Musical Theater Prescreens - Class of 2022 (process/response)

@MTmomSF As you know, my son had a somewhat similar experience where he got really good feedback from the program director and then didn’t pass the prescreen. But, he recently told me that he is glad he got such a stinging rejection early in the process because now it’s readied him for anything that comes ahead. He also said that he knows wherever he ends up (his current top choice or his safety school) he will go into that program and “own it” and take advantage of every opportunity. These kids are tough!

Has anyone else heard from Ithaca? I’m under the impression that it’s only two people who watch the videos and it’s taking forever. UGH!!! Will anyone on here be at Point Park on the 11th? Also, do you know if it’s okay for my son to wear tights instead of jazz pants?

@mommafaria My daughter has her Point Park audition on the 11th

We haven’t heard back from Ithaca yet…that seems odd that only two people are watching prescreens! Yikes! I am not familiar with how it usually works. I guess I kind of assumed it would be a groups of people. My D did get an invite from her top school, Penn State, to audition today!

Does anyone know if you will receive a rejection or acceptance for the pre-screens? Do the schools notify you either way? Of if you don’t hear anything you just assume you are not moving forward in the process? Has anyone received a rejection from Get Acceptd?

@hmichmom You should definitely expect a response - either a yes or no from any prescreen you submitted. I’ve never heard of a single program here that does not respond at all.

@hmichmom My D received email notifications from schools and an email via Acceptd/Acceptd message from others.

So you do receive a notification if you do not pass the prescreens? I know my daughter has auditioned for professional theatre opportunities and we never hear back from them if she isn’t cast. I wondered if you didn’t pass the prescreen you would not be notified. Thank you.

@jenniferm1973 is this the first audition for your D? Hopefully we can meet! Congrats on passing the Penn State pres-screen. Still waiting on UM (S’s first choice) and Ithaca.

I know Otterbein has released some results from prescreens. How long is the turn around taking and have people heard both positive and negatives from them?

Sorry–I’m not sure how they notify if you don’t pass. I’ve always assumed that no news is good news until you receive a rejection. Some of the schools posted how long it would take to hear back about prescreens, and all of them have been accurate for my D–it has been either rolling, or 2-3 weeks from what I’ve seen posted. Mine waited from 2 days to two weeks.

I’m under the impression that school either offer you an audition or say thank you but no thanks. I know someone who didn’t get an audition at CM.

Can anyone give me a list of “safer” schools with BA and BFA programs on the east coast for a boy that’s a singer-actor who can move?

@mommafria: without making any qualification of any kind with regard to these programs, here are some that you may want to take a look at:

American University DC
Catawba College NC
Catholic University DC
East Carolina University NC
Fairleigh Dickinson University NJ
Jacksonville University FL
Long Island University - Post NY
Molloy University/CAP21 NY
Plymouth State University NH
Seton Hill University PA
SUNY Buffalo NY
University of New Hampshire NH
University of Tampa FL
West Florida FL
Western Carolina University NC
Western Connecticut State University CT

A couple more come to mind that may fit your criteria but which may draw from a larger and more national audition pool (without any qualification intended nor implied to the programs listed above or below):

Marymount Manhattan
U Arts
Wagner

No judgement as to whether any of these schools are more or less “better” than any other MT program is neither expressed nor implied in this post.

I always get nervous with posts of this kind, lest someone take offense.

All schools (to my knowledge) will notify you either way if you have passed prescreens or not

@jenniferm1973 did your D choose her audition at Penn State or at Unifieds? We haven’t heard from them yet and that was why I was asking if you receive a not pass notification.

My D also received a prescreen “yes” from Penn State today-yay!

@hmichmom I don’t believe this was a school that she chose audition date on her application. I honestly can’t remember though because she applied so long ago. I know that it said on their website if you submitted before Oct 15, you would receive notice by the end of the month. The next round are not supposed to find out until mid-December

@owensfolks Congrats to your D! It’s a great school! Good luck :slight_smile:

Waiting for prescreen results is stressful and ultimately those first Nos hurt. But please remember, just like there sometimes seems no rhyme or reason to this entire process, the prescreen results can be a mystery. Last year my daughter did 8 prescreens and ended up with 5 yeses and 3 nos. She passed the prescreens for UMich, Ithaca, Shenendoah, Pace and Syracuse and did not pass for Penn State, Elon and Indiana. And it was all the same material edited to meet the different school requirements. So honestly, you just don’t know what each school is looking for in their class for any particular year. We were happy for the yeses when they came and tried to let the nos go quickly with a shrug and sigh. Honestly, and I don’t mean this to be a Debbie Downer, but it only gets worse when you get to March because there will be some bad news days when the tears are bound to flow. But just remember there will be good news days too. And I can honestly say in retrospect that those are the days you will store in your heart and remember!

@sopranomtmom thank you so much for your post. I’m not sure if you saw my previous question but you would be a great person to ask. When your D didn’t pass the prescreen did you get a notification? Or did you just not hear?
