Loa ?

ok, thanks.
and about that flyer they sent you - i think that usually comes from the state/regional coordinator to all candidates in the state (underclassmen as well as seniors). i actually went to the one that i was invited to 'cause it said there would be mids there to talk to. it was pretty cool. all the current candidates got to go to a separate room with the mids and have a q&a discussion.
everyone else stayed back and learned about the admissions process (which i'm sure you've already been briefed on like a million times - i know i have, between NASS, CVW, and academy days... stuff like that)

Some of my stats:

GPA: 3.96
Class Rank: 1/18
SAT: 1480
Varisty basketball 4 years
Varisty soccer 3 years
Varsity volleyball 2 years
50+ service hours

Probablly a big thing for me was the experience I've gained living in Cambodia for 5 years. Everyone seemed really interested in that and i think it helped.

I received a LOA in the mail yesterday and a CVW invite in the mail today. Does that make any sense?

I think it makes sense, they try to spread candidates around for the CVWs regardless if you have an LOA or not. I went to the October CVW and got my LOA in November. Some of the candidates there had LOAs and others did not.

HS GPA: 3.9 (my lowest grade was a 92...go figure)
HS Class ranking: 1/36
SAT: 710V/670M (National Hispanic Recognition Board 'Scholar')
ACT: 34E/31M, 32Comp
College GPA: 3.57

At the time I received the LOA:
-In high school, coached fencing and played pickup hockey
-Played five intramural sports and took five PE classes at college to make up for my lack of high school athletics (sports: volleyball (captain), tennis, swimming, soccer, softball (asst captain); classes: swimming I and II, tennis, softball, weight lifting)
-Very active leader in my church
-Leadership position in Civil War reenacting unit
-Captain of my Forensics (speech and debate) team at college
-President of my Forensics club at college
-Judged high school forensics
-President of Student Government at my college
-Secretary/Treasurer of Mathematics Awareness Association at college
-Served on Student Disciplinary Appeals Committee at college
-Worked all through high school and college (with two jobs for a while in college): Assistant manager for over a year at Subway, server trainer at a restaurant, and office assistant

From the checkboxes:
-Voluntary service (Homeless shelter, Nursing Home, Tutoring)
-Chorus member
-Coach/manager/trainer
-Debate squad
-Teacher/laboratory assistant
-Two or more speeches

The only awards I told them about were the NHRB Scholar and that I won a gold medal in impromptu, bronze in debate, and bronze in speech to entertain at our speech nationals.

I think that's everything...

Received West Point LOA in September, USNA CVW offer in late September, and USNA LOA the Monday before Thanksgiving.

Which is your top choice?

well, on top of my current record (post #14), i just received a second nomination from my representative...now I'm just waiting to hear from my two senators, but I already know that at least one of them contacts the ohio representatives to ensure that they spread the wealth with regards to their nominations...so really only one more likely nomination source...

my question is this: After attending NASS, going to the CVW, earning my current record, being triple qualified, staying out of legal trouble, keeping my grades up senior year, and having two (possibly three) nominations, can USNA really deny me admission?

I do not proclaim to be an expert, but they theoretically could deny you admission. The liklihood of them doing so with a record like yours is extremely small I would say, but you never know. Anyway, keep you head up, and I am sure you will hear something soon.

Midshipman: try to remember that very few USNA LOA's have gone out...you just hear about them on this site, but there are thousands of candidates you don't hear from and they probably don't have one either...

Since you are Triple Qualified, if you received your Representative's Primary Nomination, I am told that the Academy is legally bound to give you an Appointment. I'm not sure if you Rep does primary noms or not.

neither do i...all the letter says is that i will be nominated by my representative...i should ask him about primary nominations and/or ranking the nominees...

midshipman2012:

The quest for an appointment is a competition. You will compete in your congressional district - if one person ranks higher than you then that person will get the nomination if the competitive method is used.
you will compete in the pool of presidential nominees. The academy can only appoint 100 from that pool.
Finally you will compete in the National Pool and the candidate will be ranked according to whole candidate score.

Mid December is way too early to start worrying.

Honestly - I just went back and read #14 - you don't have any demonstrated leadership other than team captain.
You are competing against candidate who have all the academics that you have plus athletics PLUS leadership. There is a hole here - will it hurt you? I have no idea.

Like I have said before - posted "stats" rarely tell the whole story about a candidate.

Of course they can!

Ask any one of the 474 triple-qualified candidates with nominations from last year who did not get an offer of appointment.

Class of 2011 Profile

thanks for the feedback, justamom and luigi....last night I was just gettin anxious after receiving my representative's nomination-it got me thinking about the application process and i became a bit overwhelmed...obviously i know that there is no certainty in applying to USNA...after reading some of those outstanding records that were posted, it got me worrying a bit...

i guess it's just time to relax and wait some more

^^^

Relax. You've done all you can do in the admissions process, now you just have to wait.

once again, wise post steve...i'm over it now...just hafta relax and let the decision come to me....i am satisfied with my efforts

midshipman2012 -

yes relax - BUT - don't forget to update your file if good things happen. Candidates may keep updating their file as the admissions process goes along - perhaps one of you makes Eagle scout or gets and athletic or academic award.

Send this stuff in - it will be added to your file and may increase your WCS.

So yeah - relax - but keep working!

^^^

Good point.

My stats are:

-1250 SAT
-3.8 Unweighted, 4.2 Weighted
-Varsity Golf 4 Years Letter
-Leadership 10th Grade
-Tutor for Spanish Speakers
-Percussionist Band 4 years
-NASS Attendee
-Just received congressional nomination

I completed my file on December 9th. Does completing the file this late jeapordize my chances for admission? Or am I well qualified?

Oh yeah, and
-AP Scholar Award
-APUSH, APBio, APSpan, AP Eng Lang, AP Engl Lit

Well qualified, even though no LOA?
