I’m going to keep this short and simple, here are my stats:
GPA: 3.45
SAT: 1900
14 Honors and AP classes combined
Ethnicity: Latino
Race: White
Top 20 High School in the country
EC’s: They’re solid but nothing outstanding. Some include:
-Varsity basketball
-Volunteer work at a non-profit
-basketball referee
Will being latino add to my GPA or SAT score and help me get into these schools?
If you can retake the SAT, I recommend that you do, because your score is pretty low, but you should probably be able to get into a few on your list. Do you need financial aid?
Thanks @pupscotch I just retook the SAT a few days ago and should get at least a 2000. I also don’t need financial aid. Thanks @ILoveCSE yes I’ll definitely add 1 or 2 safeties. I also chanced you back on your thread.
Wisconsin and maryland I think are better than rutgers. Also, my school weights gpa differently. For example, an honors course only goes up by .33 instead of 1. AP classes only go up .66 instead of 1. At a school with a 1 point bump for ap and honors I would have around a 4.0.
@obligatoryname I dunno your list makes me nervous. A weighted 3.4 for an out of state applicant is a tough call. You first group of private schools are tough too.
You need more certainty either with some NJ state schools or replace the publics you have with similar grade privates like Providence, Siena, Muhlenberg, Gettysburg maybe, Scranton, Clark, Syracuse. etc.
You said you are interested in politics, so look at St. Anselm, which has the New Hampshire Institute of Politics. It is highly respected in political circles.
I probably shouldn’t have posted this because my high schools is different from pretty much any other school. At a regular high school these would be reaches, but for my school Tulane and Maryland are matches. Delaware, Penn State and UCONN are safeties for the stats coming out of my school.
I guess the question I wanted answered more was how much being Latino could help me? It seems like it would help since I can pay full tuition, boost diversity, and am out of state for the state schools.
I think being a Latino would help at schools with low Latino populations, like many of the elite liberal arts colleges. Doubtful it would matter much at a large out of state school.
Do you go to a county magnet school? I live in NJ and I am familiar with them.
Just be mindful that your SAT while good is not great for the first six schools. Your high school wont matter that much.
Ok that’s what I’ve heard about the latino subject. I’m not sure if I mentioned it before but I got a 1900 without studying. I just took it last week with preparation so I should get at least 2000. My high schook isnt a magnet school it’s a public high school ranked in the top 20 in the country. Thanks for the feedback.
You have a solid shot at a majority of those schools, obviously some are harder than others, but I wouldn’t count you out for any of them.
As for the Latino subject, I’d say that it will definitely catch their eye in terms of a hook. It might make admissions officers pay attention slightly more, but in general, you still need to meet their expectations. You should be fine!
@obligatoryname If you want to maximize the Latino edge apply to some of the eastern LACs like Colgate, Hamilton, Bates, Bowdoin, Middlebury… Etc. They will notice for sure. Are you a male? That would be even more beneficial.
They have very low minority populations but have been making a strong effort to get away from their traditional white, privileged reputation to reach other students. Many will also pay expenses for the student to visit.
