She’s sick as a dog. We went to Urgent Care yesterday-- her tonsils are inflamed, one ear is infected; she’s a mess. She’s on an antibiotic and prednisone (since she’s allergic to penicillin)
We had hoped that maybe she would feel well enough to sleep in the car this morning, get through the tour, then crash in the motel, but she just feels too miserable.
Only a roadbump–she’s pretty disappointed but just needs to be in bed.
I would just like to add that I really feel for today’s teen girls. There is a tremendous amount of social pressure on them and the thread of suicide as a discussion and reality is common in their world. Being a teen girl is hard enough without having to manage the snapchat, Instagram and social media posts that one must deal with these days.
You mentioned SUNY schools…I will also share that we toured Marist looking other programs but wow…did they have a great fashion merchandising program. It is also test optional. It might be a fit for your DD. Yes, back off but maybe help her get a few four year applications in because by June, she may be more than ready to go away to college. It also might be just what she needs - to get away from high school. At least in our area, CC and a few local 4 years can just be continuations of high school because so many local kids attend.
She has her annual physical next week. If she isn’t feeling any better I’ll make sure to mention it to the doctor.
And I’m very familiar with Marist-- lots of our graduates go there! But they’re simply out of our league financially. And her grades aren’t strong enough to make any realistic merit aide a possibility. So they’re not even on the table.
And she was really disappointed this morning to have to cancel-- I’m calling that a good thing! We’ll try to reschedule before school starts. If not, we’ll do a weekend in the fall or Columbus Day.
The plan was to leave at 5 am. For those of you not from Long Island: there are a limited number of ways off this island. And this summer has been dubbed " The Summer of Hell" because of the work being done to Penn STation in NYC and the resulting ripples to all commuters. If we had hoped to make the 4 hour drive upstate in time for an 11:15 tour, I wanted us to be on the road by 5:15.)
I woke her up at 4:45, we spoke for a few minutes, and I told her to go back to sleep.
IT’s now 12:30 pm, and she’s still asleep. While she could easily have slept through the 6 hour drive, she would have needed to be awake an hour and a half ago.
I hope that by this time, your D is completely recovered. If your D is looking at event planning, she should consider SUNY Plattsburgh, which has an excellent Hospitality program. My D and one son attended there (we are on the North Shore). Neither majored in that subject but a couple of D’s friends did and both have good jobs now.
Would there be any value in having an appointment with your daughter and her therapist to discuss the level of involvement that she needs/desires from you, and what you are willing to do/expecting from her? That way all expectations and possible consequences would be clear.
@bjkmom You definitely made the right decision in canceling her visits. Even if she had been well enough to go but still sick feeling miserable throughout the tour would definitely have caused a negative view of the schools. Hope she is feeling better. It will all work out.
