Northeastern University Early Action / Early Decision for Fall 2023 Admission

I don’t think so but that is a good question re: changing majors;

Here is Northeastern’s response regarding using Cal Grant for Oakland’s campus:

As of July 1, 2022, Mills College was acquired by Northeastern University and continues to operate as Mills College at Northeastern University. Currently, Northeastern University is not Cal Grant eligible but the Commission expects that the additional location at Mills College will become eligible again later in the 2022-23 academic year. This is language is directly from the California Student Aid Commission website.

It is good news for some California students who were admitted to the Oakland campus like my daughter.

Sounds like it is best for you to speak directly with Admissions to better understand all the implications with accepting a London offer. It is a new program so best to get your questions answered by NU directly.

you’re amazing, tamagotchi! Can you find a similar PDF for COE in London? I thought I was good at Googling, but i come up with nothing.

No I didn’t find one for COE in London (not sure they offered that last year?) but here is one for Khoury College (CS / Data science majors): https://nuin.northeastern.edu/wp-content/uploads/FA22_-England_-Khoury_-5.20.22-BEL.pdf

I expect there will be changes for London this year though, since they now offer a whole degree there. They may have more options or it’s even possible London might not be a NUin option any more (if it will be full of London campus students). They haven’t released the NUin locations yet.

We’re in the same spot - trying to learn as much as we can about NUin - we spent last night going thru internet archives of NUin - yes, it’s all last year (aug 2022) but it helps to see what was offer and other details at each of these locations

Knowing how tight housing is already for so many colleges that overenrolled since 2020, I’m particularly worried about Spring 2024 reentry to Boston:

50% of students end up in hotel-style housing? Yikes:

The adjustment to Boston is varied, as the article shows. As for students being placed around campus being an issue, one year, when the new East Village dorm opened in January, all NU In students were housed there. And there were complaints that some felt physically isolated from the rest of the students. So, there is no ideal placement that will please everyone.

My D came back from Dublin and is now living in new student housing that was formerly the south tower of Sheraton Boston. People still call it the Sheraton but it is separate from the regular hotel and has its own NU security. They are finishing a new gym and common spaces in the building also. Every floor has an RA and the entire building is NU students. The rooms have been outfitted with TwinXL lofted beds, dressers, 2 desks, and closets for each student. There is plenty of floor space since the rooms used to have bigger hotel beds. They are fabulous accommodations and my daughter and her 3 roommates feel they won the lottery after coming back from apartment style student housing in Dublin. They have a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom suite with amazing views of Boston. “Hotel style accommodations” for returning NUin students are not a downgrade from traditional student housing.

In 2021, the choices for College of Engineering was Ireland and Greece, but that was during Covid and there was a limited number of locations then. It seems NUIn website is not active at the moment. You should be able to write/call to get a response.

I had read that one tower of the Sheraton Boston would be student housing permanently. That hotel was closed for 18 months during the pandemic until Northeastern made the owners an offer they couldn’t refuse. It is not a long walk to campus and adjacent to the Christian Science Center, which is mostly occupied by Northeastern anyway.

Now that the city’s main convention center is at the Seaport instead of the Pru, the hotel, the largest in Boston, has been struggling, even before the pandemic.

Moving students in and out of housing between semesters seems like it should be one of Northeastern’s strengths, given the co-op program. They should have some kind of flexible system for that, right?

My oldest D was a NUin last year and spent the spring in the Sheraton near campus. (bookings were down so it was surplus for the hotels). The Sheraton was sold last spring and I believe it’s waiting to be renovated, probably why NU is back to using one wing of the hotel. It was by far the biggest room she’ll ever had. I understand the luxury of have a single king size room isn’t happening again. Her class was the largest class by far and caused this years class to be smaller than past years. Boston officials track the admission levels off all the college so there won’t be a housing shortage. Hence this years class is smaller than normal. NU has students coming and going all year round. I wouldn’t expect a tight housing for next year.

The move was incredibly well organized and the orientation made the NUin students feel like part of the Boston campus very quickly. My daughter keeps texting me about all the clubs she has joined. If people want a traditional college experience, NU isn’t for them, even if they are first admitted to the Boston campus. Those that want the full breadth of experiential learning understand that moving in and out of locations is part of the global and co-op programs. The campus kind of “re-sets” every semester with students moving in and out. Some parents express worry that their kids won’t be able to find friend groups if they aren’t in Boston from the very beginning, but that just isn’t the way NU operates.

Edited to include a post from NU’s Instagram. This student is a great example of someone who clearly moved in and out of the Boston campus - and she didn’t even begin with NUin!

I wonder if this is part of it? Some programs are highly competitive and others less so?

If NU is your son’s first choice, then I would consider doing the first 4 months abroad if it works with your finances. My daughter and one of her Dublin roommates were very excited to be accepted to NUin, and the other roommates shared that they were upset. One of them lives in MA so decided she could compromise on the first 4 months abroad because NU was her first choice. NU was not the other girl’s first choice but she took the offer because she got a great merit scholarship. They are now solidly adapted in Boston after a month back there but all 4 frequently talk about how much they miss Dublin.

I was looking at the NUin site using the wayback machine (has a lot of details regarding the sites from last year that you can’t access right now), it seems that the past two years the site has been updated with the new info and locations on January 26th. Im not entirely sure how the wayback machine works or how often it captures the sites, so this could be totally wrong.
Here’s the site if anyone wants to access the old info:
