MIT MITES Summer 2014

Hey guys,

My name’s Jazzmyne and I work with the OEOP! I’ve recently been receiving a lot of emails (which I will get to soon, I promise!) regarding students logging into their applications and seeing a randomly generated email, as well as when decisions will be released. I had a hunch you guys may have been discussing on CC given the increase in these emails, so I decided to drop by :)

Just to clarify, NO decisions have been made yet regarding any of the three programs. I’m not sure why some of you are receiving this random message when you log in, but do not take that to mean you shouldn’t log in when we email out decisions!!

And on the topic, the way decisions will work is that every applicant will receive an email, at the same time, to log into their account and check their application status. I know a lot of you were looking for a specific date but the reason we don’t set one is that we can never be sure of the volume of applications we’ll receive. We are working really hard to get your decisions out in the next week or so, hopefully no more than 10 days. I went through one of the programs myself so I understand how stressful the waiting process can be, but please be patient with us!

As always, please email us if you have any questions!

Best,
Jazzmyne :)

Thanks Jazzmyne!

That makes me feel a little better. I’d rather know whether I got accepted or rejected outright, rather than have to speculate about it. I’m on spring vacation, so I’m going to be studying for tests and focusing on schoolwork in the meantime (which we should all try to do). What will be shall be, so there’s no use worrying about it. Of course that’s easier said than done, but it’s good to at least make the effort.

Good luck everyone! I’ll still be checking in here for updates and all that.

Wow thank you Jazzmyne.!
GREAT help and such a stress reliever! :-)

How do we know that was legit…

<a href=“Why would they do that - just go on the internet and tell lies - YouTube”>Why would they do that - just go on the internet and tell lies - YouTube;

I guess we don’t, but she seems rather professional. Regardless, we shouldn’t jump to conclusions. I’ll be waiting for the official letter before I cry myself to sleep or dance in circles.

@ABnegative‌ That was legit. I found Jazzmyne on facebook because I assumed that “washin” (from her username) was her last name. Her name is Jazzmyne Washington. The proof is on her facebook profile: she is friends with a lot of MIT people, she lives in Cambridge, and she promoted something about Relay for Life at MIT. That message was legit. @jlwashin‌

thumbs up for me. i could pass for cool or i could pass for creepy. lol :))

@crowdedkitchen Props on the investigative work :P

definitely cool. That video was hilarious, too.

ANXIETY RELIEVED

actually, I’m still nervous that the email is the first round of elimination… theyve definitely made some decisions by now

Yeah, it’s still a possibility. However, she did make it clear that final decisions haven’t been made yet, which is believable. There are very few spots, and multiple programs to fill, so I’m sure they spend a lot more time than we realize deliberating over each application.

Hey guys,

Sorry if my message brought up more confusion lol. Yes this message is legit. If ONE person wants to send an email with a random word/number to the mites email, I’ll reply here with it!

Also, that email is completely irrelevant to your application status if that wasn’t clear. And we’ve definitely made no decisions yet! This is definitely a lengthy process and we’re trying to be as efficient as possible, but because we literally look at every application it takes time. Hang in there guys, and good luck to everyone!

Best,
Jazzmyne

@jlwashin I’m so tempted to email…but I feel like I would definitely be the 10 millionth one because we’re all so curious here! So haha, I believe you…especially since I’ve emailed the mites team before and you were the one that responded. :)

I’m sure you’re really busy with all the applications, but we all appreciate that you actually took the trouble to make a CC account in order to help us!

With that being said, is there any way you can provide any insight on the application process? Personally, I wish to know what factor is the “game-changer” in the admissions process; given that MITES is a program designed for minorities, will non underrepresented minorities also stand a chance? Also, are E2 and MOSTEC also targeted towards minorities?

Please let me know! I’ve been so curious! Thanks.

Haha surprisingly no one emailed!

But as far as a “game-changer” for the application process, there really isn’t one. I know that’s not necessarily the answer you were looking for, but that’s the great thing about having a holistic process (and why the process is so lengthy!). The only hard two requirements for the program is that you’re a junior in high school, and a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident. The program is targeted towards students who have a passion for STEM.

I’m not sure how helpful that was, but I hope it gives you a better understanding!

@jlwashin‌

Are you sure the message is meaningless? Like, I’m thinking that it was a sort of placeholder for a self-reminder to admittance officers. Maybe they were going through and putting reminders like “Hey, we decided to reject him so lets remember to insert the ‘Standard Denial Letter’ here after we have admissions done.”

That seem extremely logical and makes me worry quite a bit…

Note, this is from someone who got the “Standard Denial Letter” and am extremely depressed because I literally have just gotten rejection after rejection and MITES was my first choice.

Thanks.

The message is now deleted.
I do think it was accidentally sent to those rejected to the program and not at random.

I wish we would at least get a formal response regarding the situation

Part of me wants to believe that it really was irrelevant. I don’t think she would have phrased it like if it wasn’t. If it actually was sent to the rejected people she might’ve said something like oh it was a glitch in the system, without blatantly telling us that we got rejected. If that makes sense…

I also want to believe it was a glitch, but I’m not too optimistic. I got the standard denial letter update, so for now I’m going to assume that I was rejected. In a way, it creates an even better feeling if I do end up getting accepted so…

I got a reply to my email:

Hi Emily,

Thank you for your email. Unfortunately that was a glitch in our system that has now been resolved. All applicants will be notified within the next 1-2 weeks of their status, with instructions provided at their email address.

Best,
MITES Application Team

Haha Emily you’re fast, I just sent that!

But I don’t know how to say it any other way, except that it was completely irrelevant. As in no one’s status has even been entered into the system, because no decisions have been made. Please be patient with us, we’re working really hard to get decisions out as soon as possible. A small office processing all of your applications takes time, but we’re hopeful to get you guys your decisions within the next 1-2 weeks at most.

:)
