Mount Holyoke College Early Decision 1 (Class of 2021) Applicants Thread!!!

@lapidescence oh that’s true…yeah, especially right before Christmas the days really drag by! We can do it!!! I’m hearing from another college on the 14th that I applied Early Action too, so I guess that helps a little bit

That’s what I’ve read online, about 55%. The normal acceptance rate is not much lower than that; last year it was around 52%. I used to think a 55% acceptance rate was relatively high for a school as good as MHC, but I think that this is may be a little “skewed” because MHC only accepts women. An admissions worker told me that they get a lot of top applicants, so that’s why their acceptance rate has increased over the years, and because of that, I think MHC is harder to get into than I originally thought. I don’t know if that makes any sense haha

@lapidescence @MHC2021 Yeah, it would be so cool if we ended up in college and the Outing Club together. I really hope you guys get in and get the aid you need!

aw thanks same to you! I’ll report back when the decisions are in! @greenteen17

@MHC2021 same :slight_smile:

@MHC2021 i get what you mean! i just hope my recs and essays help my admissions decision. i don’t think my EC’s are very impressive and i dont even have my O level results to show for it yet - the results only come out in january!

im too afraid to reread my college essay because i just know that if i do, i’m going to hate myself for it. does anyone else have the same problem?

@lapidescence I have that problem too! it’s the same for my writing supplement…

My SAT scores are pretty much at the middle 50% score range but my GPA is lower than MHC’s average GPA and I’m nervous that that’s going to ruin my chances. :frowning: My high school experience was a little rough but hopefully my counselor was able to explain what happened…

@lapidescence are O levels like the SAT? Because I didn’t send in my SAT scores and MHC told me that wouldn’t have any negative impact on my application. I’m most worried about my course rigor because by the end of high school I will have only taken 3 AP classes and this year my schedule is not very challenging…ahh!

I think I read my college essay once after I submitted my app…I don’t know why hahah. My supplemental essay is definitely the weaker of the two.

@archyr i don’t think it’ll kill your chances! i hear that mhc looks at applications very holistically, so everything plays a part - not just ur SAT scores and GPA. so ur ec’s, your recs, your common app essay and the supplement should pull up ur chances if they were lowered to begin with! no worries my friend

if it makes you feel better, my SAT 2’s were fairly bad. definitely not on par for a college like mhc! and i dont even have a gpa! we dont have that system for secondary school students in singapore, so im pretty much just wandering blind on that part haha

and i think as long as u manage to show mhc (whether through your essays, or ur additional info, or ur recs) that you didn’t let ur experiences pull u down, as in u did still try to improve and worked hard to do it even if u didnt get straight a’s or b’s, it’ll be alright. they must value ambitious, resilient people (from what i gather about moho)

@MHC2021 and nah, they aren’t like the SAT. they’re like these really important final exams that you have to take at the end of ur 4 years in secondary school - ur pretty much studying for those throughout your 4 years. they’re like. THE exams, ya know what i mean? and yeah MHC is SAT optional so its completely alright if you dont send in those scores.

if it makes you feel any better, i haven’t taken AP classes at all haha, and anyways, 3 classes is better than none right? do US students normally take a lot of AP classes?

also, has anyone noticed any change in the status of their documents (common app, teacher evals, transcripts etc) on the applicant status page? all of mine just have that green tick and ‘received’ next to them (for weeks now). is it supposed to stay like that?

@archyr I suggest you email them and ask them. I was also confused since my mid year report comes out after the decisions are released. I emailed them at admission@mtholyoke.edu and they responded within a day!

Did any of you apply for financial aid?
If you dont mind me asking…

@noor24 i did! sent in my profile and everything too. are you applying for FA?

and just out of curiosity, is your name noor? i saw your username and thought that would be a helluva coincidence because thats my name too!

@lapidescence Ohh okay I see. Those must be really long exams!
Yeah US students usually take a lot of APs (at least that’s how it is at my school). Most of my friends will have taken 5 to 10 APs by the end of high school! It’s crazy to me…last year I only had two and I know I wouldn’t have been able to handle any more at the same time because the workload was so heavy. Well, you’re right, at least I have a few and they’re in the subjects I’m interested in, so maybe that will help. What about in Singapore, is it common for students to take APs there?

@MHC2021 i see i see, that really does sound like a lot! i’ve read up about AP courses and they’re pretty advanced classes - i honestly doubt i could handle 1 or 2 much less 5-10 of them. its ok, u can join us lesser mortals with few to none AP’s. the cookies taste better since no one cried over college level calculus halfway through making them.

and nah, AP’s are a strictly american thing. if u were enrolled in a private international school here that followed the US curriculum, sure, but no its not common at all among the vast majority of singaporeans. although we do have something similar called the A levels! after you take O (ordinary) levels you’re meant to take A (advanced) levels, and finally, on to university!

but really, since A levels can actually count towards college credit in the US same as AP’s, you can bypass them completely and just apply to a us institution right after O levels. but it’s truly the road less travelled by!

won’t be long now - it’s already the 13th!!!

@noor24 I just sent out one! Thanks!

@lapidescence Yeah, I’m glad I am not taking more than one this year!! That’s interesting about the A levels; I never knew what those terms meant before.

Heh still the 12th in US, but it’s pretty soon!!!

@MHC2021 yeah ikr, i thought i’d never make it to the 12th/13th sane, but here i am haha

are you applying to any other colleges besides mhc? ik i applied EA to ohio-wesleyan, and i’m supposed to hear back from them on the 15th of dec, so that’s something to keep me grounded  what about you?

@lapidescence I applied early action to my state school, which I’m supposed to hear from tomorrow! Yeah, it will be nice to know about that school to keep me going until I hear from MHC. The only reason I really applied there is just because I wanted to hear early from one school (at that point I didn’t know I was applying ED to MHC) and the application fee was waived cause I’m in state, so I thought why not…
What drew you to apply EA to Ohio-Wesleyan?

Oh man, it’s the 13th now. I’m hoping that we have less than a week!!

@MHC2021 it was really mostly because owu has a pretty decent acceptance rate and it didn’t cost me a thing to apply (cough looking at u mount holyoke cough)

also, it has an astrophysics major which made me want to apply even more. all that with an admission notification by dec 15th - presto, there goes the application!

ahhhhh now it feels like time is moving really fast XD have the emails ever been sent out on a saturday? maybe we’ll hear around the end of the week
