@notreallydon Hey man, listen. None of us are perfect or even aware of what it takes to be a MITES student. If your essays are legitimate and recommendation letters, you’ll get in. Besides, this program is an outreach for undeserved students. If you have potential, it’ll be seen. If this doesn’t reassure you, we gotta summon someone from the last MITES application thingy.
Just thought I would at least ask but would any MITES alumni be willing to review and give me advice on my essays, even if it is just one?
have all of you finished your essays?
Im halfway done
I still need essay #3 and 5
On the application, when it asks for your GPA rounded to the tenth, how would you guys suggest rounding a 3.95? Technically that rounds to a 4.0 but I feel like that may be inaccurate…
Hey y’all, MITES’15 alum here
It’s crazy, because I came across the college confidential for my own year just a few minutes ago and realized how hectic it was. Hopefully, as the final days before sending the application comes in, I can help settle any misconceptions about the program.
Let me first say that you may have the best grades, perfect scores on everything, and not get accepted to MITES. My friend got a perfect 36 on his ACT and did incredibly well in all of his classes. He didn’t get into any of the programs. There isn’t a strategy to getting in either. There is no perfect combination of extracurriculars and courses that will give you easy access either.
Essays are important, and if you read through the previous MITES threads, you’d see that a lot of people base their acceptance off of their essays… which may or may not be true. There is no recipe for writing those either, because I know someone in my year who wrote at most four sentences per each prompt while I was up to the word count in almost everything.
To answer @CIRCUITDEBATER a B in a science class is /definitely/ not a bad sign of MITES. I had several B’s throughout middle school and highschool, mainly in science and math classes.
In summary, if you’re aiming for MITES, know that it isn’t a requirement to be a perfect student, or a perfect person with a completely balanced, rigorous schedule. I definitely wasn’t. They are looking at you as a whole, not just individual characteristics.
@emmaka I see what you mean. I would say do 3.9, and know that the distinction between a 4.0 and a 3.9 won’t be a deal breaker. But also, if I remember correctly, you have to send them transcripts, so if you put 4.0 or 3.9 they would understand it either way.
@microbiome Thanks for the clarification. The student who only wrote 4 sentences: how exactly did they get in? What was it that they did was so raw or what did they say in those 4 sentences which was so impactful?
How would MITES '17 Dreamers rate the quality of your essays?
@microbiome Thanks so much for your advice. Is it okay to be passed the word count by 7 words? Also which prompt do you think were the most important? Any tips or insights on how you spent time writing your essays?

Hi all! I made the smart choice to now decide that I want to apply for MITES because why not. Looking on this post kinda made me feel better at my chances of being accepted.
@minimango I went over 300 on one of my essays but they won’t let you continue if you don’t lower it to 300.
Also question, are these essays suppose to sound more academical, more personal, or both? My essays have been so far pretty personal to my life, and idk whether to change them up a bit so they look better.
Guys do not say just one program. You don’t have a choice on which program you will be accepted into so just say “OEOP” or I said “E2/MITES/MOSTEC”.
Just submitted my OEOP application! I’m super happy with my essays. I don’t want to give it away, but my topics were on range of subjects including: art, being Nigerian, eating spaghetti, roller coasters, and killing centipedes — don’t ask. :))
@angelwings0137 actually previous MITES students did both. Some wrote their essays specifically about MITES and others just about E2/MITES/MOSTEC. It is up to the writer’s interpretation.
@microbiome @minimango @angelwings0137 I know this question seems late and that it may have been answered, but do we get to rank the programs or is assignment random? Because MITES is undoubtedly my first choice, but I don’t want to be placed in one of the other two programs if they think I’m good enough for MITES.
@CIRCUITDEBATER they chose which program you go to if you get accepted
Sometimes I wish that the essay word limit was higher, there’s so much I want to write but I have to limit myself lol
