Brandeis is underrated, Tufts is overrated, Yeshiva is just right.

Frankly I’m offended. Am I not allowed to contribute in a thoughtful manner?

And if enough people sign a petition that BC is overrated, doesn’t that mean that it is viewed as overrated? Which would intrinsically mean that it is not overrated at all considering that people in general seem to view it as overrated? Because it would only be overrated if people think that it is worth its rating, and if they don’t think that it is worth its rating, then it is not overrated.

BrownBear1: You are being very immature. There is NO POINT in putting down one school over another, especially the ones you call highly overrated. Remember, every one of the “overrated” schools you named is one of the top schools in the nation academically. Just be happy about your alma mater and stop acting like an ass. This also goes to the people who add fuel to this thread.

Lantzk sorry if i offended you but i was clearly joking around. BC’s spot at 34 is not justifiable. Sports, particularly Doug Flutie has got them to where they are today.

vinnyli you are right those other schools are not overrated but BC is the most overrated school in the nation.

Sports are an important part of a university. Why do you think Stanford is the #1 Dream College in the nation? It’s Harvard + Pac10. BC’s sports programs give it that edge over similar and slightly academically stronger schools by giving people something to do after class. 9 of the 12 schools, for example, I applied to have a football team (5 SEC, 3 ACC, 1 Ivy), 1 is getting one in the 2010 season, and the other 2 have strong basketball teams.

Right…so since a school has a good football team they should be ranked higher right? UT, UF are better at sports and academically better than BC.

Who cares about rankings? If it were all about rankings than citizens of the UK would constantly be trying to pass themselves off as Americans. It may be a twisted analogy, but its true. If rankings were all that mattered…well, our world would be pretty depressing. Maybe Nietzche was right, and maybe I am depressed…hmmmm…I should ponder this.

I think Tulane is the most overrated school ever. Honorable OR Mentions: Harvard, WUSTL, Tufts, and Berkeley.

Underrated - Vandy and Brown<3

Ppl who are paying $50K/year care about the rankings. :-P

Overrated: NYU (big-time), Harvard for undergrad, Pomona sometimes
Underrated: Whitman College (you heard it from me first, this college is going to become very popular, very quickly! I’m predicting skyrocketing application numbers), Brandeis

Oh and I mean “rated” as in “how people perceive their academic reputation”, not in US News rankings.

Flying Pig: I couldn’t agree more with NYU being overrated by a lot. And I know Whitman! I’m actually from Washington and my genius AP Literature teacher went there, it is even relatively unknown in my state. But yes, judging from my Lit teacher, it is an incredible education

Haverford is an incredibly underrated LAC, in my opinion. I live two hours away from Haverford and noone at my school has even heard of it. Instead they choose to apply to Lehigh and Bucknell, which are great schools, but I think they’re missing out by not taking notice of Haverford or essentially all the tri-co schools for that matter. Lehigh and Bucknell are overrated in PA.

I think people need to remember that these are just personal opinions. People percieve prestige in different ways.

I think Northeastern University is underrated and Brownbear1 I don’t understand what your grudge against BC is its a top school.

Overrated: NYU, Harvard, Yale, UGA (for people in GA), University of Florida, Cornell, Princeton, USC, UCLA, UC- Berkeley, etc.

Underrated: Flagler College, Sarah Lawrence, Bennington College, Bard College at Simon’s Rock, Community College’s, SCAD, Emory, Vassar, Smith, Marquette, UW- Madison, etc.

A lot of teachers overrate the best state school in their state and act as if it’s Harvard such as UF and UGA. They want their students to apply to these school, because it is instate.

My two sense.

I’d attribute that more to location (UT and UF in the south, BC near Boston) than sports.

oh, and I disagree with early_college’s 2 cents. UGA and UF both have strong programs in many categories, and most of the college’s you listed are the best of the best. lmao at SCAD being underrated (though I will agree that Marquette is underrated)

It’d be interesting to know the logic behind thinking a school is “overrated.” It seems like in this thread the majority of schools listed are those that don’t have a strong reputation outside of certain regions, yet are still ranked highly in USNWR, etc.

flying_pig, I agree about NYU but how could you say Pomona is overrated? Most people haven’t even heard of Pomona. In fact I think it is underrated.

UGA is way over rated in GEORGIA and UF is way over rated in Florida. You could say their underrated for people outside of the state. This goes for any instate school. Teachers/Counselors rather you go to UGA than GA Tech or Emory. They convince you to go there, etc. GA Tech is very underrated and actually is better ranked than UGA. Harvard and Yale are overrated because people think they’re the only good schools. There are better schools than some of the Ivy’s.

Underrated: the University of Kansas, any school outside of the top 100
Overrated: Any school in the top 30
