That’s cool, jwy, I’d hope to see you at either school. The reason why I am rather wary about NU is their extreme focus on high school GPA. Although my junior and senior years showed improvement, I did receive poor grades during the first half of HS, due to transitioning problems and a lack of maturity at the time (which I have discussed in my essays). Although my college GPA is much better, I also don’t have that many extracurriculars under my belt. I’m still hoping for the best and preparing for the worst, though. I’ll just be glad to transfer out of my current school; it’s been a downright miserable experience at Lawrence University.

Congrats on Mac. As a Mac student applying to N.U., I was wondering why you guys applied to both. Mac and N.U. seem like very, very different schools, no?

My primary interest is in small LACs in the midwest (like Macalester), but I ended up applying to Northwestern as well since it’s on my doorstep and my parents went there. I’m a bit annoyed that they don’t send out decisions until so late because I have to submit deposits to most other schools by June 1st. If I don’t hear back in the first round of responses I think I’ll look elsewhere; it’s not so much that I don’t think I’m a competitive applicant, I just don’t think it would be the best ‘fit.’

Incidentally VLN, what didn’t you like about Lawrence? I applied there this cycle.

That’s my main gripe with NU’s transfer decision as well. Mac wants me to send a deposit by May 28, but NU’s decision will probably come later. I called their admissions office, however, and they said that they’d try to hurry with mine. We’ll see, though.

As for Lawrence - I didn’t like the environment. It’s not very academically rigorous, and I’m not surrounded by students who want to invest much effort into their work; rather, the frat/party scene is huge and rather alienating. I also want a slightly larger school with a better campus and surroundings. Since I live near Evanston, I know the area around NU well. Also, Mac’s urban environment is supposed to be very active (unlike Appleton).

Does anyone know if Northwestern is need-blind for transfers, or only for first-years?

Wow… you guys should hate on colleges elsewhere… my dad went to Lawrence, thanks

Hey, someone asked me a question, and I gave him an answer. Many people like the school, and that’s fine. I don’t.

monacle- contrary to popular belief, your daddy is not the final arbiter of truth in the Universe.

Different people can have very different experiences at the same college, a fact that should be well understood by all of us (given that we are applying to transfer).

Mediator - your comment made me laugh out loud.

We are pleased to inform you your transfer application to the Weinberg College of Arts And Sciences at Northwestern University is now complete. Transfer admission decisions are made on a rolling basis after the application deadline has passed.

Should you need to make any changes to your mailing address, or your intended school and major, all requested changes must be made in writing to the Office of Undergraduate Admission.

The mailing and e-mail address you provided in your application will be used for all correspondence. The e-mail address we have on record for you is:

It is important that you continue to use this account throughout the application process as essential information will be sent to you electronically at this address.
Thank you for your interest in Northwestern University. We look forward to reviewing your application.

Is this the email that you guys got? Where does it say that we need to send in our final transcript?

It doesn’t say it in the email, but if you call their office it says something like, “If you haven’t already, please make arrangements to have your final transcripts sent…” Has anyone who sent their spring grades in heard anything back yet?

Ladies and gentlemen, please ingrain this to your minds:

-If you are applying as a freshman and therefore applying to enter as a sophomore, you HAVE TO send your final grades irrespective of when you receive them. Northwestern must evaluate a minimum of one year of college performance.
-If you are applying as a sophomore and therefore applying to enter as a junior, you DO NOT HAVE TO send in your final grades. However, you are STRONGLY recommended to send them in as numerous decisions are held until final grades are made available to the admissions committee.

Good luck!

i am still dying of anticipation. haha

Is anyone familiar with NU’s financial aid? Vandy is giving me a very generous financial aid package (I’m talking VERY generous) so I’m wondering if NU will even come close to what I’m getting from Vandy.

when you call their transfer admissions office the voicemail says that you should send your final grades as soon as possible, but this doesnt sound mandatory? what if you didnt do too good this semester…wouldnt that hurt your chances?

I think you have to send them, especially if you’re a rising sophomore.

we probably have another month 'til the mail is out!

so we are supposed to send final transcripts? I know that they WANT us to but what if our gpa dropped a little this semester…

the reason i keep asking is because we all received e-mails that our applications were complete and since the website says nothing about sending final transcripts no one would know to do so unless they happened to call the office and get that message. So, when they emailed us telling us that our apps were completed, all we had left was to wait on a decision… right, doesnt that make sense?

All prior evidence (granted it’s mostly anecdotal evidence from prior applicants) indicates that the admission committee will not make admit a rising sophomore without reviewing an entire year’s worth of grades. Furthermore, Ace6904 posted this on May 4:

Ok, to settle this whole issue once and for all, here is part of an email I received a while ago when I asked which materials I needed to send in.

“We will not be able to review your application until we see at least one full-time year’s worth of college studies. We understand that most schools are not done with their spring term by our May 1 deadline. We can wait for your final transcript as long as you send us your most up to date transcript before the deadline.”

I am currently finishing up my freshman year, so my application will not be reviewed until I send in final grades from this year.
