Bowler- Congratulations. My son is also on the school’s first ever bowling team. Not a very good team, but he had a lot of fun.
FC - Well as far as stats are concerned:
Not so easy to admit his stats are not so great. Yes his brother is a sophmore at UF. He didnt even apply to Tulane. His overall stats were better. He loves UF, not too sure UF loves him. Bottom line it has been kinda tough, well tougher than he thought it was going to be. So I have learned to let go, sort of.
Next kid.

So like I said at this point the counselor had said it would be sent by today. I don’t think that happened, because in todays email it says this week. By the time I go to the principal ( who is new this year and I don’t exactly love) and make a stink, I just keep thinking this will backfire on me. I usually don’t mettle to that extreme because of fear of possible repercussions that then my son would give me grief about.
But we visited Tulane and my son loved it. He likes UF but its BIG and he liked the smaller Tulane feel. Also he is very borderline for UF so this is why he looked elsewhere, but Tulane is also a reach. That is why he applied SCEA.
Anyway thank you for your quick response and suggestions. Tonight I will talk it over with my son.

Actually those stats are pretty good! I think people get a skewed perspective because the students here on CC are upper tier (as opposed to “upper their” in my other post. I really need to turn off the autocorrect on that iPad). Your son sounds like a very fine student, and the EC’s are very solid, with sports and community service, and the club office. I actually like his chances at Tulane, especially since unlike UF, Tulane is underrepresented when it comes to Hispanic students. That will give him a small push up I think.

So as much as I dislike counselors being slow to get these things done, I am changing my mind and thinking you should just let it go, especially if it gets out this week as opposed to Monday, which would of course be really last minute. And when I say let it go, I mean stay on the counselor a bit, but I wouldn’t elevate it. As you say, probably too late anyway.

Good to hear your S1 is enjoying UF. It can be tough to balance the extreme social life there with the academics, but of course that is true at Tulane as well. Just that at the smaller schools like Tulane, there is a better chance of a prof noticing if someone is struggling. There certainly is quite a difference in size!

I have had the amazing opportunity to be on a very good bowling team since my freshman year (only a club team but that’s all they have in Arizona). Tulane’s women’s team is new and is not the best team. Nevertheless, I hope I get a chance to help them improve. It’s too bad that only a couple schools offer division I bowling for men. Good luck to your son with Tulane and whatever decision he makes.

Fallenchemist, ( or anyone else that knows) I am so happy for everyone that is getting in but my is DD is having a melt down. Her stats are right in there and she did SCEA but, a boy from her school just got accepted today and she goes to a small private school ( 75 students). There are 7 students in her class that applied. From what you have seen, do they only take a certain number of applicants from each school?

Absolutely not. I was told point blank by several people from admissions that Tulane does not do this. It is so unlikely that more than one or two of those seven would go, it would be foolish for Tulane to even try and guess which ones would most probably attend. Sometimes you see 5, 6 or 7 people from one high school attend Tulane, (my old public high school in St. Louis area occasionally does, and graduating classes are only about 230 or so with 99% going on to college), but then about 15-20 or more apply. Tulane just has a great rep in certain schools. Other years as many apply and get accepted and only 1 or 2 end up at Tulane. It varies so much.

I know it is so hard for your daughter. If her app is complete and shows SCEA (does Gibson show that?), then she will hear very soon I am sure. But didn’t she just get her app in Nov.1? If I am right about that, then she is being unrealistic. I am positive the boy that got accepted got his in at least a couple of weeks ago. It really does take a couple of weeks to get everything in order. There are very occasional exceptions, but forget about those. They rarely pertain to these situations. So if her melt down is about Tulane being popular at your school, no worries. She is competing solely against Tulane’s general standards and the complete applicant pool, not the kids at her school.

Thank you fallenchemist. Her status isn’t even complete yet. She was just worried that since someone else got in, her chances would decrease. Her GC is great but is of the mindset that it doesn’t matter when you apply as long as it’s before the deadline. My DD struggled with applying EA or SCEA. Tulane is her first choice by far but by applying SCEA, she wasn’t able to apply EA to some of her other schools. She kept changing her mind until the final date of the EA decision. Whew! major relief. Now we can go back to just patiently waiting. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer, it alleviated (half) her stress! I don’t know why parents say smaller colleges will only take a few a students from schools.

So here’s my good news today… Tulane acceptance arrived via regular mail… with Founder’s Scholarship! $22K per year. I am completely blown away. Time to book a trip to New Orleans so DS can visit.

Junior year was super hard and stressful, but DS is reaping the benefits now. Very proud of him!

(For those keeping track, Gibson status was updated to CONGRATS on Thursday and letter arrived in the mail today.)

