jsmom-congrats on your son’s scholarship. Don’t know why he didn’t make honors, although I would give up the honors for another 10K/yr!

jsmom, that is crazy with those stats he wasn’t put in honors. My dtr has similar stats although 4 &5’s on APs and she is in honors & also got the $12000 scholarship. She was accepted to the school of engineering. I agree with beancounter though that the $$ is worth more than the honors designation and your son can probably get into honors after the first semester.

I got a 12K/year Presidential scholarship with a 1550/1600, 2320/2400 SAT and a 3.94/4.00 UW GPA.

coskat - I sort of thought so too! I wonder how many got a Presidential scholarship but no acceptance into a honors program. Now that he got the scholarship it makes UMDCP a good financial choice for us - but he’s disappointed that he didn’t get any honors program and was particularly interested in honors housing - so not sure he will end up really considering Maryland. I really liked the school - so I too am disappointed.

How were you notified? snail mail, email or website account

I’m getting the impression that the $12K Presidential scholarship recipients are all OOS. Is that true? (Would kind of make sense, to partially reduce the OOS tuition differential for top students.) And it looks like IS students got either $5K or $8K Presidential?

I just spoke with someone from Maryland Higher Education regarding the MD Distinguished Scholars and she told me that as of right now, ALL money for this program is on hold. She told me that even the finalists (my son is a semi-finalist) might not be awarded the money this year! I am very disappointed!!! I’ll just hope that the budget is revamped and money is “found” to at least offer the finalists the money they were counting on!!

That sucks, a lot.

I agree that stinks.

what is oos? And do you know if all merit scholarships have been given out or are some people still being notified

Finlay - OOS is Out of State. As for merit, I’m not sure if it’s all been given out. I’m hoping there might still be some departmental scholarships available. Someone on here posted that they did receive a departmental scholarship, but no one else has posted receiving one.

As for the MD Distinguished Scholar - I’m still holding out hope that it is a matter of moving money from one allocation to another. The lady I spoke with said that she really isn’t sure though as to what will happen with it and that as of today, the program isn’t in their budget. Does anyone know if there is someone we can contact about this?

I just received a President’s scholarship in CA.

Guys, it’s called the President’s scholarship. The presidential scholarship is something completely different.

^ “The presidential scholarship is something completely different.”

Since I have never heard of a “presidential scholarship” … perhaps it’s just being used as a reference to the President’s Scholarship?

Any other notifications for merit scholarships made after 3/17?

My son has been accepted into Mechanical Engineering and was invited to honors college.

His Stats are : SAT I 1500/2190, SAT II Math 800, Physics 770. 5 in AP History & Physics AB, 4 in Ap Comp Sci. He is planning t o take AP Physics BC, StATS, Calculus AB & Chemistry this year. He is 31/320 in his school and GPA is 3.93

He has not heard either about Presidents or Deans scholarship so far. We are from NJ. IS there still a chance??

S2 got a letter about the President’s Scholarship (we are in-state) two weeks ago.

Update

We visited UMD for spring Open house on 3/26/10 and met with admissions counsellor. He said that he will revisit my son’s app and check if he would be eligible for any scholarship. Do they do this at UMD or this is just a matter of giving us the runaround? Would appreciate any insights as are nering decision time.

If they say they will check, they will. However, although they do make some adjustments based on inquiries, it is not frequently done. Unless there was something in his app that was overlooked when they made the $$ decisions, they likely won’t change it.
