To add on to what may have made me get declined: I also haven’t taken any foreign language classes and I didn’t submit any letters of recommendation (because I didn’t want to go on the goose chase trying to get people on CommonApp to fill them out for me, despite how they would’ve only helped me).
NC State probably looked at me and determined it was going to be really hard for me to transfer comfortably, complete everything I needed in a timely matter, and actually graduate without crashing. I honestly wish they spelled out why I got denied better in the letter they sent me…
It’s hard being declined because I finished my first semester of community college with a 3.1 cumulative GPA and after six semesters, I worked my way up to a 3.5 cumulative GPA with only two classes being C’s. Last semester in particular, I achieve a 4.0 semester GPA with two of the four classes being Calculus I and Computer Science C++ programming! I was also serving (and still am) as student government vice president.
@Gowolfpacks18 I also applied to William & Mary, which is five miles away from my house but if I didn’t get into NC State with all I had going for me then there is no chance in hell I’m getting in W&M. William & Mary is the second oldest school in the country next to Harvard and is considered a public ivy. They’re crazy selective.
Though I will admit, without an aid package of significant size to offset the out-of-state tuition: I wouldn’t have gone to NC State if I was admitted anyways solely because of the financial difficulties. I only applied because I wanted to continue the legacy my dad started, I wanted to see if I stood a chance at getting into W&M, and I wanted to see if I could get in at all. Don’t get me wrong though, I also want to go to NC State because I simply love the place too but I’m not too incredibly heartbroken … it’s just going to be hard for a little bit to root with the family for NC State during their televised games now…
Bruton, if you haven’t completed Physics 1 yet, then that is why. You have to have Calc 1&2 Chem 1 and Physics 1. Those classes are required to matriculate and as a transfer student you have to matriculate into your program. Try again after you finish those classes!
@Bruton if you are a CS major then you need to pick of JAVA 1 and both 1&2 if you can. Wake tech teaches it online if your school doesn’t offer it. Otherwise you will have pre-req issues.
Oh and my kid did get in as a Chemical Engineering Major. She plans to minor in Biotechnology or Bio-manufacturing. She was only top 30% in her high school class and a 3.3 UW and 4.0 W, but transferred in with 66 hours (81 by Fall) and a 4.0. She pretty much took every hard course offered at community college.
Log into MyPack Portal >main menu>student self service>campus finances>view financial aid
Click on the year then the documents tab. Everything in that table needs to have the status of complete. My oldest kid got her financial aid letter in late April two years ago. She received a retro scholarship her junior year and two scholarships her senior year plus some in grants that I was not expecting and of course loan offers. I have no idea how we got to a place where loans were considered aid, but well here we are.
Also look for outside scholarships. My youngest daughter got a $5000 from NASA/NC Space Grant for community college but basically she saved the money for State or at least most of it. Once you get your paragraphs written, there is not a whole lot of difference. If you spend a couple of hours filling out 10 scholarships and get one it is well worth it. We just came across the Space Grant Scholarship and it was HUGE. A little from family, a little from the State, a little from scholarships and a little from working and saving coupled with the first two years at community college living at home and loans are minimal.
@nealinnc I see. When I click through the financial aid section, I was selected for verification. Do I have to send out the proper documents before they give me an estimate of what my aid could be? Because that could take weeks to be updated…and 100% enrolling in a school with no idea what kind of aid I am receiving is nothing short of a risk. Lol
verification is a good thing. If you weren’t qualifying, then there would be no reason to verify. It won’t take long. You just fill it out and send it in, just make sure it matches what you already told them! My oldest got selected every time.
@nealinnc ah. I see. i corrected my FASFA a few weeks after I sent the original one, so I emailed them a second ago to make sure they had my corrected one…before I sent in that verification worksheet, etc. I don’t know why they wouldn’t have it tho.
Hey guys I’m a little late on this but I am a freshman looking to transfer as in-state, I applied early. I have a 3.95 with 65 hours of credit at the University of South Carolina Honors College. I applied as a Biology major. Still have not heard anything and still don’t have a decision date in my application portal. Reading this definitely has gotten me worried.
@lsp2015 what were your stats? I have a 3.95 at University of South Carolina Honors College and came in as a sophomore with credit hours from my AP Scores and applied to biology. I have not heard anything
Call the office that happened to my friend because she forgot to click something on the application so they said they would push her back to the second deadline
@fflmaster I can’t speak for everyone on this thread but I was under the impression that aid packages would be released in april. I was, however, selected for verification which leads me to think I will at least get some grants. Hopefully someone else has better info on this
