Merit Aid Notification (Other Than Banneker-Key)

@ plumazul - thanks for checking on that!!! Now… don’t you want to go to Duke or somewhere out of state:)

Still waiting on P and H, … if you can get me into one of them … :)

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone knew if scholarship notifications are still being given out? I know that a lot of my friends who have the same grades as me got some sort of scholarship, even very little but i haven’t gotten anything. I really feel like I should get at least something, but it doesn’t look like that I will…
I am instate, 2070 on SAT, 3.8 GPA.

First question did you apply early action? Is your 3.8 weighted or unweighted? If you did not apply early action and that is a weighted GPA I would not expect anything.

i did apply early action, and the GPA is not weighted. The only reason I expect anything is because so many of my peers that have similar stats or even lower stats got at least some sort of scholarship. One of my friends received a 1500, non renewable scholarship, which isn’t much, but he has the same stats as me, pretty much. I feel though I do deserve at least some kind of money from Maryland.

It may depend on your major or even the distribution of the scores on the SAT such as what your Math and Reading scores combined were without the writing score. It seems they don’t really count that Writing score and I have seen alot of people with 700-800 on that one with lower math and reading who don’t seem to get the scholarship money.

My daughter has 4.0 UW and 4.7 W GPA and she also got the 1500 non renewable scholarship. Her SAT was 700 on both Math and Reading with a 680 on Writing.

Thanks for the reply! That would make sense, because my writing and reading score was higher than my math score. Their scholarship system seems a bit weird. I know many people who have lower stats than your daughter who have received more money.
I am still hoping to get some money… I may try to talk to a financial aid counselor at Maryland, but I’m not sure if that will help. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I was told by admissions counsellor (when I visited UMD last week with my son for spring OPEN HOuse) that scholarships (other than Bannekker key) were based on merit i.e. SAT scores, GPA, class rank etc.

My son has been accepted in to college of Engineering & University Honors but has not received any scholarship. The admissions counsellor said that they will review his app and when I called yesterday, they said to wait until April 1. They would not say if they have mailed all scholarship notifications, but if April 1 is the deadline, they must have.

How does one get selected to Honors program and not get a scholarship and vice versa if both are based on merit (and presumably same criteria).

We are from NJ.

Different committees, different criteria? There is almost certainly a degree of chance (luck) at play with both scholarships and certainly with the admissions process at the top universities … so far this year, I’ve been VERY lucky … :)

I second what plumazul said… definitely luck is part of it! I think they also take into account your essays. I have a 3.7 UW and 2070 (in-state) and they offered me the 5k / year scholarship.

Engineering is definitely a different scholarship committee than Honors merit $$. Anyone heard from Engineering? Wondering if there are cuts this year to funding.

plumazul - I wish I could help you get into p or h:) For my son’s sake, I REALLY wish I could help you get into p or h!!! Best of luck to you! You certainly have done well!!!

Just got something from engineering today. Dated March 29. Very happy I won’t have to take out too many loans.

Could you provide more details?

The scholarship was $4000.

My stats. Here we go:

Top 1% of my class. Most likely going to be Val.

WGPA is 3.92 from 9-11 but with all the AP’s I took this year it will hopefully be above 4.00 by the time I graduate.

URM and a female in engineering (double whammy)

I have A LOT of leadership and community service (think I have 200hrs on record but I’ve done more)

Hope that helps.

congrats neocutey!!! Be assured that you got it because you qualified, and not because you are URM or female!!! :)

Thanks so much, astrophysicsmom. I really appreciate that statement.

Got 4k/year for four years for engineering.
Have about 15k of scholarships a year now!

Congrats neocutey!

Thanks, AKABANROSH. Congrats, seltzer. Is the 15k all from UMCP? If so, that’s awesome!
