I'm in Sixth college, and I was wondering whether or not it would be a good idea to bring a fridge for my triple. What about a tv? I can't imagine wanting to go out to the living room area of the dorm to argue over channels every single time I want to bring a tv, but I don't want to bring one in the first place if there's not going to be enough room.

Yes to both! Having the TV on sometimes is a great stress reliever for me. Oh, and don’t forget a microwave. That was CRUCIAL. It’s nice to heat up your lukewarm dining hall food.

TV can be nice, but if you’re technologically savvy or have a good buddy that is, you may do well to set up your computer as a TV and get yourself a bigger monitor. It’s provides benefits for both TV and computer usage. You may also do both at the same time if you have dual monitors. Of course if you want a 40"+ screen than you’re probably better off getting a dedicated tv…I think my eyes and neck would tire of swiveling to see all of a 40"+ screen.

I had two fridges and a microwave in my room.
ChristianWu… stop giving out inaccurate advice (like saying that OVT is buffet-style), especially since you haven’t even started school yet.

i think what he meant was that only one fridge would easily fit inside a typical dorm room. It’s possible but I really don’t know how I would have fit another fridge in my dorm last year

ManofFaith is right though, this isn’t the first time incorrect advice has been given. Sorry. not trying to be the police here but it’s true.

The ERC dorms do not provide microwaves. The kitchens basically only have a sink and a stove. I cannot speak for the other colleges but I am fairly certain they also don’t provide microwaves.

Refrigerators are somewhat useless in my opinion. There is no way to cook in many res halls, and the meal plan they force on students is usually far more than adequate.

I suspect both fridges and microwaves will feel pretty useful late at night when you want a study snack and don’t want to drag yourself accorss campus to whatever meal plan place is still open. Or for those mornings when you would rather sleep in and grab a quick breakfast in the room before dashing to class instead of foraging for food along the way.

a fridge is NOT worth bringing. i have seen far too many students struggling to move it out or look endlessly for places to store it at the end of the school year.

for snacks, i would recommend canned soups that can be microwaved.

Is there any reason you’d think a computer monitor would be more likely to be stolen than a television?

You can get a 28" computer monitor for <$300. Maybe I’m showing my age, but that’s plenty big for a television in any dorm-sized room. That monitor paired with a 2+1 Logitech z2300 speakers would be plenty big and loud enough for a dorm room without costing a lot of $$.

I’m going to say that having a 46" TV in my dorm’s suite was marvelous and a great way to chill out with a bunch of people. There’s only so many people you can fit in your dorm room.
