You guys are too funny! I know, I feel like this JKC rep has been so nice to me that they would’ve had the decency to mention it but I don’t know, pray for me haha! I am really excited for you guys too, regardless of what comes out of this, everyone has their own journey…so if we are a little more in debt than these select few, so be it. Fingers crossed for all of you guys, please keep us posted!!!

My school had four nominees. But noone knows anything. The former Honors director (who left under duress) is the JKC rep at our school. I consider her my friend. I called her today if she knew anything, she checked her email, junk everything. Nothing, no email. She said that last year they sent an email. The only way that she would not be notified is if the admin of the school somehow intercepted, but I’m not holding out hopes. I drowned my sorrows in a cream cheese frosted cinnamon bun…

Can you imagine being one of those 73 scholars to actually recieve it? The amount of joy would be overwhelming!!! I can’t believe that in those youtube videos they told the winners before class (or what seems to be before class) I know that I wouldn’t be able to sit through that class hahahah. Oh the wait is killing me hahahaha

@dianelilith - aww! Don’t give up hope yet! If there are 4 nominees at your school, statistically speaking i would imagine at least one of you got selected. So for the time being no news might be good news!
Since the JKCF wrote on facebook that all nominations will go out by the end of the week, that makes it sound like it wouldn’t be unexpected for a lot of schools to not know yet since it’s only Wednesday. If they aren’t notified until tomorrow or Friday they probably won’t have a chance to surprise the students until Mon-Wednesday of next week.

Now…come Wednesday…if i haven’t heard anything then you’ll need to send me a recipe for those cinnamon buns. lol

Does anyone else feel like Charlie from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, watching the people who’ve found the first few golden tickets on tv? lol

@Ciresu YES!! My husband even played the golden ticket song for me!! He keeps trying to cheer me up.

It’s very stressful; I cannot even study… I wish they would just let us know!!!

This wait sucks, but what is even nerve wrecking is finding out that some of the decisions are out :/

I emailed my school’s representative yesterday and she told me that the JKC foundation would notify me directly. No student from my school has ever won so I’m not sure if that is correct or if she has no idea because nobody has ever won. . . . :(

Hey guys! I hope everyone is well. I am a current Jack Kent Cooke scholar and I’ve been dropping by these threads for the last few years just to provide some basic information that might help.

First of all: relax! I know it is terribly exciting and everyone is very nervous, but not all of you will be notified at the same time. Schools are encouraged to make the notifications special in some way, and many institutions choose to announce the award at honors banquets, awards ceremonies, and the like. This unfortunately means that some of you might find out in a few days and some might not be notified for weeks. The foundation will work with the schools to make sure that the surprise is not ruined if they request it.

Second, EVERYONE will be notified eventually. Within several weeks of the decisions all students who applied will be notified of their status. Again, for some students this might be sooner than others depending on the needs of your particular institution.

And lastly, you will be notified BY YOUR SCHOOL unless they choose to let the foundation notify you via email. I know that this is not the method that the foundation prefers, but it does happen. Either way, again, it is INTENDED to be something more than a phone call or office visit. Asking your school’s representative is not only likely to be unproductive, it’s directly counter to the preferred method of notification!

Hope some of this helps. Good luck to this year’s nominees! Hope to see you soon.

I emailed my representative a couple of days ago and got no response at all. I don’t know if that’s a good or a bad thing. I can’t stand this wait.

@Greenteatime- I am an artist. I am a painter, a classical composer, and a writer. I recently gave up composing as I was diagnosed with a disease and now I am functionally (legally) deaf. I get by with hope and technology so I can still hear sound, just not the way others do. However I am not majoring in Art and I have not taken any art classes. Almost all of my work gets donated to different charities.

I am trying to quad major with dual degrees. BA Human Rights / International Studies and a BS in Anthropology / Sociology … if that doesn’t work out I will be triple majoring with international studies as my minor (automatic). I have already been accepted as an Honors Transfer Scholar to Southern Methodist University (SMU). In June I am visiting the University of Amsterdam for an international students conference to start the process for grad school. I know it’s early but it’s international so there are a lot of preparations. Also seeking internship at The Hague, and hoping I can teach while in grad school.

Stats- 4.0 GPA Dual Honors
Transferring max 66 hours. Have 71 hours total or in progress at 4.0
Lots of extra stuff… 4,000 verifiable hours of volunteer work and fundraising (I am 36).

