Rakem: W&L did NOT get one inch of snow. That was more like one millimeter. I think my freezer produces more snow than the "storm" that came through.

But yes - all of the Southerners flip when they see snow - us hardy northern types don't even see the need to slow down when driving unless there's at least six inches on the ground.

It gets really cold at night, and your car will be covered with frost in the a.m. It won't be substantially warmer than Pa.

I can't believe you don't own a suit jacket!

I have three suits, two newer Italian ones and an older Austrian one. Then again, that's only because I have a lot of opportunities to wear them.

Anyway, how formal would the interviews be? I was thinking more dress shirt and dress pants but once you brink a suit jacket into it, it's on!

Haha, I don't know how formal to dress, I don't even own a suit jacket! Actually, I do have one-- it's awesome and everything, but it's corduroy, and I think that if the interviews are formal enough for a suit jacket, they're formal enough for it to not be corduroy.

The on-campus interview was typical for a college. I called, and was told that there is no requirement (jacket, tie, etc.), but to dress comfortably and nicely. I wore a plain colored polo shirt, black dress pants and dress shoes, and I didn't feel self-conscious. However, these aren't regular on-campus interviews, and the newest letter from W&L does specify that we should bring formal clothing apart from our casual clothes, which almost seems like a way of saying "dress real nicely." Who knows?

I started my second term of the year today and it really made me look forward to W&L when in my government class (which I thought would be really enjoyable), there are 34 people, thus a small chance for participation, and a lot of "pinko commie radicals" that make my views (moderate to liberal Democrat) look conservative. Also, when I realized that if I wanted to transfer out of the class, I would have to wait three hours to get a program change. Add to that the one hour commute to school via NYC subway and I really want out.

W&L really needs to work on its image though. When I mentioned it to my acting teacher, she said she couldn't picture me at such a conservative school and that it's practically a training ground for Klansmen. Things that are obviously not true but stereotypes like this do exist and that's why no one from my school ever applies to W&L.

Dima - best to look at those types of comments as those of the uneducated - uninformed and very closed minded!!! and the philosophies of W&L as they relate to its image - well....... uuummmmm it is one of the oldest schools in our nation - one of the best endowed schools in this country - shares national recognition along with many other wonderful schools - and is by far - out of the realm of being Klansman oriented in any way, shape or form - and I am sure you know that. Your teachers comments are actually way off base, inappropriate and obviously this person has no real clue at all. So - be like a duck - let it roll right off your back. Pack your bags and enjoy W&L to the max!!!!

Consider yourself lucky - others at your school have no clue what they could be missing by not even giving W&L a nod - but you will luck out - take that and run with it and get the most and best out of your experience there. It always has been and is a real jewel.

UUGGH it sounds like that class you have is a real whooper - good luck to you.

I like that saying JeepMOM.

By the way, making a detour to Lexington when I visit D.C. to see W&L. I'm sick of hearing misconceptions for narrowminded people (which Dima referred to) and want to go to the campus myself.

Eiffleguy - it is great that you will at least get to experience W&L's campus - so it sounds as tho you have convinced your parents that it is worth consideration after what the Princeton Review bashed about it then. It will be interesting to hear your personal review of your visit - so......... I hope you let us all know of your your impressions and such. BTW - when is this trip planned for??? soon???

My son will be heading there sometime this spring for alum weekend - hasn't missed a one - has a blast every year - he and all his frat bros - what a great crew they are. He would love to return to Lexington on a permenant basis - and maybe someday he will.

UUrrrggg...Klansmen? :P
Thanks in large part to a couple of my absolutely wonderful/amazing/dedicated floormates, I have a feeling we're going to be a lot more welcoming to minorities in the years to come. :) It's a shame that teacher didn't know what he/she was talking about. This school may be a training ground for a lot of things (grad school, alcoholism) but klansmen isn't one of them. ;)

No matter to what level I believe the stereotypes about W&L (which changes daily, but has never exceeded anything above nervous doubt), I get the impression that this is true. Whatever small problems there may or may not be, the correct amount of annual change (while not ignoring tradition) is going on. It's something I really want to be a part of.