Bowler;

I wanted to pass on my congratulations. I am very happy it worked out for you.

Good luck to the rest of the applicants awaiting word from Tulane.

Oliver I really do feel for your daughter. Waiting can be extremely stressful and I truly hope she hears a decision soon.

Linymom, congrats on the scholarship!

Thanks twoby. I appreciate everyone on here that has had any input or insight.

My son got a 27,000 Presidential Scholarship! Woo hoo! Good luck to everyone. So happy and would be thrilled to be part of the Tulane Family!

I’m starting to get worried that I haven’t received a decision yet. I sent in my app September 15th and my application has been marked as complete since the middle of October (minus a few Gibson glitches). I have good stats, completed the Why Tulane essay and attended a Tulane Comes to You event last year. Am I obsessing over nothing?

Congratulations!

oliver17 - I think that is true for some schools that tend to be a bit more regional in their draw. So my guess is that once people saw that was true for some of those schools, they just assumed that all schools had the same policy. But with schools that draw very well nationally and internationally and are of at least decent size (>1000 students in each freshman class), there is little danger that the “diversity” of the class will be diluted if 5 or 6 from one high school all attend. In Tulane’s position in particular, where it competes against Vandy, Duke, WUSTL, Miami, etc as well as acting as an alternative choice for many that are applying to Ivies and similar schools, some of whom will get into those schools and choose them instead, they know that it is unlikely that all or even a majority of the applicants from a given school will end up there.

Not sure how well I said that, but hopefully I got the idea across. Bottom line, I am glad she is stressing less because that, at least, is one thing she shouldn’t give another thought to. I am glad she applied SCEA, that will help her stand out from all applicants. Really sends the message that she wants Tulane.

Callie- D2 submitted September 4 and was accepted 10/29. So it is way too early to panic. And we received great news today–Distinguished Scholar–$25k/yr. Feeling so fortunate and happy. Thanks LINYMOM and Fallenchemist for the support as I waited for the mailman!

Congrats to Bowler, Shellyg, twoby, LINY …sorry if I am missing someone…

I sent my SCEA app in August 18 and it has been showing complete since Gibson went live. I am still yet to hear any kind of decision. I am definitely starting to get nervous…I feel a meltdown coming on. Tulane has been my first choice for so long, I can’t imagine not going there in the fall. But I know we all end up where we’re supposed to. I just have has thought and hoped I’d be at Tulane. Still praying for good news though.

callie - Your stats are strong, so I see no reason you should not have heard yet. I would call or write your personal admissions counselor and ask if they have everything they need or if there are any questions you can answer for them because you are very interested in Tulane. That should prompt a review.

You are obviously applying to and interested in some top schools. Just out of curiosity, where does Tulane fall in your pecking order? What is going to drive your decision in the end?

Cheer - same for you, I would e-mail your counselor. Not to say “Hey, what’s taking so long??” but just to check and make sure everything is on track. Communication is always a good thing as long as it isn’t overdone. The only difference in your case, Cheer, is that your SAT is on the low side for Tulane. Not to add to your stress or anything, but that is just a fact, if I read your previous posts correctly. So they may be deferring a decision for you either towards the end of the EA cycle or possibly even into the RD pool. Hard to tell. Sorry, I know that will make you stress even more but I know you want honest opinions.

Thanks fallenchemist, I’ll be sure to do so! I am really interested in Tulane, as it fits my major criteria (more than 2500 students and in or near a big city) and just seems like a great school. It is in my top 5, but it would drop down several spots if I didn’t receive substantial merit aid. My top four are UCLA, Columbia, Northwestern and Pomona, with UCLA being the clear favorite. I have visited all of my schools except Tulane (I’m waiting to see if I’m accepted) so I would of course visit before making any decisions. As of now, however, I’ll probably go to UCLA if I get in, but there’s a lot of time between now and May 1st for me to change my mind!

Vitrac, Thanks for your message. I tried to PM you back but I don’t have enough posts. ( Weird that it won’t let you respond to a private message.) It’s reassuring that you and FC agree. I feel so much better thanks to both of you.

Thanks for the advice fallenchemist. I appreciate your honesty. I do understand my SAT is low. But I hoped that my strong essays, writing portfolio, sports recruitment, work in NOLA and interest would be enough to just tip me over the edge. I also just sent in my quarter grades, and I know my rep got them.

Whatever happens I suppose. I am on pins and needles however and if I am not admitted, I’d like to begin making other plans. In all honesty I’m beginning to not have a good feeling about it. So perhaps I will begin to look elsewhere(without giving up all hope though of course) while I am awaiting my decision.

Thank you again fallenchemist.
