I just got my letter today! Has anyone else gotten theirs or is it only for ED people?

I didn't realize it was going to be on weekdays though, missing school.

The expenses paid thing is amazing, although I wonder if they would consider New York "beyond reasonable driving distance" because I don't think my dad would take three days off work to drive me so it would be much nicer if they would fly me in.

I can't wait, spending three days in Lexington, all expenses paid, at a freshman dorm.

seeing as how door to door (from suffolk county) it's about 8 hours for me...well, it can be done but few people find it enjoyable. ;) so the flight should be an option.

I think that NYC is probably not "reasonable driving distance" - really, it would take about 7 hours, no traffic. That's far too much for someone to drive.

That's awesome! I am not a finalist :-(. I really wish I had done better on my SAT's now. Well especially SATII's... I am retaking them tomorrow morning but it's too late. Argh!

Hey, I'm so sorry for not posting. My computer has been flippin' out for days. That's the problem with Windows 98, I suppose.

I'm sad to hear that some of us didn't get chosen, but when you think about it, only 100 people are. I think around 2000 people apply each year (not sure how many fill out the GWHS app), so it's certainly no slap in the face to not be chosen.

I'm so excited, I got my letter after school on Friday. (Which is when my computer stopped working). I haven't told my parents yet, it feels weird for some reason. I'm thinking about claiming unreasonable driving distance. It's 6.5 hours by car (if the beltway is nice that day), but my parents can't take me, so I'd have to take a bus. Registration is midday, and buses take at least an extra 1/3rd of the time, so I'd have to leave at a strange hour I'm sure. I'll see what happens.

The alumni association in my area have a scholarship that gets renewed each time the student currently holding it graduates (once every four years), and it just happens to be the year I start. I'm definitely feeling positive about attending W&L lately. :)

Williwonka - congrats to you and good luck - the trip to Lexington will be awesome for you - maybe it will reaffirm things for you to go there - kuddos to you.

willywonka, I'm claiming 7 hours to be beyond reasonable driving distance.

Also, if you're taking a bus, the nearest bus station is Buena Vista, a couple of miles away down route 60 (although all downhill), not very reasonable walking distance.

Congrats, you guys! Sadly, I wasn't chosen as a finalist (but then, apparently 800-something people applied for the scholarship.)
Too bad I won't be seeing you all...but best of luck anyway! You have a great chance!

Hey kareelily, welcome to the club :-)! Yeha, about 900 people applied. I feel sorry that you didn't get the scholarship, but at the same time it gives me relief to know that someone who seems to be more qualified than I am did not get selected. I suppose it is extremely subjective, just like the entire college admissions process. I'm sure you'll get in RD, though, I wouldn't worry about it.

The funny thing about "reasonable driving distance" is that I don't think they really care. I called Martin Travel today to just ask if I was expected to fly or drive, and when I said where I lived, the woman immediately started looking up flights for me. I'm very pleased.

Oh, Dima (and any other finalists who happen upon the W&L board), what classes did you choose to sit in on, and what activities did you choose to "learn more about"? I was surprised with the variety of classes going on that day..it was really hard narrowing it down. (I was also surprised that there are like 8 classes about Japan). I finally chose 20th Century Philosophy, Intro al Analisis Literario, and Art of Japan. I was also interested in Romantic Music, any basic language course, Art since 1945, Seminar on Temperate Forests, Japanese Literature in Translation.

For activities, I went with Trivia/Quiz Bowl team, Language Honor Society, and Tour Guide. (I know, I'm really cool). I was thinking of doing a sport, but I wasn't sure what kind of interest level is required for whatever we're choosing.

Yeah, I got rejected (for the GWH) and I got a letter. You should get it soon; I got mine on Friday afternoon. Even people from California got theirs on Friday... yours might be lost in the mail or something.

just what i need to calm my nerves...lol. thanks for the quick response, though; i was beginning to think that they send out all the acceptance letters then, if we don't get it, we just assume that we were rejected, which I didn't want to make myself unnecessarily believe

Willy and Dima, congrats! DD will miss you at Dartmouth Willy, but that scholarship sounds like a great opportunity, and W&L has been tops for you for so long.
