another applicant here to both HKUST and HKU. I did my HKUST phone interview (my first choice is BBA global business) way back in early Feb; so hopefully I could relieve some of your anxieties. The interview lasts about 30 minutes, and the basic aim of the interview is to get to know each other better so expect some general questions as you would at a normal interview. Just think for a moment before you answer each question and you should be fine, hope this helps.

Donutz: MBBS..then I guess you must be a hong kong yahn...if you don't mind telling us, what are your second and third choices at HKU (besides MBBS)? Are you a non jupas?

thanks 2mm, 30 min for a phone interview is quite long. So they didn't ask you any "tricky" questions? Btw, did they notify you for the decision yet?

surprisingly enough, the 30 minutes wasn't as long, I guess probably because we were having more like a friendly conversation rather than what people would normally do at a 'formal' interview. as for the tricky part...my interviewer asked me whether I was applying to HKU at the same time; but again, I'm sure they were just trying to test my integrity and honesty as they appear on my recommendation letters, it wasn't meant to really 'trick' me. So don't worry and just speak honestly, but don't sound too flattering lol. other than that think you should know some general ongoing topics, I suggest you start reading newspapers just to get yourself familiarized with. and nope, I'm still waiting for the decision. good luck to you all!

is there anyone on this forum who's not a hong konger by family, blood, relations, whatsoever (aka international students) that's applying to HKU and HKUST?

they actually ask you about current events.....? Well I am somewhat aware of what is happening recently, so I am not too worried. It's good to hear that it's friendly-oriented interview. I think IGBM is really hard in HKUST, if not the most competitive program. Anyways, good luck!

Yeah, it's good to hear that the interview was rather friendly. My friend had an interview with a school in the UK, and she told me how scary the people were so I was freaking out haha

Anyways, I'm an international student and applied for both HKU and HKUST! 2mm are you international also?

o sweeeeeet. I'm also an international applicant. so I guess I found the right people, I've been secretly reading posts written by local non jupas hong konger ppl on uwants and such forums and yeah sure they've been a lot of help..............not.

Has any of you 'internationals' received a formal invitation for an interview from HKU yet? I know this may vary depending on the faculty, but it's running towards mid March and I still haven't heard anything besides a confirmation & info email that seems legitly 'not so personal' from an admission officer in Jan. (I submitted my apps as soon as the online system opened in november, just so you know)

btw am I the only one who's been wondering why the admission standards are so low? no joke, 1650/2400 on SAT I is ridiculous... just wanna know what you guys think on this issue. lmao

2mm, forums such as uwants and discuss are not that helpful for international students. And about the standard, 1650 is definitely low, and I doubt anyone with that range got it. I don't know for sure but I think it is "supposed" to be 1900+.

@2mm- im an international as well(US), no family from HK, tho some do hail from China. i have no connections in HK rite now. And with the entry req's, i know what you mean, but those standards probably need to be a bit low because there are always exceptions. and besides, for internationals, HKU is heavily recruiting, they sent out a press release the other day that within the next decade they want 20% of their undergrad student body to be international.

guys, i just received notification that ill be offered conditional acceptance! Basically, as long as I meet the entry req's befor august, like get my high school diploma, grades passing and SAT/AP exams, i can go. I think it is strange that they told me so early, but it might be because of my department choice, which is a bachelor of science. also since i contacted them thru email and stuff, the int.student coordinator may have liaisoned with the admissions commitee to get my app looked over. seems like most internationals are trying to get into business. do you guys think their bachelor of science program is good? just curious, i seem to only hear about business and the med program.

@ysbera: uhh to be honest I really have no clue, so that's something I can't answer you. but I'll try to keep myself updated, I'm supposed to get my decision sometime next week or the week after. anyway good luck on your interview!

@michelleger: congratulations! wow that must be a huge relief for you. was faculty of science your 1st choice?

@ysbera: haha, you know, after my interview was wrapping up, i mustered up the courage to ask my interviewer whether he thought i had a chance! he was very nice and said he thought i had a good chance.

@2mm- yes it was my 1st choice, none of my 2nd/3rd choices contacted me at all. do you think their science faculty is good? i am so unbelievably relieved, i think going to HKU will be the best part of my life so far, my happiest accomplishment =D thing is, hkust hasnt given me any hint of contact yet, and i have to reply to this acceptance by march 31st. so ill have to respond right away once i get my admissions packet. but i am still so happy with hku!

Hey michelleger, congrats on the news this is xandrea, when i was reading through the posts i noticed that a lot of people havent had interviews yet. I chatted with a student at HKU in Year 1 business and she said that she never got an interview. So maybe because of the faculty,or program I don't think everyone will get interviewed. But best of luck to everyone.

@Michelle Congrats! The feeling of getting into your first choice university must be amazing!!!
My friend got into HKUST for computer science a few days ago and they gave him 15 days to reply. He is asking his counselor to email HKUST and push back the deadline.

@michelleger: CONGRATS! So I guess you'll be going to HKU then? you must be so excited right now =) I'm sort of in an opposite situation from yours haha. I haven't heard anything from HKU at all . Hopefully my interview with HKUST goes well though! anyways, congrats again!

@Donutz: I'm not having a telephone interview with them..if there's any difference. Mine is scheduled on March 26th at the campus so I'll be off to HK in about two weeks! =) good luck on your interview!!
