Northwestern HPME Part 1

jollyrancher99,

thanks a million for your input. i shall work harder to boost those SAT II scores...

jollyrancher99,

I don't think HPME accepts SAT II Math IC. The HPME website specifically states it requires the math level 2 test.

"Applicants are required to take the College Entrance Examination Board SAT and SAT subject exams in math level 2 and chemistry. The American College Test with writing (ACT) may be substituted for the SAT."

Taj - there are a few international HPME students. I met one (who got in) on the day of my interviews. NU is offering financial aid for the first time this year for internationals, which means they want to attract more. Only thing, you have to actually visit the univeristy for your interviews. Also, you HAVE to apply Regular Decision to Northwestern, so you can apply ED elsewhere, but if you get into that school, and want to go hpme (u find out in april), you better find a gooood reason to resind the ED offer.

Lunknot- Thanks for the info. Regarding the interview, I believe that NU conducts interview via telephone for internationals if its too much of a hassle for them to visit the campus.

Thought I would point that out as there seems to be some confusion. This is in line with the implicit assumption that you should have completed pre-calculus and ideally are taking calculus by the time you apply. Otherwise, the only way you can fulfill the requirement of having differential and integral calculus before beginning the HPME is to cram them through summer school somewhere before NU starts.

Actually someone here can probably verify that you do indeed need to have differential and integral calculus before you start at NU as I am not 100% sure about that.

Hi,
Right now I am a junior in a small town in South Texas. my gpa is a 5.6 out of 5.0 and rank first in the class. My real question is what certain aspects should i try to focus on in my jnr year that will help me get into any bs/md program. any help at all would be wonderful

One of the main things BS/MD programs look for (in addition to high GPA/SAT/SATIIs) is medically related ECs. This can be volunteering at a hospital, or a seniors' home, or doing medical research, etc.

for the application request card, should you put the year that you took the highest course level? for example, if I took english for 4 years but am taking ap english courses 11th and 12th grade, should I put that?

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but what does HPME stand for?

Honors Program in Medical Education: http://www.cas.northwestern.edu/advising/hpme.html

After we send our HPME app request cards in, will we be notified even if we don't get sent the app?

hey guys, i have a simple question.

I'm in my junior year, and will most likely recieve a 34-35 on the ACT and 2250+ on the new SAT, very likely 2300+. My sat II chemistry is a 760 and i got a 5 on the ap test. I also have gotten a 5 on the APUSH exam.

I will end up with a GPA of 4.6 and rank most likely about 15, since my school is extremely impressive (district 203).

The only problem is, I got a B in ap chem both semesters, one B in physics 2nd semester, and I might get a B in ap calculus BC first semester. Aside from these 4 B's because of outside reasons, I will get an A in all my other classes.

in the end, my ap classes will be: chem, bio, gov, euro, us hist, micro/macro, english, calculus, computer science, and maybe latin.

I will for sure get 5 on most, with maybe 1-2 4's in there.

What are my chances for HPME, considering my very high SAT and ACT scores, but my B's in the extremely important AP Chemistry?

thx for any help guys, much appreciated

Do you go to Naperville North or Naperville Central? ;-) I'm from Waubonsie...made it into HPME last year...

I think you've got a good chance. Just work on not being too self-confident about getting high test scores, or "for sure" 5s, or being in an "extremely impressive" district - humility is a great trait to have as a doctor. And remember test scores and grades aren't everything!

good luck

I'm really sorry if I came off as arrogant or too self-assured, but I just wanted to get as much info as possible.

I'm just really scared that those two B's in AP Chemistry will hurt me so much that I dont get in. I mean, on the HPME website, it specifically says they look for students who excel in CHEMISTRY, MATH, and english, and this includes two of the things in which I have gotten B's in!

I'm going to soon do a mini-med program and have also voluteered about 80 hours in a veteran's hospital. Im also hoping to find a medical research, but this might not be possible.

you really think I have a chance? do you know anyone that got in with two B's in ap chem and a B in ap calc? I know these are really specific questions but i'm just so nervous!

HPME is probably at the very top of my list, and next comes GPPA, which hopefully I will have a better chance in.

heh i got the supplemental..........................damn now im hoping for the interview. where else is everyone applying? im applying to like 5 straight progs.

When did you send in the request card?

np11788,

how can u get the supplemental when u've got to apply RD for HPME?

RScubb, I think you have a good chance. Good luck!

i sent in the card for the HPME. both Undergrad and supp are due on jan 1st
