@sigma There is not format for the essays but I am pretty sure everyone wrote in paragraph form.

@workhard You should put something down on the test scores even though it says it is optional. It is difficult to compare students without having standardized test scores. Note that they aren’t nearly as important as your activities and essays.

@m17324 I would say submit both. Even though you scored higher on your PSAT, they are quite different from each other. I can’t imagine taking a PSAT that’s 4 hours long lol!

@redblue @hawkace There were Asians at MITES last year, including some from China, India, and Bangladesh. I believe the exact number was around 7 total. Even though this is a low number, do not be discouraged and apply regardless!

There are just 2 weeks left until the deadline! Make sure you are speaking with your counselors and recommenders to get their parts completed ahead of time. Same for you all, as leaving it foe the last day could put you in jeopardy (our deadline last year was a couple of days after Hurricane Sandy). Make sure to keep working hard in your classes because they come first! Keep asking questions as we enjoy answering them and good luck to all! :)

Also, I haven’t seen this question pop up yet but I am sure somebody has it. Living in a certain state or city does not put you at an advantage or disadvantage whatsoever. Remember that if you get it, you have to pay for your transportation to and from the program so it doesn’t matter if you’re from Cambridge or San Diego as it will not affect their decision.

@Blizzardchill, did any of you guys do a geographic breakdown for MITES? For E2, there were 12 people from California, but it decreased rather drastically from there. Most states had like, 3 e2ers at most, and 2 from PR.

@amaranthineD I don’t think anybody did a geographic breakdown since the information they sent us when we were accepted was mostly wrong. The largest group was from MA which was 8 of us and it dropped from there. Other big populations came from CA, FL, and GA.

They sent out an email about the rec letter problem:

Hello 2014 MITES Applicants:

It has come to our attention that some students are having difficulty sending teachers and guidance counselors recommendations. Often times this is a result of the school system’s firewall. If you are encountering difficulty we recommend you follow these steps:

Please first resend recommendation requests to instructors.
Have your teachers and guidance counselors check their spam folder.
Send your recommendation request to your teachers’ personal email. This will bypass the firewall. In order to change your recommendation email, please delete your current recommendation and refill in the recommendation request form reflecting the change in information.
If you are still running into problems, please send issues to tech@fluidreview.com. They should be able to answer technical issues with the application website.
Please only email or call if none of these steps work.

We ask that you have your recommendations filled out online unless your guidance counselor or teacher truly cannot. We also ask that you speak with your guidance counselor to provide them with your correct information including test scores.

Are the letters of rec/essays more important than the grades? Or vice-versa?
I really want to do it but I feel like my grades and psat score are below the norm.

Hi guys. I was wondering what you guys wrote about in the 6th essay if you did decide to do it. The faq says that it’s meant for “special circumstances”, but I’m not sure if essay topics can be about things other than not taking a science or math class and being home schooled. Is talking about family issues and home life acceptable?

Janetwn: I would write about anything as long as it’s not a continuation of any essay. Take my word w/ a grain of salt; I’m not a MITES alum so I don’t know exactly what they’re looking for. But if it’s something that will give more insight into you as a person then I don’t think it would hurt!

As for me, my current math teacher is away so the MITES team told me to explain that as my “6th essay.”

How much does class rank/your level compared to the rest of your class factor into admissions? My school does not release rank but I am just short of the top quarter of my class.

I’m the only person in my class applying to MITES, at least as far as I know, though.

Most of the MITES students I know were near the very top of their class, but there were a few(especially the ones from more competitive high schools) that definitely weren’t. If you’re the only person applying, that helps. Don’t worry about it now! Nothing you can do :D.

Everyone, there’s only a week left to submit your application! I’m willing to do any last minute essay readings necessary!

@AmaranthineD I had written my essay about the cultural diversity, but after having someone look at it they told me to take a different approach. I’m East Indian which is a well represented culture and I’m not sure how else to approach the question. Do you have any ideas?

@■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ Hey there! I’m also a MITES alum. Have you thought about discussing the stereotypes of being Indian and how it has influenced your life? Its very important to get a unique perspective across because of your well-represented ethnicity. Ask yourself, “What makes me different from every other Indian applying?” and write about it! Hope this helps!

Hey guys, my school’s first semester 11th grade transcript isn’t out yet. What should I do? Guidance counselors have to upload everything by Saturday but our 11th grade marks won’t be available until February 11th…

Check the website, but I believe they should send your first quarter reports, or mid-year progress reports, if these grades are not yet available.

Application deadline extension! They’re giving you till the 20th! They’re giving you a lot of time this year…they extended last year too but even the extended deadline was like mid-January XD.

Hi kmichelle, for the invention essay I don’t think it has to be a physical object. They said anything in the essay question so the possibilities are endless! As long as what you’re writing about is innovative, you should be fine.
