Northeastern University Early Action / Early Decision for Fall 2023 Admission

we are trying to find out if its possible to be reconsidered to NU during RD. emailed admissions but no response yet. NU London is just not an option for d.

It is possible that they might already have tentative admissions decisions made, just in case these applicants switch to ED2.

Agree that’s possible., and if so, why not release an accept or deny instead of defer?

I’m sure they need to manage how many they accept, so they do not end up overenrolling like they did in fall 2021. So the final decision might depend also on how many switch to ED2.

No
the offer you are provided is the offer you have. For those in London or Oakland, you can transfer after a year if your major is not offered at that camous or two years otherwise.

So they are again targeting another small class of a Boston admits (2600) and interesting to see thst they are looking for classes of 200-300 in Oakland and London. That equates to a full college of around 1200 once all 4 years fill in over time (like a smaller LAC.) plus room for NUin/NUbound students. I wish they mentioned those target numbers too.
Thanks for sharing.

Some info about this year’s applicants

I did not see it on here yet but NU emailed to clarify that EA is non-binding:

We’re writing to clarify a piece of information which was included in an email you received last night—Early Action admission to the Boston campus for fall 2023 enrollment is non-binding.

Only students admitted to the Boston campus at Early Decision will have a binding decision. The email correctly stated that you have until May 1, 2023 to submit your enrollment deposit.

We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

Sincerely,

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions

Northeastern University

Of course, they misspelled “Clarification” as “Carification” in the subject of the email.

Sorry to vent, but it’s a little disappointing that my son was accepted, but “oh yeah, you’ll need to go to another city first and then try and integrate to Boston in the spring
”

He felt so fortunate just to get in because of the insane competitiveness of NU now. He visited twice, lots of demonstrated interest, etc. 4.0 uw, 1560 SAT, 35 ACT, leadership, great EC’s. Applied EA.

Another classmate with absolutely mediocre, if not below average stats, got into the Boston campus for next fall. It’s all so confusing and weird. The classmate had zero demonstrated interest, never visited, doesn’t even know which “school/program” they applied to. B average, no advanced classes, no EC’s, and did not submit test scores. Applied EA.

It’s just all so confusing. I know it all works out in the end.

That does sound weird and confusing. The applicants that I have seen reporting Boston acceptance to this school seem to be much stronger students than what you describe.

Are you sure the classmate got in? We have noticed that sometimes a kid at school claims to get in somewhere, but then other kids figure out that it wasn’t true (because the decisions aren’t out for that school or something else is fishy about the story)

This EA round was pretty crazy, though. My son was admitted to NUin, like yours. No one else he knows at school received an offer, including some pretty impressive applicants.

I mean, enough people have asked this student if they read the letter, and if they’re sure it didn’t say Oakland or London that it’s got to feel a little insulting. But they claim it’s Boston.

(I work at the school my son attends, so I am privy to a lot of information).

What college is your son admitted to? Does he want to do NUin?

I have been a naysayer- and my kid was admitted to the Boston Campus.

This school has so many side games going on to try to somehow get it into a T20, it is maddening. It seems like data science is driving alot of their decision making towards this end.

My son has not absolutely crossed it off yet, but NUin is probably not a fit. He is doing an engineering degree. He has a lot of AP credits, so he probably wouldn’t be able to make much progress on his degree in the NUin semester (we looked very closely at the degree and gen ed requirements, he couldn’t even make much progress on gen eds). It seems like it would end up being a very expensive gap semester. He could choose to study abroad later on from any other school.

My DD was deferred but another student at her school who is practically failing a class and didn’t have a GPA to qualify for a team sport scholarship got into Oakland. Makes no sense.

The kids admitted to Boston may need aid from Northeastern. The Nu.in kids don’t get any financial aid. So if you have two kids, one with high stats, no need vs the other one with slightly lower stats with need, they may send the high-stats kid to NU.in. The way I understand it is that if your kiddo doesn’t have super high stats, not those kinds of tippy toppy kids, and still needs aid, not ton of aid though (Keep in mind that Northeastern is need aware), most likely to get admitted to Boston in EA cycle.

Same here with School of Engineering. He’s considering doing NUin but was honestly so disappointed by the other student getting Boston that it just left a bad taste in his mouth.

I work at a boarding school and I know how we market and sell programs, plus have another son at Middlebury (and they famously admit kids as “Febs” every year).

I think NU does do well with the things/programs they implement. But, I suspect there will be housing issues coming to Boston Spring of 2024, and it feels like a not-great way to start. We’ll see where else he gets in. He was really excited and hopeful for Northeastern.

They are not eligible for federal or state aid first semester, but they can receive Northeastern institutional aid that semester.

They may think the kid who got into Oakland may be more likely to accept that offer. Your deferred daughter probably has other and maybe better offers than that. Just my guess.

No swag for ED 1. My son got a colorful folder with a trifold rah-rah mini-poster to use as a little backdrop for social media pic. It was a bit disappointing but with the tales of all the EA snafus, not surprising.

I was browsing on the Boston College forum and came across this post:

“Did anyone receive an email from BC asking if they’d consider changing their application from RD to ED? My son received that email on January 3 and was given until January 6 to make the change if he chose to do so. He declined. Just wondering if anyone else received that email.”

Northeastern is not the only school nudging RD applicants to switch to ED 2!