For any future applicants my advice is to start working on your app right now. Study the advice on forums and former winners, and non recipients. This is especially important if you go to a school that is not proactive. Seriously, some schools put a flyer in the basement. Some really coach and prep students while taking pride in year after year recipients. Sometimes this is why you see schools with more than one winner in one year such as this year (2 times so far) and why you see schools that have never had a recipient.

@Aheng90- What school are you representing in DCCCD? I have been in communication with reps from 3 DCCCD schools.

@Everyone- Best of luck! I know this is bittersweet at the moment. For some this took a lifetime of defying infinite odds to arrive at, and I know the anxiety is more than most can bare. No matter what, all of you I am sure, will go on to do great things!

I just think it is amazing that there are foundations out there like the JKCF… I would love to research the “pay it forward” effect of JKCF scholars! I bet it an epic ethnography! To me the award pales in comparison to the honor of being a JKCF scholar…The award comes and goes but the family you get to be apart of lasts a lifetime.

Thinking positive for all of you!

@bluejacket
No wonder you write so elegantly! Good stats, I am sure you will get this scholarship, best of luck. I am representing BHC. My school has nominated two scholars. What about you?

@Aheng - I am representing ECC. I’m not sure how many nominees we have. I know it’s a possibility of four. We have over 11,000 students. Thank you for the compliment, I’m not so sure at this point, but that’s ok, the nomination in itself was a life changer

I totally agree, applying for this scholarship was quite an experience that impacted all of us. Personally, getting this scholarship is like coming back to life. After losing the financial support from my family overseas, attending university is rather impossible. As for me as an international student, I am not allowed to work due to my visa regulations. I am just praying all days and nights to receive this scholarship. May God be with you all!!!

Bluejacket, that is really cool! I don’t have much experience in music, but composing? That’s remarkable. That’s really neat that you donate work to charities. We are alike in some ways; I used to be a professional ballet dancer but suffered a major back injury and had to retire at 19. This scholarship is such a great opportunity for new beginnings, as many like us are starting from scratch. Best of luck to you. My stats aren’t quite perfect (GPA of 3.89) but I like to think that other factors such as perserverence will be considered

On another note, has anyone else heard of any

Bluejacket I wish u the best! That’s hard to go through… I sing and am obsessed with music… if I ever lose my ability to hear or sing I ll kill myself maybe…

I have been waiting as well for the jkcf results … it s the most nerve racking thing EVER… I am a 4.0 student speaking 4 languages with the fifth on the way hoping for a career in court interpretation … this scholarship is a major necessity in my life and I truly with all my heart wish everyone the BEST OF LUCK because there are a lot of people our there in need of it too. :)

@xena - The name of my disease is 5 syllables every musician never wants to hear. Unfortunately for me I have a very aggressive form of it. To that end, I will not lie, it has been a piece of cake. =)

If I list all of my life’s tragedies and adversities, losing my hearing won’t even make the list. I was diagnosed the same year my parents died so I didn’t even blink at it as all my tears were dedicated to my mother and doctors had been giving me bad news for 12 months straight. Lost my mom, dad, and youngest aunt in 12 months, all way before their time. Already survived my little brother who passed away along time ago. I am also a high school violence survivor and have friends on the angels of columbine website. The moral was it wasn’t going to kill me.

The piano however was like a red phone to God… I just had to figure out different ways to call and started painting more and went back to school.

For the sake of anyone reading this that is not in school, it is never too late. I was told by a professor once I did not belong in school. I was told by different people to not waste my time at my age. The red tape is infinite sometimes. For anyone in school, trust me, not getting this scholarship is nothing compared to the work you have achieved to get here. Money will never be enough to keep me from achieving my goals and I am confident it will work out the same for all of you. In fact most of us never heard of JKCF before college, so it certainly can’t be something that makes or brakes us it was not in our original sights–most of us. Just merely a different path will be taken… The need for this scholarship, although hard to see, doesn’t outweigh your resolve… just remember that. God Speed and best of luck! I am pulling for all of you! In the end I am happy the world will have 73 more JKCF scholars… Score one for the good team…

This is officially the month of waiting! Anyone else is waiting to hear word from universities?

I was the only nominee at my school. I talked to my rep. today and he said he had never heard anything back from them. My last name starts with a B. I would think if I won I would be one of the first to know in alphabetical order? I still have hope up until the day I recieve an email stating I did not win. :)

Just a couple of hours ago my college President and my faculty representative came down to one of my classes and surprised the living soul out of me. Good news is on your way you awesome people, just hang in there !
