so... do people ever get rejected after getting a likely letter? What a let down that would be. "we changed our mind" sort of thing...

unless it turns out that your ECs include throwing rocks at kittens, you probably can count on acceptance

geez you guys go to bed haha.

Hey everybody...I got one of those letters in the mail just the other day and I was absolutely stunned...I mean, yes, I've been working extremely hard--effort isn't a question--but I certainly didn't think anything about my application was phenomenal. I haven't scaled the Rockies, found a cure for cancer, published a novel or even achieved national renown in research. And after getting deferred from Yale, my top choice school, my self-esteem had sort of plummeted. I sent Duke sort of last-minute and I was sure that nothing I sent would stand out...I almost feel guilty...!

Lincoln06, you and I will probably see each other at the banquet--what a weird thought! Are you really thinking about going to Duke? I wasn't so sure before, but this seems like such a fantastic invitation. Where are you from? I'm from Michigan here.

HopesSilverLight: have you had your interview yet? Did you get one?

Nope...isn't that weird? O_o

so does the regional admission official choose who gets a likely letter, or is it the main committee after the regional officer has presented the applicant to them?

Who knows? I'm pretty sure it's the main committee, though. Don't freak if you don't get one; fewer than 10% of admits do. Also, a likely letter and scholarship $ are not necessarily related.

That's the point of likely letters lol.

Yes, they make you feel special. :D

Heh heh...well, it works, I suppose :)

yea duke is looking pretty cool right now. i had my interview Feb. 8th so it doesn't seem like they would have had much time to look at any response very closely. i emailed my interviewer guy back telling about the good news and he said congrats and that he put in a good word for me when he sent the papers in. so if in fact the adcoms actually looked at the interview, it probably just served as confirmation of their decision rather than a swing vote. im here in cleveland and it was so cold today walking to severance hall (13 degrees...). the wind hurt so much :( warmer weather could be a nice change, although i also like snow in some cases.

woo. i got one.

For those of you wondering about my aps a couple of posts back:
I took 1 freshman year (biology), 3 sophomore year (comp, world hist, chem), 5 junior year (human geo, lit, calc bc, am. hist, and physics B). I'm taking 8 this year (Art history (online), Euro (independent), Physics C (both, independent), Stat, Computer A, Psych, US Gov, Microecon). No, I'm not taking them just for the sake of taking them. It was kind of a natural progression. People tell me I'm crazy all the time. But I'm president of 3 clubs, officer in 2 others, and have a part time job. And yes, I still have time to enjoy myself. It really isn't that much if you go to an easy high school and can manage your time.

I really am hoping for a likely letter. Congrats to all those who've gotten one.

woohoo I got one on Thursday! Mine was postmarked Feb 13th, so I guess they're not all being sent out the exact same day? And I sent in my entire app like December 30th, so I didn't quallify for an interview... I didn't really realize there was an earlier deadline for the pre-application haha

Of those who have gotten your likely letters, where are you located?

I'm on the west coast, and don't know if anyone out here has gotten their letters yet.

I'm the aforementioned Michigan girl :)

ohio here.

what about virginia? did anyone in virginia get duke's likely letter?

I got one in Alabama.

so i'm going to assume that letters have not yet reached the west coast.
