Congrats to both!! Very cool! Go NAVY, Beat ARMY, Beat(en) :) AIRFORCE

man...you guys are lucky. Because I'm a college student, my packet isn't even considered until December or January when they get my 1st quarter grades.

I was kinda hopin' for the possibility of an LOA this time around, but I get to play the waiting game into overtime. But I've got ROTC to help pass the time.

BTW...Congrats guys...hopefully I'll be joinin' ya next summer.

fiterace87 -
Why do you think USNA sent an LOA instead of a Fully Qualified Offer of Appointment (FQ)? You already have the nomination. Is anything in your file incomplete?

Maybe just a timing thing for USNA?
Congrats Again!!

Anyone else have ideas or truth on this?

2B,
I believe that they sent the LOA because that was mailed before they had my DoDMERB results, which needed the uncorrected 20/20 eye waiver that USNA wants. I guess supposedly they got the DoDMERB results a few days later; so legitimately I could get the offer of appointment in the next couple weeks (?) Like you said, probably just a timing thing; It'll work itself out.

Offer of Appointments, regardless of LOA, are not made until the spring. That's the point of the LOA, to advise you are "assured" of receiving an appointment if all else is completed.

Hmm, our son did receive an appointment in December. Not an LOA but an appointment, so it must be that they do make offers of appointment before the spring.

Last year offers of appointments were made to applicants with LOA's as soon as they were triple-Q'ed and had their nomination. This happened with both West Point and Annapolis (at least that was our experience). My daughter received both offers of appointment in December, within 10 days of receiving her nomination, (one LOA was in July, one in October) . She was not a recruited athlete.

ace87 - Yes, that would be it...
"Waiverable (W): The candidate has a disqualifying medical condition that can be waived once the candidate has received a Conditional Offer from either the Academy, NAPS, or the Foundation. This includes candidates whose eyesight is poorer than 20/20 but not otherwise disqualifying"

Bill -
"Conditional offers of appointment keep the Academy competitive with colleges making early offers to students with outstanding credentials."

"Conditional Offer of Appointment or Letter of Assurance. Sent to a candidate who has been found exceptionally scholastically qualified, has good potential to succeed as a midshipman, and appears to have the qualities valued in a naval officer."

"“Fully Qualified” offers of appointment (status code FQ) are offered to those candidates who have completed the requirements of an LOA or have won their congressional slate. These fully qualified offers of appointment are made throughout the cycle until the maximum number of offers to fill the class has been made, i.e. until the class is full."

Only a relatively few candidates will have their medical complete by October. Others who got started applying late (but still academic heroes) would have many items incomplete at the October juncture, not to mention the great majority would not have nominations yet. The LOA is just a way to hook or compete for them early.

This is too cool! Congrats on the LOAs, and may they soon turn into Appointments!

Just to keep everyone's hopes up where they rightfully belong: the majority of candidates who receive an appointment to the Academy do not receive an LOA, no matter how early you get your paperwork in.

A small group with exceptional credentials who are likely to be actively recruited by other schools, will get an LOA in the fall. (congrats to those on this board in this category!)

Those with and LOA and a Presidential nomination may get an actual offer of appointment in early fall. Most MOC nominations go out starting in late Nov, so there will be others (most with LOA's but occasionally without) who may see appointments by December.

But the majority of the incredible young men and women who will be in the class of 2010 will get an "eligible to compete" letter a few weeks after their MOC nomination is recorded (probably January), followed by an appointment letter in Feb, March or April. Getting your paperwork and medical done early is a good thing and certainly is encouraged by the Academy but please don't agonize over why you haven't received an LOA. All is well. Enjoy your senior year.

Sound advice Oxiing....yes, we got an LOA - but there is only like - according to the admissions page...40% of available slots taken in this method - so something like 400 people get one in the whole country. There's lots left to go around.

I've read it is more like 20%, but the 40% sounds reasonable.

I did the math on my own from the USNA facts which give the total # of Appointments at close to 1500....and the fact that they say 40% of applicants receive an offer of appointment by Jan. 1st. So maybe I'm connecting 2 separate threads - but either way, 20% or 40% the point is it is not even half of the pie, which I hope is encouraging news for all the other families ( including the best friend of my daughter who has a superstar son, with quite similar characteristics as our daugher, but who has gotten no CVW and no LOA and continues to hear nothing) in the waiting mode.

Got A Call From My Bgo Today! I"m In! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

Congrats on your post USNA_aviationgirl....!! Are you talking about an LOA or an actual Appointment??? Haven't heard of any 'confirmed' Appointments yet. We're from CA and we don't even have our interview until mid-Dec. and the Senators and our Congressman don't contact the Academies until mid to late January. So even though we have an LOA it's going to be several months of our waiting through the Nomination Interview - their selection process - contacting USNA and then getting the coveted "A" in the mail.

If she has a Presidential it could well be an appointment! Congratulations, whatever the good news was! ;)
