I got a likely letter

ahhhh i hate you all...in as nice a way as possible!

Hmm I didn't get the financial aid email... bleh. Maybe I'll call them. Or maybe it's just because I sent in my 05 tax forms like 2 days ago. What exactly did the email say?

tchaikovsky- Congrats to you. I hope that this has relieved some of your stress .

Congrats Casa

Bulb- congrats to your daughter

Haha, congrats hoops and all others,
I too got a likely letter today, I am quite excited because Dartmouth's my first choice. I will be attending next year (assuming they are good on their promise) Did they send the "Dimensions orientation thing" letter with the likely? Hopefully see some of you guys up there. Is this everybodies #1 choice? Well im just extatic, never thought I had a chance at one. Well congrats everyone and good luck to those sdtill waiting. (tchiakovsky, youll get in)

sorry tchiakovsky, you did get in, congrats

thanks sybbie719! Sorry if I came across stressed

hahah KBBETTS ;). Yeah, congrats to you too!

Which means that the combined number of ED admits and "likelies" was roughly equal to the size of the freshman class!

The goal, quite obviously, is to do something to boost the RD yield rate, which hovered slightly over 40% last year.

how many likelys sent out in first wave

Congrats ppl! Enjoy and now u all dont need to be tensed regarding ur admission decision ;)

I wonder why only Cornell, Yale, and Dartmouth send out likely letters.

tchaikovsky- No problem, I am just happy for you now that you can breath that collective sigh of releif because the admissions process in and of itself seems to get crazier year after year.

Kbbetts,

first of all congrats on your likely lettter (don't worry you'll get the big envelope come april).

Regarding dimensions, if you did not get an invitation to dimensions, don't worry about it because if you really want to attend dimensions, and you can.

If the school invites you to Dimensions (their admitted student days), there is a name and a person on the letter for you to contact to make arrangements to attend.

However, if your letter does not have an invitation to Dimensions (this includes ED students who usually do not get an invitation to dimensions), don't worry about it because Dimensions is the kind of event that even if you don't get an official invitation as a "admitted student" you will still be welcomed once you get there.

You pay your own way to Hanover. If you have a friend, relative or know student attending Dartmouth, just ask them if they can put you up for the days during dimensions and join in the festivities.

Contact admissions let them know that you are coming and they'll feed you. Hopefully one of the "ED crashers" from last year will chime in to let you know how this part works.

thanks sybbie719
I like to read all your posts.
I also saved a lot of useful information from your posts.
I have a question for you.
Can parent go with kid to join that "Dimensions event"?
Dartmouth is the first choice of my D so we really want to go with her.
Thank you.

Parents are not "invited" to dimensions and there probably s not foing to be any events or things set up for them, however many do come up to Hanover traveling with or driving their kids and usually stay in a hotel.

The activities are set up and geared toward prospective freshmen. They are hosted with current freshmen and stay in the dorms. They get to attend classes, there are discussion groups, cook-outs and a few other things.

It is really an opportunity for students to meet and bond with other prospective freshmen who are also considering Dartmouth (my daughter is still very good friends with students she met at dimensions as they all committed to coming to Dartmouth together ) as well as current students. Think about it, they are going to be there 4 years with out you.

If you are driving her up for dimensions, and are looking for the opportunity to see Hanover, then do that as I know some parents did bring their kids to Hanover adn found something to do (they went on toured the campus, got the talk track from Dartmouth etc.

If you decide just to drive up and stay for the 3 days, there are a number of hotels that are very reasonable right in white river junction (less than a 10 minute -2 exit drive from the college). check through expedia as you can always get a good rate from them.

here is a link on discussions about hotels:

fwiw: Dimensions is April 20-22

My s's girlfriend got one today from Dartmouth. I don't know her exact stats, but she has very high SAT's, high class rank (competitve public hs) and some great EC's.

Dartmouth sent over 600 "likelies" last year.

Which means that the combined number of ED admits and "likelies" was roughly equal to the size of the freshman class!

quoted from above comment

so does that mean for dartmouth if you dun get a likely letter basically means you wont get in in april??

I got a likely letter today! yay...

The first round of likely letters in the fall go out to recruited athletes (who then apply ED and are admitted.

Approx. 500 likely letters are sent out during the RD round thoughout february/march. Keep in mind that overall more than 2,000 students (including ED) will be admitted to Dartmouth to yeild a class of about 1075.

The majority of the RD students **will not ** get a likely letter. I know that all this can seem really tense right now but hang in there.

Congrats DJimaeW87 !!

do only cornell, dartmouth, and yale send out likely letters??????

A Wink and a Nod

Colleges are courting their best students earlier in an effort to win their affections. Here are some of the techniques they're using.

Dartmouth College "Likely" letter
Sent before the Ivy League's agreed-upon mailing date for acceptance letters. Dartmouth says the letters are not a violation because they only hint at admission rather than grant it. "We do these letters to try to introduce some 'humanity' into the pressured admissions process," says dean of admissions and financial aid Karl Furstenberg.

Grinnell College "Wink" letter
Not much winking and more of a straight admission. Letter reads: "I am both pleased and excited to send you this early notification of your acceptance to
Grinnell College."

Clark University "Love" letter
A note, often handwritten, saying "how much the admissions office enjoyed reading the application or that we appreciated the effort the student made to present a thoughtful essay," says dean of admissions Harold Wingood.

Williams College "Early write"
A committee meets every week for several weeks in January and February to "really look for the superstars," says Richard Nesbitt, director of admissions. The result: About 200 students every year receive an admittance letter two months before the rest of the pack.

Colorado College "Early notification"
School admits about 10% of all "regular" admissions candidates about three weeks early.

Smith College Early scholarship notice
"The fact that Smith thinks these students are special is conveyed to them," says director of admissions Audrey Smith. The message is reinforced with $2,500 a year in scholarship money and a paid position as a campus researcher.

Wellesley has an Early Evaluation option that results in a Likely, Possible, or Unlikely letter. Recipients of the Likely get in. The Unlikelies don't. The Possibles have about a 1 in 6 shot.
