Northeastern University Early Action / Early Decision for Fall 2023 Admission

Case Western does the same. Apparently they put pressure on deferred EA applicants to switch to ED2, and sometimes students find out 2-3 weeks after they choose ED2 that they’d been accepted.

All about yield management.

Unfortunately, she doesn’t. One very safety school acceptance just came in last night. But that’s it so far. I hate this whole concept of “yield protection.”

I completely understand that. Kids are applying to SO MANY schools, I think this is the new normal. My son’s school recommends 8-10 applications. I hope your daughter gets an acceptance she can be excited about.

And that student may have chosen Oakland as an acceptable option for themselves on the common app.

Most certainly not. I would say that MOST competitive schools do so.

There are so many engineering students coming in with lots of APs. I suggest you seek out the parent FB pages for NUIN and ask folks. You will hear many many success stories for students of all majors starting with NUIN. I know too from my Ds that many of their engineering friends have a hard time going on a semester abroad later in their college terms bc of the rigor and sequencing of their curriculum, so getting a chance to go early is an option. Another friend with an engineering student now said her D is getting to do a summer dialogue travel class which is only 6 weeks bc a regular study abroad does not fit well between classes and coops. Something to consider.

Yes, we have been looking in depth at each school’s study abroad options for engineers. If he gets the basics of his major done in freshman year, then sophomore / junior year he could spend a semester or even year abroad at a foreign university where he could take specialized courses in his major. Some schools also have a specific program with foreign internships and technical language training, like UCONN Eurotech.

Northeastern is a great school and study abroad in the first semester works great for many folks, it just isn’t looking like a perfect fit for my son. Cost is an issue, too :grimacing:

Does anyone know where College of Engineering kids usually end up for NUin? We’ll know soon enough, but it’s actually quite difficult to find info online.

They have not released information for this year yet. We have been working from this list of courses from last year, just to estimate what may be offered. https://nuin.northeastern.edu/wp-content/uploads/2022-NUin-Course-Description-Guide_-3.30.22.pdf

The engineering options would be the locations that offer Calc for engineers and scientists (most have Calc I, II, and III), Physics I, Chemistry I. It seems that these are the core courses that engineering majors would be taking on NUin, unless they have AP credits to pass them out of these courses. Each major or school will have a set curriculum for each location, with required courses and electives.

So for example, here is the curriculum for fall 2022 in Greece for engineering majors: https://nuin.northeastern.edu/wp-content/uploads/FA22_-Greece_-COE_03.30.22-BEL.pdf

Where was this information found? From what I’ve seen, the offer of campus is final and transferring campus would be treated like a regular transfer from another college, so there is no added benefit from being in London when requesting to transferring to Boston

From upthread:

Is this also offered at the London Campus? Since they are similar cases I’d guess so but I do not want to assume

I don’t know. My son was offered NUin so I really don’t know all the details on London or Oakland admission.

(Or even all the details on NUin, but trying to gather as much as I can  )

I will say however that I certainly HOPE that both London and Oakland students can transfer after a year without much trouble, if their major is not even offered at the campus where they were admitted!

It was sent to my son as an admitted student; he did apply early action; I am sure you could admissions and ask about and status of application as well.

Id sure hope so too, that would probably be one of the only ways I’d accept the offer of going to London without my major. With everything being so new I think more information will be released and explained soon

I just got off with admissions and London is a 3 year program with option of transferring for a 4th year. If accepted to Oakland can transfer after 2 years; they said would not send you to a campus that did not have your major;

So London does not have the option to transfer after 2 years like that Oakland screenshot?

What if a student changes their mind about what major they want?

Northeastern London operates in the English system. A English bachelor’s degree takes 3 years. A 4th year in Boston would lead to a second bachelor’s (A US bachelor’s) degree

I am really curious how that curriculum works. Do they strip out the NU Path (gen ed / breadth requirements)?

I think it’s 2 years!
