…

@thegrand- hmmm yea thats true! maybe its just cause we all know where we are planning to go and this thread has gotten sooo big.

@michelleger- sorry, I’m an idiot, apparently I was just never notified when I’d been accepted into the group, which I normally am. But I am in, it was a stealth acceptance, apparently. Thanks!

hahah, no prob
