Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Scholarship 2014-2015

@kpcosmic, I was thinking the same thing. I hope that it isn’t late April too because it doesn’t give us much time to decide before the May 1st deposit. Between this and the other schools that I am waiting to hear from, it’s killing me. Three of the schools I applied to don’t start giving out decisions until April 1st and hand them out all the way until June. I think mid-April probably makes more sense than late April if you add the extra two weeks that the application was open to the original date we were suppose to hear something which was late March so two weeks from late March is Mid-April. Hopefully at the latest it’s Mid-April. I am hoping that we hear something before April 10th because I am going to visit the school I want to attend and I think I have to sign a lease that day if I want to get an apartment in off-campus student housing.

For what it’s worth last year JKCF published a press release April 13th (first Monday of the week) with list of winners. That means winners were notified before hand. I can’t see it taking longer then April 14th.

This delay is something I didn’t want to be right about :frowning: They can estimate all they want, but with the scholarship open to anyone and it being advertised from college sites all the way up to USA Today, I truly believe they weren’t prepared for the number of applicants. Hopefully, the decision will come soon so the lot of us aren’t stuck in limbo and can plan accordingly for the future.

I called 855-509-5253 and was told the same thing, that they just heard that the applications are still under review, and we will find out mid-April.

Just got an email back from Todd. He said everyone, including those who won’t win the scholarship will hear something mid-April. So if they are letting the scholars know first, scholars might start to hear something the 5th-11th (my guess. not what the foundation said). If I turn out to be a scholar and since they probably will notifying people next week or not to long after, it would be kind of cool if I find out on my birthday.

They have not updated or change the notification date on the FAQs for the transfer scholarship, so I am not sure if they are delaying anything, may be non of us on this platform won.

@georgemk, they probably won’t change it. I think from what the guy from the foundation said that the people from the foundation was just notified today that results wouldn’t be coming out until mid-April.

This is copied from the email I got:
There has been a change in the notification date.

Notifications for the Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship will now be sent out in mid – April of 2015, to everyone who has applied.

The scholars will be notified directly by the Foundation by phone.

The non-winners will be notified by email.

Thanks @Adorse26, we just have to keep waiting I guess

even though i feel like my chances at this getting this fellowship are bleak (i am unenviably average), i have all of this nervous feeling… waking up in the middle of the night thinking “did i explain this fairly” or “was i too political” or “was my resume inaccurate”? did i really work at lowe’s and spend six months doing nothing, while my cohorts were leading charity organizations and writing smart editorials for LGTBQ magazines? i never took disadvantaged children canoeing or assembled bicycles for refugees or planted a community garden or any of that. i ran with the ACLU for a stint and felt choked and couldn’t understand how i could promote free speech without ever really saying anything. i feel like my application wasn’t impressive because i’m a commitment phobe and probably seemed flighty and self-indulgent.

i want to win this. or i want my application to look so badly that it makes somebody else’s application look better by comparison. good luck good luck good luck.

@optimisticky You sound like a very interesting person haha, I hope we both get it just so I can meet you at the scholars convention in Virginia! lol

@optimisticky, I think it just matters that we each have our own story. I haven’t volunteered that much because I was diagnosed with a bleeding condition a few years ago which can leave me tired and unable to do a lot of things most of my fellow students are able to do. I am just hoping my story of overcoming things will help. In a few years time, I went through depression which lasted from when I was about ten years old to about seventeen, dropped out of high school, my house burnt down, my dad died after being disabled for twenty years, my mom got in a car accident so she had to file for disability since she can no longer do her old job, got my G.E.D., and decided to attend college because I always knew I wanted to be a fashion designer and I knew college would take me there. Each person story is different, you probably have something that you can say about you that I can’t say. For example, I only have a 3.7 GPA and only just started volunteering again after being sick. I know a lot people who are applying have a higher GPA. I am also am part of a few clubs, but I don’t feel like I am active member of any of them. You working can probably say that you have real life experience that some of us might not have which I can’t say I have worked a whole lot.

So to be clear, there hasn’t been any news of someone winning the transfer scholarship yet? I read a few instances where people have won, but I think that was for freshman, not for transfers.

@optimisticky‌ I felt the same way when I started reading other people’s stats. I don’t have any leadership roles or much volunteering time. Between working a full time job, a part time job on the weekends and a 3 hour daily commute with a 4.0 gpa… There isn’t much time for much more. I also have a boyfriend of 5 years who has 3 kids and I spend any free time I have with them. I don’t think I have a shot!

@cmbradley2015, some of us contacted the foundation today and we found out that as of today the notification date has changed which now is mid-April.

@FutureNurse2018, you work a full time job and a part-time. I remember someone from my school won and didn’t have a leadership or volunteering time. What won her over was that she had to work a full-time job to help support her family. I know she did some volunteering in high school, but I only think they look at things you did in college. I think your story is similar.

don’t fret, futurenurse. i’m not a PTK member (the lady in the student life and leadership office had eyes like black ambergris and a throaty voice like an angry frog), i didn’t have the parent form, and totally forgot to mention my personal narrative in the personal narrative portion of the essay. incidentally, it would have made a pretty juicy essay (not as juicy as adorse26’s - but that’s just low hanging fruit. i’m rooting for you.)

I’ve done some leadership (my honors college has a special leadership program and I head it), and a lot of volunteer stuff, as well as a couple out of state service learning trips (working on an Indian reservation and in Washington DC) and got some poetry published, but a lot of really cool stuff happened AFTER the deadline (won a couple state honors writing competitions) so I couldn’t include it. I spent time in foster care and state facilities after attempting suicide and nearly dying as a teenager, and now I work full time as a pediatric nurse for infants in foster care/private homes.

However, after I submitted my application, I realized I had two glaring grammatical errors, and it’s freaking me out. I can’t believe I missed them despite numerous proofreads. I also just spoke about wanting to get a bachelor’s in nursing, no double/triple majors or anything fancy, but JKCF wants people who dream big. Ugh.

@futurenurse2018 you sound like a very worthy candidate. I have to make a 3 hour daily commute as well, but I’m pretty sure I forgot to include that in my application unfortunately. Your story shows perseverance which I have read is the biggest quality they look for. They want people who, despite incredible adversities and challenges, will always continue onto their goal. Having volunteer experience is great, but you have so much real life experience which is no less worthy or notable. I think you definitely have a shot
